They might be the bad guys, but they seem to have a lot more fun!
The Sith pre-dates Sidious and the vents of Episodes 1 through to 6 by about... 5,000 years. Actually, probably a lot longer than even that.
They've been around for millennia, wreaking havoc, in their quest for control, no matter the foe. The Sith were the Sith even without the dark side of the Force. The Force just became another weapon in their arsenal. A tool to be used on their journey to reign over everyone and everything.
And it's a trend that continues after Return of the Jedi too. Han and Leia get married, have kids of their own (starting with twins) and one of their offspring eventually turn to the dark side and the lure of being a Sith Lord.
