Sir Frank Dicksee (British, 1853-1928)
Sir Frank Dicksee was a genre and portrait painter born into an artistic family. His father was painter and etcher Thomas Francis Dicksee and his Aunt Margaret Dicksee. Dicksee was trained by his father and a member of the Langham Sketching Club prior to entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1871 where his first exhibit was in 1875. Dicksee was not a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but his work is considered Pre-Raphaelite in both style and technique with it's wistful, romantic figures.

Dicksee was also influenced by the Venetian School after a visit to Italy in 1882. An opponent to modernisim, the subjects of his paintings were usually biblical, literary or historical figures and he was known for his elegant society portraits.In 1881 Frank Dicksee was elected AR, 1891 RA and then in 1924 he became the President of the Royal Academy. Sir Frank Dicksee was knighted in 1925 and died in 1928.

Frank Dicksee was a member of a famous artistic family, his father, brother, and sister Margaret were each popular artists, and the family resided in the Bloomsbury region of London. He was origionally educated by his father, prior to enrolling at the Royal Academy schools in 1870. Among the guest lecturers who taught him, were the prominent senior academicians Lord Frederick Leighton 1830-1896 and John Everet Millais. Dicksee was a leading student, gaining numerous awards and medals. Like several other artists of the time his early vocation was mostly devoted to in book illustration, along with a few stained glass window patterns. He began showing at the Royal Academy in the middle 1870s, and likewise presented at the Grosvenor Gallery, although his genuine foundation was always the Academy. Dicksee attained his repute with the painting Harmony,which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1877, and purchased by the Chantry Bequest.
Frank Dicksee was appointed ARA in 1881, and became a total RA ten years later. Several of his paintings comprised of melodramatic historical and mythological views. He likewise was a celebrated painter of graceful, highly-finished portraits of stylish women, that served to lend him material success. Several of such portraits are so exquisite, it is truly awkward to reject of them - pleased was the stylish dame whose portrait was created by Dicksee! He also created landscape painting*. Dicksee resided in St John's Wood, and stayed a bachelor. He was one of the 19th century painters who outlasted his period, and was quite distressed with evolutions in the beginning of twentieth century. Rather amazingly, Dicksee was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1924, carrying out the office with style and tact. Physically he was a tall, handsome, aristocrat figure, with a captivating laid-back manner. Similar to his predecessor Edward Poynter, the conventional predilection of his art eventually separated him from the arts mainstream of the day. Dicksee was knighted in 1925 and passed away in 1928.
