The Deal

Esplanade building at night, where the driver will get to see.

The announcement follows the agreement of a five-year deal between FOM CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Singapore entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, and the Singapore Tourism Board.

The new race is scheduled to take place towards the end of the calendar in September or October. The timing of the night event means it can be broadcast at a convenient time for European TV audiences as well as thrilling local fans. It is also expected to have a hugely positive economic impact on the region.

The Singapore Grand Prix will take place on public roads around the Marina Bay area. The design proposal includes powerful lighting systems that will replicate daylight conditions and the most stringent safety protocols will be applied to ensure driver and spectator safety.

Grandstand seating and hospitality areas lining the track will be able to accommodate more than 80,000 spectators, while a permanent pit area with deluxe paddock facilities will be built adjacent to the existing Singapore Flyer complex.

Ong Beng Seng

Short Biography of Ong Beng Seng

Ong Beng Seng was born into a wealthy family in Malaysia, but the family moved to Singapore in 1950 when Ong was just four years old. Ong quickly displayed a talent for making money. Already by the early 1970s Ong had founded a business selling shipping insurance, earning his first fortune. Later described as a secretive, yet flamboyant tycoon (Ong became known as one of the leaders of the Singapore jet-set), Ong married Christina Ong, giving him a powerful father-in-law, Peter Fu Yun Siak. Fu's company, Kuo International, had started out as a timber and wax trader, before expanding into the oil market as well. Christina Ong, meanwhile, had begun building up a portfolio of designer brands-including the Armani franchise-later becoming known as the "Queen of Bond Street," given her extensive holdings in London's fashion center.

Ong Beng Seng joined Fu in business in 1975, emerging as a shrewd trader with a knack for spotting opportunities. In the early 1980s, Ong recognized the potential for entering the property market, and formed Hotel Properties Pte Ltd. in 1981 in order to lead Kuo International's acquisition of hotels and other properties. The company made its first purchase in 1982, acquiring the Hilton Hotel in Singapore. Later that same year, Hotel Properties was taken public with a listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange. At that time the company changed its name to Hotel Properties Ltd.

Through the 1980s, HPL activities revolved especially around property investments, as Ong led the company into the purchase of stakes in various high-profile properties.

At the start of the 1990s, HPL's hotel holdings remained quite modest, with just the Hilton and the Four Seasons in Singapore. Yet, as others were fleeing the depressed properties market at the beginning of the decade, the Ongs recognized a fresh opportunity to acquire and develop prestigious properties cheaply. In the early 1990s, the company lay the groundwork for two prominent London hotels, the Halkin, in London's Belgravia neighborhood, and the Metropolitan, also in the West End. HPL also became a prominent investor in the huge Canary Wharf development. Meanwhile, the Ongs continued to build up their

HIstory of Formula One in Singapore

It begin in 1962....

First organised in 1962, the race was initally known as the Malaysian Grand Prix and was one of Singapore's major sporting attractions. The name changed to the "Singapore Grand Prix" after Singapore attained its independence in 1965.

The event was discontinued after 1973 for a variety of reasons, including an increase in traffic and the consequent inconvenience of having to close roads for the event, and a fatal accident during the 1972 race.

First Circuit in Singapore

Thomson Road Circuit

The track was 3.023 miles with a fast undulating one-mile stretch called the Thomson Mile (actually the start of what was then Nee Soon Road) and a series of esses on the back section linked by hairpins at either end.

First Proposed Circuit

Singapore's proposed Grand Prix street circuit includes two bridges and three-quarters of a roundabout.

The circuit is designed by Hermann Tilke the organisers are believed to have in mind. A section of the track passes along the waterfront which seems like a viable location for pits and a start/finish line.

Revised Circuit

The revised Singapore F1 GP route is a better one for drivers and less disruptive for businesses, as Steve Slater says it is faster, with fewer sharp turns and bends.

The revised track which is also longer, 5.2 kilometres instead of the earlier 4.8 km initial proposal.

Singapore will begin road works on its street circuit

Singapore will begin road works on its street circuit next month before hosting its debut Formula One Grand Prix event next year, the government and the promoter said Friday.

They explained the 5.05-kilometre (3.13-mile) street route would offer "a number of overtaking opportunities, fast turns and technically challenging sections."

More than 70 percent of the circuit is made up of the city-state's existing road network.

In July, the world motorsport's governing body FIA set the date for the Singapore Grand Prix on September 28 next year. The design of the paddock, which will house the control tower, garages for the teams, hospitality lounges, the press room and other facilities, is also being finalised, it said.

Hermann Tilke

Short Biography of Hermann Tilke

Hermann Tilke (born December 31, 1954 in Olpe) is a German architect, designer of Formula One motor racing circuits and auto racer.

During the 1980s, Tilke competed in touring car racing, mainly on the old Nürburgring Nordschleife curcuit. He also competed in VLN endurance racing and 24 Hours Nürburgring. He and Dirk Adorf won in 2003 and 2004 some VLN races with a V8Star.

Tilke established Tilke Engineering in 1984, combining skills in architecture, civil engineering and electronic engineering to provide complete solutions for motor racing and waste disposal projects.

One of his first, minor tasks was a short access road at the Nürburgring, earned due to contacts made by his racing efforts there. He later redesigned the first turn complex of the circuit in 2002.

His first major job was the dramatic change from the fast Österreichring to the much shorter A1-Ring in Austria, in the 1990s.

Having made numerous changes and safety improvements to the established stable of F1 circuits, Tilke secured the contracts to design many high-profile new world circuits from scratch.

Tilke was also involved in the radical overhauls of the Hockenheimring in Germany and most recently the Fuji Speedway in Japan. Tilke has also revealed plans for the reconstruction of Jacarepaguá in Rio, which will have staged the 2007 PAN American Games.

Tilke Engineering is also due to carry out work on Circuit de Catalunya, Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Nürburgring, Silverstone Circuit and La Ciudad del Motor de Aragon (Spain).

As of May 2007, Tilke is also currently working on the track for the Vodafone Bucharest Challenge 2007 The track will host the European FIA GT3 Championship, the GB Formula 3 and the Logan Cup race.
