America's Top Pop Culture Obsessions

Teen star Miley Cyrus, pop diva Madonna, "The Dark Knight," hi-tech gadgets and Barack Obama were among America's top pop culture obsessions that turned into possessions in 2008, according to online market place eBay.

"When someone or something excites the American public, you immediately see a surge of related listings pop up on eBay," said Karen Bard, eBay's pop culture expert.

Cyrus, the 16-year-old star of Disney's "Hannah Montana" TV show, beat teen rivals like the Jonas Brothers and the cast of "High School Musical" hands down in terms of items sold on eBay, the Web site said in a survey of hot items in 2008.

Some 223,139 "Hannah Montana" related-items, ranging from buttons, to clothes and posters, exchanged hands on the Web site during the year.

Britney Spears, emerging from another year of personal woes, proved popular with eBay buyers with 32,966 items sold.

But Spears was overshadowed by "Material Girl" Madonna, who turned 50 this year and also divorced second husband Guy Ritchie after months of rumors. Madonna memorabilia, albums and posters saw sales of 96,511 items.

In a historic presidential election year, Barack Obama was the clear front-runner on eBay as well as with U.S. voters, winning the November election and to become the first U.S. black president. The Web site saw an active trade in Obama posters, coins, action figures and even the odd lunchbox that led to sales of 111,546 Obama-related items.

Months of Obama-fever outstripped sales of Sarah Palin items (20,712) after the Alaska governor was named Republican vice-presidential candidate in September, sparking a rush in buyers for look-alike wigs, Palin's trademark glasses, autographed photos and even thong underwear.

Fans went batty for "The Dark Knight," the latest Batman movie, with 60,484 related items sold -- 18 times more than those of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

Olympic gold medal swimming champion Michael Phelps broke records in the pool and sparked a buying fever online that saw 13,350 Phelps-related items sold on eBay, the world's largest online marketplace.

But the hottest of all the pop culture trends was the Nintendo Wii, which saw a whopping 2.05 million related items including accessories and games sold on eBay, outstripping the Microsoft Xbox 360 (1.29 million items), Apple's new iPod Touch (281,361) and the iPhone 3G (212,837).

The data was based on eBay listings that included key words in the listing title across all categories from Jan 1-Oct 15, 2008.

Anatomy of a Web Address

URL (Universal Resource Locator, pronounced "you are ell")

http - transfer protocol (type of information being transferred)
www.googleguide.com - website name, host name
googleguide - second-level domain name
com - top-level domain name
searchEngines - directory name (major category)
google - sub-directory name (sub-category)
searchLeader - file name (a file within the directory)
html - file format

Here's a list of some common top-level domain names.

.edu - educational site (usually a university or college)
.com - commercial business site
.gov - U.S. government/non-military site
.mil - U.S. military sites or agencies
.net - networks, Internet service providers, organizations
.org - non-profit organizations and others

Because the Internet was created in the United States, "US" was not originally assigned to U.S. domain names; however, it's used to designate American state and local government hosts, including many public schools, and commercial entities, e.g., well.sf.ca.us. The domain .ca represents Canada, unless it's followed by .us, in which case it represents California.

Domain Codes State
.ca.us California
.nv.us Nevada
.tx.us Texas

Other countries have their own two letter codes as the top level of their domain names - although many non-US sites use other top-level domains (such as .com):

Domain Codes Country
.ca Canada
.de Germany
.dk Denmark
.jp Japan
.il Israel
.uk United Kingdom
.za South Africa

To limit results to a single site or domain, specify the site name (e.g., www.googleguide.com or googleguide.com) or a top-level domain name (e.g., .com or .edu) in Google's domain selector.

Home Remedy For Skin Care

Healthy Skin Tips That Everyone Can Benefit From

There is more to having beautiful skin than just washing your face twice a day, a lot more, especially for those who are prone to skin problems in the first place. One thing often overlooked when planning a skin care regimen is eating a healthy diet. No matter how much you clean your face, how many times a week you exfoliate, or how many products that you use, you still won't have the healthy skin that you are looking for if you are not supplying your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs to function normally. If you don't have time to always eat as you should, you should consider taking some vitamin supplements everyday, to at least make certain you aren't depriving your body and your skin of what it needs.

When thinking of skin care, you should take a few moments to figure out what type of skin you have, so that you know what type of products you should use. Some people have normal skin, some people have oily skin, some people have dry skin, some have sensitive skin, and some have combination skin, which is one of the hardest skin types to deal with. You may even have skin disorders that require you to treat your skin differently, such as psoriasis, eczema, or even damage that has been caused by the sun. You have to take all of this information to account when shopping for products and developing your daily skin care routine.

