My Review of Secrets of Dog Training, formerly called Sit Stay Fetch

Dog training is a complex matter, since dogs are complex and so are we! One of the most popular dog training ebooks on the internet now is Daniel Stevenson's Secrets of Dog Training.

Is that because it's well promoted (which it is) or does it really deliver good solid information?

You certainly get a lot for your money. Besides the main PDF ebook, there are some others PLUS audio and video files you download.

The contents of the sound files are pretty much the same as the ebook, which is great for people who learn best via sound. Just copy the mp3 files to your Ipod or whatever, and listen! This is also great for people who have times when they are walking the dog or exercising and can listen then.

So why don't I agree with it? And why am I creating a lens about an ebook I disagree with?

I don't have the same belief system, but I still learned a lot.

Will you like it? This explains why you might.

There is a shift going on in the world of dog training. Some 20% of professional dog trainers and many owners are shifting over to clicker training and other positive-reinforcement methods.

The real shift comes when you talk about dominance. If a dog trainer or owner uses the way of thinking which has been, ahem, dominant for many years, they will emphasize that dogs are pack animals and that any dog who thinks it's the Alpha dog is not being well handled by its people.

It turns out that the positive methods I referred to kind of sidestep that. They are methods that work for all species, from dolphins to itty bitty things. You don't have to get into the question of dog dominance at all.

If you are comfortable with the usual dominance-based way of thinking about dogs, then I recommend this ebook package wholeheartedly.

If you're like me and not into that, you can still learn a lot but will need to kinda translate into your own way of thinking.

What do others say about Secrets of Dog Training?

A lot of people have really found it useful...

Here is just one quote from the "Secrets of Dog Training" website. There are many more there.

"I thought that I would let you know that your advice has worked brillitantly! We used technique 1 and we also went back to the basics outlined in your book, as well as employing tactics outlined in the Alpha dog (bonus book). I am pleased to say that I have regained control and authority and she now promptly obeys commands. What a difference it has made. Your book is brilliant and certainly worth every penny." -- Dave and Jan Hepden
