The phrase "Singin' in the Rain" usually conjures up the image of Gene Kelly dancing around in puddles. It often gets you humming or singing the tune and more often than not makes you smile :)
I like to web surf. So I input the phrase into 2 or 3 of my favourite search engines, this lens covers some of where my travels took me. There will be references to the traditional and then the not so.
Hope you enjoy reading this lens as much as I do creating it.
Singin' in The Rain - The Lyrics
Gene Kelly's version.
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo...
I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin',
Singin' in the rain
Dancin' in the rain
Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
I'm happy again!
I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain!
I'm dancin' and singin' in the rain...
The Song.
in the beginning
It is not exactly clear when the song was written. Some claim that the song was performed as early as 1927. The song with lyrics by Arthur Freed and music by Nacio Herb Brown was published in 1929.It was originally performed by Cliff (Ukulele Ike) Edwards in the musical extravaganza The Hollywood Revue of 1929. The song was also performed at the end of this musical by the entire cast.
The song has also been in musical movies by Jimmy Durante and Judy Garland

some other performances
One of my favourite artists, English singer-pianist, Jamie Cullum performs the song in his own great style on his 2003 Album Twentysomething"His take on "Singing In the Rain" is electric and mesmerizing." this quote from one Amazon review about sums it up for me too.

Mint Royale and Volksawagen remix
In 2005 the group, Mint Royale, released "Waiting in the Rain" on the "Wait for You" EP - a remix of Singin' in the Rain, which was featured in the January 2005 Volkswagen Golf GTI commercial. It reached #20 on the UK Singles Chart after it was released as a single (remixed and renamed as "Singing In the Rain"). This version also features on the album "See You in the Morning".The updated, body popping remix is accompanied by a clever video in which a dancer in an alley is joined by 2 "robot" like animations which form themselves from the litter lying in the alleyway. Worth a look!

Volkswagen GTI TV Commercial
classic used for a classic
The Brief for the Television commercial was:- Remix Singin' in the Rain to show the car as a classic that survives reinvention, just like a bodypopping Gene Kelly.
Richard Chambers, of advertising agency DDB who produced the advert, says much study went into making the set as authentic as possible.
"We've tried to match the look and feel of everything - from the buildings to the scale and layout, the lighting, the wardrobe, the rain. Even some of the equipment on the set is the similar to what would have been used when the film was made in the early 1950s."
The set took 22 people 14 days to build, with the aim of reminding viewers all the way through of the original, while they would realise it was a "completely modern piece of film".
Once it was created, the task was to find dancers who could do sufficiently modern moves. These dancers where then dressed like Gene Kelly and while dancing care was taken to make sure their faces were in the right place and angles, because eventually when it was all finished images of Kelly's face were mapped on to dancers, using today's technology

Which brings us back to..
.. the beginning
The beginning is not the quite the beginning but where most people think of this beginning. The Classic 1952 Film, Singin' in the Rain, was written quite quickly based on the success at the time of "An American in Paris"--which won the Academy Award as the best picture of 1991, also starred Gene Kelly and had the same director, Stanley Donen.
Unlike most other Films of the time, Singin' in the Rain was not based on a Broadway stage production. It worked the other way around, with a London and Broadway musical in the 1980s being based on the movie.
The Original Song from The Hollywood Revue of 1929 was the inspiration for the entire film and the main cast of the film comprised:
Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood,
Donald O'Connor as Cosmo Brown,
Debbie Reynolds as Kathy Seldon,
Jean Hagen as Lina Lamont.
There is so much more written about the film that I couldn't possibly fit it all in here
And so travels are nearly ended, I'm going to leave it for another day and hope you've enjoyed the other trivia I found so far.
Bonus: A Rose by any other name..
.. for the Romance in your life
The Rose pictured in the image is the Singin' in the Rain Rose!.The Rose:
This rose revels in all kinds of weather with its cinnamon-apricot flowers that gently shift tempo to golden and blushed hues of apricot. Clusters of five to nine flowers supported by dark glossy green foliage create a dramatically choreographed display of elegance. Singin' in the Rain grows to 4 to 5 feet with upright, free branching canes.
Sam McGredy hybridized this sweet musk scented rose from a combination of Sexy Rexy and Pot o' Gold. Edmunds' Roses was the introducer.
Bonus Tip:
If you're having a nice romantic evening in, you could hire the movie, with it's slushy love theme and then why not send some roses too!
