SISTERCHICK n.: a friend who shares the deepest wonders of your heart, loves you like a sister, and provides a reality check when you're being a brat.

THE SISTERCHICK NOVELS n.: a wonderful collection of books about friendship, world travel and chocolate by Christian author, Robin Jones Gunn.

BE WARNED: the addiction is very contagious...

My Sisterchick Story

I received a book in the mail one day that started an obsession. The book was from my best friend from high school (pictured with me above) and it was entitled Sisterchicks do the Hula. She had underlined a sentence in the prologue, too. It said something along the lines of "Do you still have the key to the backdoor of my heart?" Sniff. I was forever hooked.

Since then, we've read all the Sisterchicks books. My girlfriend and I haven't decided yet just where we want to go on our own Sisterchick adventure, but we do know that we will be going on one someday. In the meantime, we've spread the Sisterchick addiction far and wide. I've given Sisterchicks books to my mom, my other gal-pals, my sister-in-law, and my mother-in-law. And I know my mother-in-law's been busy sending off copies, too. There's just something so wonderful about the friendships in these books. Or maybe it's just the chocolate...

So what exactly are the Sisterchicks books? Well, they are Christian novels about best friends and/or sisters that involve God, world travel and good plans gone haywire. They are a thoroughly enjoyable read. And the life lessons that are learned along the way will affect you, too.

So now I hope to pass along the addiction to you. Below you will find all six (soon to be seven!) Sisterchicks books listed with my own personal review.

Sisterchicks in Gondolas

Book 6

Sisterchicks in GondolasSisterchick Synopsis: At a fifteenth-century palace in Venice, best friends/sisters-in-law Jenna and Sue welcome the gondola-paced Italian lifestyle! And over boiling pots of pasta, they dare each other to dream again.

My Rating: 4 Stars

My Review: I thought this was a sweet story about friendship, understanding life's hardships and discovering the best gelato in Italy (Mmm, gelato!). Jenna and Sue head off to Venice for a week, not knowing a stitch of Italian between them. They haven't come as tourists to see all the sights and sounds of Vienzia. They have come to cook for a group that is staying at a fifteenth century restored palace for a retreat. So instead of rushing around, trying to take everything in, these two sisters-in-law have a chance to slow down and savor a bit of the real the Venetian life-style. Thus, this book had a wonderful laid-back pace and perspective. And it also made you wish that you were spending a week in Venice, buying bakery goods and cooking for old friends, too.

I have only one complaint about this book. The girls on the cover do not match the ages given for the girls in the story. The girls on the cover look 25-35 to me. But Jenna and Sue were supposed to be over 50. I had the hardest time reconciling the two. I couldn't stop picturing the girls on the cover. But other than that, I really enjoyed this book.

Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La!

Book 5

Sisterchicks Say Ooh La LaSisterchick Synopsis: Painting toenails and making promises under the canopy of a princess bed seals a friendship for life! Fifty years of ups and downs find Lisa and Amy still Best Friends Forever... and off on an unforgettable Paris rendezvous!

My Rating: 5 Stars

My Review: This is my most favorite Sisterchicks book to date! But that's probably because it makes me think of a good friend of mine and how this book could describe our own trip to Paris. I can relate to the friendship shared by these two long-time friends! Reunited after several years apart, Amy reminds Lisa of one of their childhood promises-their plan to visit Paris and walk down the Champs Elysees in style! There are so many touching moments in this book and I don't want to ruin anything for you, so I won't explain in detail the scenes I liked best. Suffice it to say that this book had me smiling and laughing more than any other Sisterchick book to date. It's number one on my list. And yes, I passed it right along to that girlfriend it made me think of as soon as I was done reading it!

Sisterchicks Down Under

Book 4

Sisterchicks Down UnderSisterchick Synopsis: Kathleen meets Jill at the Chocolate Fish cafe in New Zealand and they instantly forge a friendship. Now Robin Jones Gunn reveals their crazy adventures in classic Sisterchick style!

My Rating: 3 Stars

My Review: I'm sorry to say that this was not one of my favorite Sisterchick stories. Maybe that's because I could relate too well to the main character's loneliness in a new place and that set a tone for the book that left me feeling blue. I also thought that the two new friends hit it off a bit too quickly. Even though that's happened to me in my life, I just didn't relate to these two characters, so I couldn't really buy into the depth of their friendship. But it is still a good story about love and forgiveness. I'd recommend it, it's just not my favorite.

Sisterchicks in Sombreros

Book 3

Sisterchicks in SombrerosSisterchick Synopsis: Two Canadian sisters embark on a journey to claim their inheritance-beachfront property in Mexico--not expecting so many bizarre, wacky problems! But there's nothing a little coconut cake can't cure...

My Rating: 4 Stars

My Review: I thought this was a sweet story about sisterly love and friendship. Hey, even sisters can be Sisterchicks! And this story has a little romance thrown in to boot. I think I'll always remember the lady in Mexico, making her own tortillas and how simplicity can be just plain beautiful. The life lessons that the characters go through are my favorite parts of each Sisterchicks book.

Sisterchicks Do the Hula

Book 2

Sisterchicks do the Hula Sisterchick Synopsis: It'll take more than an unexpected pregnancy to keep two middle-aged sisterchicks from reliving their college years with a little Waikiki wackiness - and learning to hula for the first time.

My Rating: 4 Stars

My Review: The first Sisterchick book I ever read--This is the one that started the addiction for me! I thought it had a mellow tone and pace to it. This book certainly made me want to visit Hawaii. It was a wonderful story about two long-time friends and again, like with all these books, I could totally relate to the lives of the characters and the things they were experiencing. Sisterchicks books are like cheap therapy. You don't have to leave home to learn a new lesson about life.

Sisterchicks on the Loose

Book 1

Sisterchicks on the Loose Sisterchick Synopsis: Zany antics abound when best friends Sharon and Penny take off on a midlife adventure to Finland, returning home with a new view of God and a new zest for life.

My Rating: 5 Stars

My Review: I loved the crazy pace of this book. And that's because these Sisterchicks are really on the loose, hopping all over Europe! Penny reminded me so much of my mom, I sent her a copy of this book. And you have to get this book just to read Sharon's experience on the flight over to Finland. Fabulous story telling. This story has a fond place in my heart. It's my second favorite Sisterchicks book.

Gardenias for Breakfast

Mother & Daughter Adventures

I like to think of this book as an unofficial Sisterchick book. It's about a mother and her daugther on a cross country road trip. The most important thing I learned from this book is that life is about the journey, not the destination. I know that's a trite comment, but read it and you'll know just what I mean.
