Single Parent Families in Australia

Yes, being a single parent is difficult for many, with a huge range of problems and hard work. It can be very emotional, especially in the beginning. However, there comes a time when many of the problems are worked out, or adjusted to. Challenges with your ex-partner, schools, work, housework, government, your kids themselves, etc etc etc. And this is the time to start rebuilding your life - both for you, and for your kids.

Single parents need FUN, support and companionship with other single parents. No matter how many friends you have, if they are not single parents, they can never understand what you're going through. It can be very lonely in a crowd.

That's why the Single Parent Family Association Inc. was born. Founded by 4 single parents, and totally self-funded, it now has hundreds of members. It runs a social group for single mothers and single fathers, with or without their kids. Functions are for adults only, or for families, and are held 2 - 4 times each and every week.

Threre's always somewhere to go, and some like-minded people to go there with. And lots of fun and support.

They hold parties, weekends away, bowling days, picnics, harbour cruises, barbeques, pub nights and heaps more - always changing!

4 single parents - 2 access and 2 custodial, started the group up in 2006. It is a non-profit group, run entirely by volunteers - single parents who are helping themselves - and others - recreate their lives.

If you are a single parent, and in need of some fun and support, consider starting up a group in your area.

Twelve years after it's inception, the group is still going strong. New members are being added all the time, while some of the old members, who have re-established thir lives, have faded away. And that is fine - it means the group is very dynamic, and members are getting on with their lives and no longer need the support.

Current members are contributing to the group by participating in events and functions, hosting functions or helping out, or hold a position on the 14 strong committee.

The bi-monthly newsletter that lists all the upcoming functions shows the range of activities that members can attend, both adult only, or for parents and their children.

This is a very cohesive group, with hundreds of members and many hundreds of children involved.
