Singer Featherweight Sewing Machine for Quilting

Vintage Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines are light in weight, functional, and nostalgic

I visited a local quilting club and spent the evening looking at the different "tools of the trade" and was especially drawn to the small, light, Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines that some were using. Some were very old but still worked well, others were newer models.

I do have a Singer sewing machine, it's about 30 years old, nice, but cumbersome, and I'd rather buy something smaller like the Singer Featherweight. They have a pretty vintage look with ornate gold decoration, and I just love old things.

Read on and learn more about the Singer Featherweight Sewing, and using Featherweight Sewing Machines for quilting. We also feature some Singer Featherweights that are for sale on this page.

Is the Singer Featherweight still the machine of choice for quilting?

Opinion of a Professional Seamstress

I asked my neighbor and friend, who is a professional seamstress, what she thought of quilting with a Singer Featherweight Sewing Machine, and whether she thought I should consider buying one. She said she had a good friend down south local to her former home town who has helped her choose her sewing machines for years. She had called to ask him recently about the Featherweight. He said they were very good little machines, and for a time were the most desirable of sewing machines for quilting.

He also said that trend (using Singer Featherweights) is slowing down just little bit, but it is still a very popular choice by quilters. There are new models of sewing machines designed just for quilting that some are buying instead.

It was apparent at the gathering I attended with my neighbor that the Singer Featherweight is still a popular machine. The size makes it easy to take with you to a quilting club, or quilting guild as they are called in our town, when a hands-on training session is taking place at the meeting.

Facts About Singer Featherweights

History, how to date them, and much more

I was delighted to find a website that went into a great detail about Singer Featherweights. Here are the first few sentences and a link to the complete text:

"The Singer Featherweight portable sewing machine is a model made by that company between 1933 and 1964. The machine (model 221), adapted from an earlier portable, the Standard SewHandy (which company was bought out by Singer) weighs about 11 pounds and has been found to be an ideal machine for quilters and other sewers to take to classes or "on location." Very quiet and sturdily made with all-metal parts (mostly aluminum), the Featherweight sews only straight stitches but it sews them very well. Even the oldest machines, if they've been cared for, still sew wonderfully...." Click here to read much more.

Do You Sew and Quilt by Hand or Machine?

Which do you prefer?

At quilting and other sewing craft classes, there are some woman who do much of their sewing by machine, with just a little work by hand, and others who prefer to do their quilts or other needlework from start to finish by hand....it takes longer, but there is something special about work done by hand.

How about you, what do you prefer?

Fitzcharming says:

Both, I'm learning more and more about how to quilt by machine and I've got to admit it's easier.

By machine. But I think some crafts should be by hand.

shannonpatricia says:

I'm on the fence with this one.

StaciJansma says:

depends on my project - to be honest. I can do either

I do most of my sewing and quilting by hand

earthybirthymama says:

I have three hand sewn quilts that I made more than 15 years ago that still need backs. The are completely hand stitched, I like to portability of hand quilting, not unlike knitting and crochet.

happynutritionist says:

I love hand sewing, but if I'm going to accomplish something BIG, like a blanket, I'm going to have to give in and use a machine if I want to finish it in my lifetime:-)

Singer Corporation Fed Our Family

And a bit of personal family information

Though various companies make sewing machines, none is as well known for the product as the Singer Corporation. When I was growing up, my father worked for a company that merged with Singer, so the name had even more meaning for our family. Singer acquired or merged with Kearfott. My father worked most of his life, and all of my childhood years until his retirement, for Kearfott, then Singer-Kearfott, in the aeronautics department. We remember well when the name changed to Singer Kearfott.

The following print caught my eye because of the connection with Singer even though it is not written in English.

The old Singer Featherweights are quite popular in the Antique Mall that I manage. The quilters and crafters love them. It is difficult to keep any in stock. They still work so well. Great recommendation!

Great product review! I used to sew when my boys were little but now just a few home decor items, like cushions or table runners! Nice lens!

My mother owns a Singer and she believes Singer is synonymous with sewing machine:) I have a Brother which I happen to think is wonderful but I do not carry it out.
Some years ago I was a member of a quilting group. Our instructor/leader brought her machine to our gatherings, but we all quilted by hand so I don't remember it being used.
    Great Lens!

Wow, those pictures are just gorgeous! I would love to have one just to look at! As a klutz, it is usually best if I stay away from pointy things though :)
  • Brookelorren Aug 23, 2009 @ 10:33 pm | delete
I do a little bit of both. I do have a featherweight machine that my Grandma gave me, and it's a good machine. I have another machine too.

Some jobs are easier to do on the machine... like large projects or clothes. But sometimes sewing by hand is better... I hemmed my husband's suit with a blind hem stitch last night... I don't have a machine that can do that.

    Great lens!
  • Heather426 Aug 23, 2009 @ 10:06 pm | delete
I love to sew so I really enjoyed the review of these machines. I had one growing up and loved it. And my aunt is saving me hers for later. 5*
