Hy Zaret

Lyricist of Singing Science Records

Hy ZaretBorn Hyman Harry Zaritsky August 21, 1907 New York City, New York. He legally shortened his last name to Zaret in 1934. Mr. Zaret died July 2, 2007 at the age of 99, in Westport, Connecticut.
Mr. Zaret attended public schools, where he often skipped classes to read in the local library. Later, he graduated from Brooklyn Law School and practiced law for a while, then wrote and produced shows for radio and television. Most of his working life was spent writing songs.
In 1955, Composer Alex North asked Mr. Zaret to write the lyrics for a song in the low-budget prison film titled "Unchained". He refused to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. "Unchained Melody" expresses the lonliness of a lover who has not seen his love in a very long time. It Was recorded by more than 300 artists, including Lena Horne, Guy Lombardo, the Righteous Brothers, Elvis Presley and U2. It even won an Academy Award nomination for best original song. It regained massive popularity when used in the 1990 blockbuster film "Ghost". In 1992, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers declared it the year's most-performed song. In 1999, Ascap announced it was one of the 25 most-performed songs and musical works of the 20th century. In 2003, Ascap called it the most-performed love song of the 1950s. In 2007, The Songwriters Hall of Fame honored "Unchained Melody" with its Towering Song award for having "influenced the culture in a unique way over the years."
William Stirrat, an electrical engineer, claimed he had written "Unchained Melody" under the pen name Hy Zaret. He even legally changed his name to Hy Zaret. The legal dispute was resolved in favor of the original Mr. Zaret.

"Unchained Melody" became one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century.

Tom Glazer

Folksinger, Songwriter, Guitarist, Composer and Author

Thomas Zachariah Glazier was born September 2nd, 1914 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His Russian father died of influenza when he was 4 years old. His mother married a man who did not want Tom and his two older brothers, so they were first raised by relatives, then went to live in a Jewish orphanage.

In public school, Tom sang in the choir and learned to play the tuba, guitar and string bass. He also enjoyed his father's classical record collection. At 15, he quit high school to help support his family during the Depression.

When he was 17, Tom hitchhiked to New York City and worked at Macy's during the day while he finished high school at night. He also earned money playing the string bass and tuba in jazz and military bands. Glazer studied English literature at City College of New York for 3 years. He sang in a Catholic church choir to support himself. Glazer left college his senior year, to work at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. There, he met Alan Lomax, who introduced him to Folk music. Mr. Glazer bought a guitar and began a career as a folksinger. At some point, he changed the spelling of his last name. He had the opportunity to perform at the White House for Eleanor Roosevelt, with a folk-singing group.

Glazer married and moved back to New York City planning to attend the Juiliard School of Music, but his music career took off and he never did. He gave over 600 live performances in the first 20 years of his career. Glazer helped popularize folk music in the 1940s and 1960s, along with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, Leadbelly, and Josh White. He wrote lyrics for several hits including "More" and "Melody of Love," recorded by Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, the Ink Spots, the Weavers, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. From 1945-1947 he hosted a radio show called, "Tom Glazer's Ballad Box." In 1957, he composed the musical score for the film "A Face in the Crowd," starring Andy Griffith.

Glazer was a social activist who fought for civil rights. He is quoted as saying, "The most vital thing I know of today is to prevent violence while changing the world for the better if possible." Bob Dylan recorded his song "Talking Inflation Blues" in 1960. Glazer also wrote, "Because All Men Are Brothers" and "Old Soldiers Never Die," among others. He hosted 2 radio shows for children in the 1960s. In 1963, "On Top of Spaghetti" reached number 14 on the Billboard charts. Young People's Records sold close to a million of Glazer's albums during the 1950s and 1960s.

Glazer also published collections of fingerplays for children with titles like, "Do your ears hang low?", several treasuries of traditional songs, and a book of original poetry. He produced the musical "Woody Guthrie's American Song" written by his son Peter. He died February 21, 2003 in Rochester, NY at the age of 88, survived by 2 sons.
