Singapore History
Let's start from 1819, this is the day Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore. Sir Stamford Raffles is from the British Empire and Singapore is part of its British Colonial. It started off from a small fishing village and ever since his arrival. He developed Singapore with the help of William Farquhar. The plan included levelling one hill to set up a commercial centre (today's Shenton Way) and constructing government buildings around Fort Canning. Raffles, and the first Resident of Singapore, William Farquhar, gradually moulded Singapore from a jungle and swamp-ridden backwater with poor sanitation and little modern infrastructure to a successful entreport and colonial outpost. Hospitals, schools and a water supply system were built. Soon, boatloads of immigrants from India and China were coming to Singapore, in search of prosperity and a better life.
Singapore gained its independence after the second world war from 1955 and went into a brief merger with Malaysia from 1963 to 1965. As there were a lot of conflict in idea and policy, Singapore separated from Malaysia and became independence since then. With the leadership of Lee Kwan Yew, we have the Singapore today. I am truly grateful and thankful to be a citizen of Singapore, this is one of the best city to be on earth.
