Bruno Mars: The New Michael Jackson?

I was already a fan of the Bruno Mars hit song Grenade, but it wasn't until I saw him perform it live on an edition of The Graham Norton Show in a stripped down unplugged version that I really appreciated his soulful singing voice.

This young American singer has already been compared to the late Michael Jackson, and it is easy to understand why. With vocal chords that echo the best days of the King of Pop and an immense talent for writing songs with meaning and an instant hook, Bruno Mars is well on his way to bridging the gap between star and superstar.

His first album Doo-Wops and Hooligans has already been a huge international success, topping the music charts worldwide. If what has been heard already is any indication of what is to come, then Bruno Mars is assured of a very bright future.

Bruno Mars: Grenade - Live

So there I was, settling down to watch one of my favourite talk shows, The Graham Norton Show, when he announced that Bruno Mars would be appearing. Cool, I thought, thinking that he would be lip synching to his latest hit. How wrong could I be. The young singer settled into a live, almost acoustic, version of Grenade and he had me hooked. He also had me as a fan.

Nothin' on You: B.o.B With Bruno Mars

I am not a lover of rap music and this song is as close to rap as I want to get. Bruno Mars joins B.o.B on a light rap song that became an international hit during 2010. Soulful breaks and a great hook make up the track Nothin' on You.

Billionaire: Travie McCoy With Bruno Mars

A light, reggae feel to this track which also found its way to the top of the charts internationally. It was Travie McCoy's debut single, but Bruno Mars is heavily featured as guest vocalist. Highly rhythmic, if you are ready for swaying a little under the summer sun, but be warned this one does contain the dreaded "F-Bomb" in several places.

From the EP It's Better If You Don't Understand, released in the Summer of 2010, featuring both B.o.B and Cee Lo Green on a digital download only track that highlights Bruno Mars' clever writing skills, while in places, the video demonstrates his remarkable resemblance to Michael Jackson.

When history books address the pop seismology of the early 21st century, a chapter will have to be set aside for a discussion of the Sheraton Waikiki in the late 1980s.