For healthy skin, once you have learned to eat a healthy diet, or use supplements, and have determined what skin type you have, you should learn the three main steps that should be in every skin care routine: cleansing, exfoliation, and moisturizing. More reading on Home Remedy for Skin Care

Bottled waters

There are two types of bottled water: spring water and mineral water. Spring water is collected directly from the spring where it arises from the ground and must be bottled at the source. UK sources of spring water must meet certain hygiene standards, but may be treated in order that they meet limits set on pollution.

Mineral water emerges from under the ground, then flows over rocks before it's collected, resulting in a higher content of various minerals. Unlike spring water, it can't be treated except to remove grit and dirt. Different brands of spring and mineral waters will have differing amounts of minerals depending on their source.

In 1999 Government regulations came into force covering the labelling requirements of bottled waters, to help consumers make informed choices about the products they buy. As a result, the levels of all minerals in natural mineral water must be listed on the label.

But is it necessary to buy bottled water? The drinking water available from our taps is perfectly adequate to replenish our fluid loss, and undergoes many processes to bring it up to the standards set out in the Water Supply Regulations. In 1999, according to Which? Online, 98.8 per cent of tap water sampled passed drinking water inspectorate tests.

There are certainly no proven health benefits of bottled water over tap water - it basically comes down to personal taste and cost.

Earning a Degree in Financial Stability

by Laura Rowley

The job outlook appears to be brighter this year for new college graduates, at least according to one survey: Employers plan to hire nearly 20 percent more new college graduates in 2006-'07 than they did in 2005-'06, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Here are a few thoughts on money and happiness for new graduates, who are set to begin collecting their first real paychecks and dive into their working lives:

1. Write down what you value most and how you can achieve it.
*Be specific about your financial goals, but don't let money serve as the only yardstick for success.

2. When you list your life goals, don't put money at the top.
*Researchers have found that people who make the pursuit of money a top goal score lower for mental health.

3. Start saving from day one.
*Get in the habit of saving at least 10 percent of your salary every year for retirement right out of the starting gate. Otherwise you may never do it

4. Recognize the downside of letting your lifestyle keep up with your income.
*The phrase "hedonic treadmill" was coined by psychologists in the late 1960s. It describes how we adapt to improvements in our circumstances, and then seek more. The more money we make, the more we demand from life, and the more dissatisfied we become when we don't get what we want.

5. Procrastinate, procrastinate, procrastinate.
*Put off until tomorrow what you could spend today, and the savings will be eye-popping over time.

6. Never buy a new car.
*Transportation devours one-fifth of average household spending.

7. Choose your friends wisely.
*According to a study by credit counseling group Myvesta, men overspend to impress other people, while women get in financial trouble because they want to socialize with a particular peer group. Either behavior can get you in a heap of trouble if you identify with a group that has deeper pockets than you.

8. Define "enough."
*Think seriously about what you want to earn, but more important, about what "enough" looks like. How do you ultimately want to spend your time? Where and how do you want to live? What people do you want in your life?

Bags Yesterday and Today

Do you know anything about bags? Of course commonly it is widely use or a necessity among us especially if we have something valuable or precious things to carry.

It was said that on 14th century, on an egyptian hieroglyphs it shows that pouches are carried around the waist. Bags are attached to a 'girdles' which were fastened to the waist. It also shows the status of a person, the richer the person the more elaborate the bag is.

Bag is a container that is usually used for storing or holding something. You can put your cellphones, wallets, books and other stuffs. And what are your bags made of? well, bags are generally made of different materials like paper, plastic to cloth. Bags came fom different sizes from smaller ones called purses to bigger ones called suitcases. Bags vary form different occasions too. If you are on a party you can bring purse with you, on a school a backpack, on the office a leather or a handbag can be. If your on traveling, biking or hiking you can have travel bags or backpack where you can put lots of things on it.

Bags are a lot useful, everyone carries it and make fashion out of it. And today there are mutliple designer bags seen on the internet and market places to choose from.

Braille

Revolutionized Written Communication for the Blind

The braille system is a devised used by blind person to read and write started in 1821 by Frenchman Louis Braille.

Each braille character or "cell" is made up of six dot positions, arranged in a rectangle containing two columns of three dots each. A dot may be raised at any of the six positions to form sixty-four combinations.

The braille system was based on a method of communication originally developed by Charles Barbier in response to Napoleon's demand for a code that soldiers could use to communicate silently and without light at night called night writing. But it was rejected because it was to complex to learn. 1821 he visited the National Institute for the Blind in Paris, France, where he met Louis Braille. Braille identified the major failing of the code, which was that the human finger could not encompass the whole symbol without moving, and so could not move rapidly from one symbol to another. His modification was to use a 6 dot cell. This now started the braille system, which is the revolutionized written communication for the blind.
