What is Autism? - A short Introduction

Autism is part of a spectrum of developmental disability that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Autism also commonly referred to as autistic or autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Autism causes restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old.

A 2005 review estimated a prevalence of 6.0-6.5 per 1,000 for ASD.

For people with autism, they see things differently. To them, the world may be just a mass of people, places and events which they struggle daily to figure out how they fit to. They need to use long time to figure out and make sense of new things they experience and which can cause them considerable anxiety.

Schools for Children with Autism in Singapore

Currently, there are 3 autism-specific schools in Singapore. They are set up: Pathlight School in 2004, Singapore Autism School in 2005 and St Andrew's Autism School in 2006.

Between 2001 and 2006, there are many Special Education School (SPED) schools to offer classes for autistic children in Singapore. Currently, there are classes for children with autism in 16 Sped schools run by Voluntary Welfare Organisations.
