Six Degrees of Separation

Some of you have seen the TV series, and others have seen the movie, but what does the six degrees of separation have to do with me? How will it help me in my business and in life? How will it make me any luckier? Some of you may even be wondering what the six degrees of separation are! In a nutshell, it means that everyone in the world is connected to each other within a matter of six degrees, or people.

Let me give you an example. A friend of mine moved to a small town of less than 1,000 people in the midwest from Orlando, FL. She opened up a little cafe' and boutique in the next town, because it was a little bigger.

Now, I live in a large suburb of Orlando and teach at a fairly large middle school of about 3,000 students. I decided to go visit my friend. At school, I was talking to my students about what we would be doing over vacation. I happened to mention that I was going to Wisconsin. One of my students exclaimed, I have family in Wisconsin! That was all there was to the discussion.

The next day, the student who said she had family in Wisconsin brought me in a note from her mother. I opened it and started to read...I know this is a long shot, but if you are going to be anywhere around central Wisconsin, I wanted to tell you about my mother's favorite place. She lives in this tiny little town, you've probably never heard of, but she loves going to the next town over for lunch. This town isn't much bigger, less than 10,000 people, but there is this really great coffee place that my mom took me the last time we visited. It's worth the drive, if you are anywhere in the area.

As I kept reading the letter, she described the lovely ambiance and unique atmosphere. Then she told me where this place was and the name of it. Yes, you guessed it... it was my friends cafe'!!! I was amazed and astounded! I really couldn't believe that she was telling me to go to this tiny little hole in the wall town that my friend moved to! Was this the six degrees of separation in action?

Well, I started thinking about life and how in the world could a student in my school of 3,000 kids, in a metropolis of more than 3 million people tell me to go visit the very small town my friend moved to! I mean, how many small towns are there in Wisconsin anyhow? There had to be hundreds, no- thousands of small towns across the state! This was totally unbelievable!

I would like to contend, that maybe there really isn't six degrees of separation! Maybe there is only three! I remember a book that I read many years ago, that described this very philosophy. It was called "How to Get Lucky". He talks about stacking the odds in your favor in life, love, and business, by understanding the mathematical formulas that explain small world philosophy.

For example, if you think about the people that you know- friends, acquaintances, and people you see everyday, like the mailman, the girl on the bus with blonde hair, the checkout girl at the grocery. Scientists estimate that you know about 300 people. Each of those 300 people also knows about 300 people. So, if you multiply these numbers, you find out that you actually have access to about 90,000 people! Do the math again, and you now have access to 8.1 billion people, which exceeds the world population!

How does this relate to success in your life and business??? By using the people you know to network with other high performance people! With the internet, the world just keeps getting smaller, which puts you in touch with the people you need to build up your success!
