Sitting House - A Day In The Life of a House Sitter
Haven't managed to yet, but I think it works out just fine.
Once the cat is fed and my coffee is made, I grab my camera and head out on to the deck to capture the morning sunrise... What an unexpected pleasure of sitting house opportunities such as these are! Where we are currently sitting house has a garden that leads to a private beach on a lake. Across the other side of the lake is exactly where the sun comes up each day. The sun comes up just to the right of the island. At the moment, we are in winter, so there are blue sky sunrises and frosts, but we get a lovely sunny day to follow, so it is all good.
If you are curious about how we came to be siting house... read on!
Sitting House - How To Become A House Sitter
House Sitting is a Great Lifestyle!
The idea to look into house sitting and what it entailed came to us when we started to look at ways to fund or reduce costs in our 'retirement'.We have some pocket money additional income strategies going, but they weren't enough (yet) to pay the rent. The rent was eating up our savings too fast! We could see our 'retirement' lifestyle was, at some point, going to become unsustainable.
So, we started to think, how can we live rent free? And then it dawned on us...

The sign says "click to join" so I did!
And we haven't looked back since. We applied for three house sitting jobs, all three responded. One was on hold, one was filled and the last one we made the short list of twenty, and then a few days later the home owners contacted us and said we'd made the short list of three that they wanted to interview. Long story short, we got our first house sit confirmed, started packing and moved out of our rented house all in just a few exciting weeks.
Having never done this before, I was keen to join a company that provided support and service. I have been very impressed with this house sitting service and their website. (Part of their website allows house sitters and home owners to communicate privately with each other, which is great.) The information you need when you first start out is all here, they have made it so easy! We can see that we will be with this company for some time to come.

- Thank you BusinessSarah! It is a rewarding way to live - especially if you can love other people's pets and you enjoy a bit of gardening. And my husband made sure the houses were always cleaner inside and out before we left. One home owner wanted to know how he got the windows so clean!

- It's a great way to live, to experience a new location. It's also an inexpensive way to have a vacation! Especially if you are mainly there to feed a cat - you are free to explore the area! I highly recommend it as a mutually beneficial idea.

- I wrote about pet sitting on my SAD Disorder (Seasonal Affective Disorder) blog as a way of going south in the winter when I needed the sunshine the most. My experiences were wonderful.

- I think house sitting is a fabulous way to live sustainably. I did help house sit one summer early in my teaching career (for a professor on sabbatical). It was a lovely home that only required care for one dog and the yard. Easy and low budget. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks for sharing your experience and the opportunities that exist.

- Thank you for you comments, RenaissanceWoman2010! House sitting is an amazing lifestyle - we were amazed at how inexpensively we could live and we just loved the experiences we had. We especially loved having animals to care for! We look forward to returning to it in the future :)

- It sure is a great idea. I have suggested it to many people who will actually use it to have vacations in locations they want to visit - all over the world! House sitters can get to see the world and stay for free! Thanks for stopping by! :)

- I am just beginning the process but I have off a limited time this summer( '12 )for about 5 weeks. It would be in San Diego. Is that unreasonable to just do a short gig like that?

- Absolutely! Some house sits are just for the weekend, to take care of pets while the owners dash somewhere for a wedding and the like - both long and short stays are welcomed. When you are ready, just follow the link in the banners above and take a look! Let me know if you have any further questions, more than happy to help! :) Sharyn

- I love this concept, in fact I am currently house-sitting a small B&B in Spain, it's wonderful. You get to experience a new place, meet new friends, do good, and it cuts costs. Really, it's a win/win for everyone involved.
