Keeping I.T. Simple

Pretty much anyone you talk to will tell you that the simplest things are almost always the best way to go. Even scientists use Occam's Razor using the phrase: "All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one."

This policy holds true for my computer business. I don't like to mess about wit technical jargon if I can help it. I guess that comes from my previous jobs in the retail and hospitality industry. I have also never been one for beating around the bush, as it were.

When talking to customers or friends, I try to keep my explainations as simple as possible so anyone can understand them - including me. :)

Procedure for Removing Windows Messenger

Windows Messenger is the very old, very hackable, version of Microsoft's instant messaging client.
It is much better to use MSN Messenger or Windows LIVE Messenger, Microsoft's latest version of their instant messaging client. For more advanced users, patches can be found to remove the ads and other rubbish from all Messenger clients at A-Patch or Mess.be

PLEASE NOTE
If "Messenger Service" windows are popping up, you have spyware on your machine and this must be removed immediately!
Install and run Ad Aware SE and Spybot to remove spyware from your PC.
!!THEY ARE BOTH FREE!!

The following procedure details how to remove Windows Messenger from your computer.
1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
2. Click on Add or Remove Programs
3. Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
4. Once the new window pops up, scroll to the bottom of the list
5. Remove the tick from Windows Messenger.
It is advisable to also remove MSN Explorer and Outlook Express, if you're not using them. This will increase your computer's security.
6. Click Next
7. Once it's completed, hit Finish

That's it, you're done.

Please make sure you have your anti-virus software, spybot and ad aware up to date and run them regularly to help protect your system.
Make sure you have a firewall that is working properly, even if you're on dial-up .

Stay safe.

Procedure for using DVD Shrink

This guide shows you how to copy DVD movies

1. Insert the DVD movie you want to copy in the top drive.
Insert a blank DVD into the bottom drive.

2. Open DVD Shrink. Look for the icon below on your desktop.
It is also located in the Burn & Rip Menu on the toolbar.

OR

3. Hit the Open Disc button in the top left.

4. Click yes if the film is listed in the dialogue box

5. DVD Shrink will then scan the disc for content, showing you a preview of its progress.

6. Once finished, the main area should look something like this.

Unfortunately, I have found that DVD Shrink has problems adding all the DVD menus, trailers and extra stuff. To ensure you get the whole film in the best quality available, it is advisable to only copy the film itself.

7. So, hit Re-author

8. Select the Main Movie and drag it into the box on the left. It will be the biggest file listed, usually 4,500MB or more.

9. Hit the Backup button.

10. This box should appear and you should be able to press OK without any problems.

DVD Shrink should do the rest for you. It will even burn the movie to DVD for you. Once finished, play the movie to check its OK and then delete the files from the hard drive as listed above.
