Choosing Your Flowers
The optimum time to begin picking the flowers that will become your bouquet is after you have chosen your dress. You want to make sure your bridal bouquet compliments and enhances your dress. This will be determined by the style, intricate details or lack of details and formality of your dress. Ounce that decision is made you can begin picking flowers for your bridal bouquet!Like most of the components in your wedding the way to get started is to look at pictures. You probably won't know exactly what your style is or the exact flowers you want. But look, look on the web, look in bridal magazines and browse the photo gallery we build just for you!
The first rule in designing is that there are very few rules! Hooray! You are the designer, if you can imagine it, most likely you can have it made. The bouquet should compliment you proportionally. A shorter petite bride to be wouldn't want a huge cascading bouquet, as it would overpower you and may even cover up the details of your dress. In addition a tall statuesque bride to be wouldn't want a small hand tied bouquet; a hand tied bouquet would be fine as long as it is proportional to your body type. The biggest rule is to avoid extremes that appear unbalanced.
Color and fragrance play a huge part in the symphony of the bouquet. Collect paint swatches from your local hardware store to aid you with coordinating and mixing color pallets. You may have a favorite fragrance and every time you put it on fond memories come to mind. It will be the same if you choose fragrant flowers, you will journey back to your wedding day at the mere whiff of the fragrance. You have so many flower choices!
There are several things you can do to make wise choices and save money on your flowers. Most flowers are available year around. But consider the month and season of your wedding. If you choose flowers that are "in Season" you can significantly reduce the money you spend on your flowers. Instead of using regular roses use spray roses they are more cost efficient and so sweet. If your ideal bridal bouquet has gardenias, roses and lily of the valley you should expect to pay top dollar. With that decision you may have to opt for less expensive flowers for your bridesmaid's bouquet and church. Remember a large bridal bouquet doesn't mean the bank will be broken when you are done designing it, choose flowers that are in season and less expensive. You could use stock, hydrangea, and roses to create a large abundant bridal boutique and it would be more cost effective than using casablanca lilies, hydrangea and stephanotis, just a few of the most expensive flowers.
Another detail that can enhance and personalize your bouquet and your bridesmaids is the use of ribbons to finish stems. This treatment is typical with hand tied bouquets. Wrapping the stems with coordinating ribbon adds to their overall beauty. You can have ribbon streamers hanging down and even attach shells or other trinkets to the ends of the ribbon streamers. If you are having an outdoor
wedding you may choose daisies and sunflowers with stems wrapped with burlap and then a thinner ribbon of coordinating color.
Be open to your florist and their suggestions. They have been doing this for a long time. The toss bouquet is a reception staple. It is a wildly fun part of the evening's events that your single girlfriends and guests really look forward to; it is fun to watch and signals the beginning of the end of the reception. This suggestion is one of the best to come along since________________________. You can make this one yourself! Take 4 or 5 stems of flowers and bunch them together with pretty ribbon. Then take an additional 8 - 10 stems and bunch them together around the smaller bouquet and tie them with a single string. Attach coordinating ribbons to each stem and include an attached written sentiment, love quote or favorite saying. Just before you toss the bouquet untie it. This allows several of the single gals to be a benefactor of the fun!
Be open to your florist and their suggestions. They have been doing this for a long time. If your florist doesn't seem to understand your vision, then visit with another. Always ask to look at examples of previous bridal work and ask for references. I always suggest visiting with 2 or 3 before deciding on one.
In addition to the photo gallery we have included charts for flowers and when they are in season.
Enjoy and happy bouquet desiging!
