Sensational Singapore: The 'Lion City' Fortress and Financial Citadel!

Civilisation on the island of Singapore consisted of a Malay fishing village, at the mouth of what is now known as the Singapore River, in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles claimed this area on behalf of the British East India Company. A trading post was quickly established here, and a port was established as an important part of the spice route.

Eventually, Singapore became an important centre for military activities and commerce for the British Empire, as well as a power base for the British in South East Asia. After the Japanese quickly overran Singapore in WWII, the notion of Singapore as a "Fortress City" disappeared, but the commercial success of this city-state has endured!

The Geography of Lion City Singapore!

Where is Singapore?

Singapore, more correctly known as the Republic of Singapore, is located in South-east Asia. It is an island state at the southern tip of the Malaysia Peninsula, between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Singapore is connected to the city of Johor Bahru in the state of Johor (Malaysia) by a man-made causeway to the north. There is also a second link in the form of a bridge to Johor to the west in the Tuas area. Singapore also has dozens of smaller islands, of which Jurong Island, Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa are the largest. Since Singapore basically consists of only one city, there are no further administrative divisions.

Why is Singapore The "Lion City"?

The English language name Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, "Lion-city," but it is possible that one element of its name had a more distant original source. Pura comes from Sanskrit puram, "city, fortress," and is related to Greek polis, "citadel, city." Singa- comes from Sanskrit simhah, which means lion. Even today, the city-state is referred to as the Lion City.

Recent studies of Singapore, however, indicate that lions probably never lived there, not even Asiatic lions; the beast seen by Sang Nila Utama was most likely a tiger, probably the Malayan Tiger. Read more on Wikipedia.

Sensational Singapore on Wikipedia!

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The microstate lies 137 kilometres (85 miles) north of the equator, south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of Indonesia's Riau Islands. At 710.2 km2 (274.2 sq mi), Singapore, the smallest nation in South-east Asia, is by orders of magnitude the largest of the three remaining sovereign city-states in the world (the others being Monaco and Vatican City).

Before European settlement, the island now known as Singapore was the site of a Malay fishing village at the mouth of the Singapore River. Several hundred indigenous Orang Laut people also lived along the nearby coast, rivers and on smaller islands. In 1819 the British East India Company, led by Sir Stamford Raffles, established a trading post on the island, which was used as a port along the spice route. Singapore became one of the most important commercial and military centres of the British Empire, and the hub of British power in South-east Asia.
