Improving Your Tennis Game

Tennis can be an enjoyable sport, and a great way to get exercise. Or it can be a chore. It's up to you whether you will enjoy it or not. If you want to succeed at tennis, and to get the most enjoyment out of it, you'll need to approach it with the proper mindset.

Like anything else in life, if you have a negative mindset, you won't do well. If you really want to learn tennis, you have to approach it with a positive mindset. You'll need to approach the game with an open mind, and self confidence. If you have confidence you will do much better than if you go in thinking that you can't do it.

You'll also need to accept the fact that you will make mistakes. Even professional tennis players make mistakes. If they didn't, then no one would ever win a game... the ball would just be hit continuously back and forth over the net. You will make mistakes. Don't beat yourself up over them. Learn from your mistakes, and use them as an opportunity to improve your game.

Even if you love to play tennis, you'll want to take a break from it now and then. If all you ever do is play tennis, then you will get burned out, and not enjoy it as much. Spend some time shopping, or hanging out with your friends, or just sitting at home watching TV. After spending a bit of time away from the court, you'll be able to return with a new enthusiasm, ready to play again.

Improving Your Tennis Serve

One of the basic techniques in tennis is the serve. If you want to play a good game of tennis, you'll need to improve your serve.

An important tip to improve your tennis serve, is to relax your arm and wrist. When you serve, you'll want as much power behind the serve as possible. If your arm and wrist are tense, then you'll lose some of the power. 20% of the power of the serve comes from your wrist. 15% of that power is lost if your wrist is tense. So, you'll want to concentrate on keeping your arm and wrist relaxed, and not tense.

You will also want to make sure that the movement of your arm is smooth and fluid. Jerky movements can cause you to lose some of the power in your serve. Practice the movement until it is nice and smooth.

Another way to improve the power of your serve, is jumping. If you want to maxmize your serve, then you'll need to jump as you serve. Be sure that you're wearing a good, sturdy pair of shoes, with enough cushion to protect your foot when you land.

When you serve, ensure that you're lining your body up with the service box that you're aiming for. If you're turning your body, in some other direction, then you're just not going to be able to hit the service box.

All of these techniques will take some practice. Once they become second nature, though, they will improve the quality of your serve.

Aside from tennis balls, the most essential piece of tennis equipment is a good tennis racquet.

Keeping Your Eye On The Tennis Ball

You can't hit the tennis ball if you don't know where it is. A critical skill in tennis is being able to keep your eye on the ball. It seems impossible to keep track of a little yellow tennis ball, spinning through the air at high speeds. If you want to succeed at tennis, though, you'll need to be able to keep track of the ball. If you can keep track of the ball, you'll be able to be in the right place at the right time to hit the ball.

Stay focused on the ball. Don't be looking into the stands to find your family, and don't worry so much about watching your opponent. The crowd can be distracting, but you will need to tune them out. They're at the game to watch you, you're not there to watch them. So, keep your focus on the game and the ball, and not on the crowd.

Keeping your eye on the ball is a skill that is best developed with practice. The best way, is to simply get out onto the court and to do it. Have someone hit some balls to you, or get a tennis machine to throw some balls at you. If you just can't get onto the court, then playing certain video games may help. The Nintendo DS offers eye coordination games that may help. Other video game systems, such as the Nintendo Wii may also have games that can help you.

Training your eyes to focus on a fast moving tennis ball is one of the most effective ways to improve your game. It just takes some time and some practice.

Two Things You Need To Learn

There are two major things that you'll need to know if you want to succeed at tennis. Once you've mastered these two things, you'll have a much easier time trying to play tennis.

The first thing, is that you need to be ready to hit the ball. Don't turn and wave to your friends while you're waiting for the ball, focus on the game. Focus on the ball, and where it is going, and then be ready to hit it with your raquet when the time comes.

The second thing is follow through. Practice your follow through until it becomes second nature. Practice, and be sure that you are rotating your shoulder properly. This will help to improve your follow through, and it will reduce the risk of injury. This will also help you put the power into your follow through to ensure that you put the ball just where you want it on the tennis court. Keeping a good stance will also help in a proper follow through.

Mind Control For A Tennis Match

Mind control is important in playing your best. I'm not talking about voodoo or some kind of telepathy to throw off your opponent's game. I'm talking about things you can do to ensure that you are mentally prepared for your tennis game.

You'll want to make sure that you get plenty of sleep before a tennis match. You may be tempted to stay up late to practice, but that may cause problems come game time. Ensuring that you get a good night's sleep before a game will help you to be mentally sharp for a match.

You'll also want to be sure that you aren't taking any medication which will make you groggy, or affect your mental edge. Yes, sometimes you do need to take medications for allergies or for other health issues. If you can wait until after the tennis match to take the medication, then do so. If you can't wait, then maybe you can try talking to your doctor, and getting a prescription for medications which will not make you drowsy.

Be confident in your game, and project that confidence to your opponent. When you have a chance, look your opponent in the eye with confidence. It may have no effect on them whatsoever. On the other hand, it may help to shake their confidence, and give you that little extra edge that may mean the difference between winning and losing the match. Even if it doesn't have an effect on your opponent, a confident feeling will go a long way towards improving your performance in the game.

Some More Tips On Improving Your Tennis Game

With the limited space available, I can only give you so much information. These books will give you a lot more information on practicing and improving your tennis game.

Summary

Tennis is just like any other sport. If you put your mind to it, and put in the proper training, and if you have the proper attitude, you can succeed. Whether you're playing in a tennis match, or just practicing, you'll want to maintain a positive attitude, and be confident that you will succeed. Venus and Serena Williams didn't become expert tennis players overnight. They started out just like you, having little skill in the game. They put in the time practicing, and honing their tennis skills to become the players that they are today. If you put in enough practice, who knows? You may win Wimbledon someday.
