30 Day Wardrobe Challenge
Six Items or Less
Could you do it? Which six would you choose?
I am updating this lens just before the beginning of another 30 day wardrobe challenge with Six Items or Less. It begins on November 15th, 2011 and will end on December 15th, 2011 (30 days later). My plan is to document my experience and share pictures, challenges, and insights.
My ultimate goal is to develop and refine my own signature style. This is the third time I will doing the Six items or Less challenge and I had such a wonderful experience last time (March of this year), that I'm really looking forward to doing it again. I met some great ladies and had some fabulous insights (some of which I will share below) as a result!
Create Your Own 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge
If the idea appeals to you and you are too late for this particular go-round, you can join in on the next one or start your own 30-day wardrobe challenge at any time. In fact, I put together a lens about how to do a 30 day wardrobe challenge that you can take a look at here.
A Six Items or Less Confession...
I'm only two days in and am thinking about CHEATING!! Yep, that's what I said. Because I have worn my "lightweight" sweater two days in a row in this sticky heat, and am not sure I can wear it even ONE MORE TIME! (see the latest link for explanation)
(I'm considering swapping out my green pullover for a yellow one!)

Which six would you choose?
More about choosing my six for Six Items or Less for the March challenge

What are the first things that come to mind as you consider participating in Six Items or Less, or any 30 day wardrobe challenge? Do you see favorite items you couldn't live without? Or maybe imagine boredom or frustration? You might even be wondering why anyone would want to do it in the first place!
The goal for Six Items or Less is to choose six items of clothing, not including outerwear, underwear, pajamas, loungewear, workout clothes or accessories, and wear only them for 30 days.
Why do it?
People choose this challenge for different reasons, some to create a uniform or a signature style. Others to move toward minimalism. Others to challenge their creativity. Etc.
I am doing two things, trying out a uniform, of sorts, and creating signature style using creativity with a limited wardrobe.
The six I've chosen...
Light blue cardigan
Light blue tank top
Brown lace cardigan
Grey tank top
Light brown pants
Dark brown pants
Here they are (well, half of them)...
How to Find Your Signature Style
Plus Size Style for this Fashionista :)
Since I discovered Dressing Your Truth, and seasonal color analysis, and have participated in these 30 day wardrobe challenges, I have learned a lot about what it means to create your own style. I have decided that defining personal style is comprised of four elements and must take them all into account...
(1) What is my Dressing Your Truth type?
There were many, many times that my inner rebel and I tried to compromise with something that I suspected was not my type when I ordered it and confirmed that when it arrived. Y'all, I am really stubborn! Hardheaded.
But looking back on the things I was unsure about, didn't love, or that didn't seem all that into me, either, I invariably found that something about the color, the fabric or the fit was not what is best for a type two, which is my type. (Since I wrote this in March, I have since found out that I am actually a warm autumn & a dressing your truth type three, so all that hardheaded rebellion makes more sense!)
(2) What do I really love?
During my last challenge, ending just before the start of this new round of Six Items or Less, there were some outfit combinations that I loved so much, I didn't want to take them off. I'd get all dressed up basically to try it on, because I had nowhere to go that day, and wouldn't want to take it off. Hours would go by before I finally was willing to give it back to my closet.
And then there were others that were okay, but I would be fine with not wearing them again. Why bother with them, if I can have love?
(3) What loves me back?
Being overweight, having a buddha belly and occasionally retaining water all give me a hard way to go at times when I'm trying to put together a wardrobe. Just like in life, sometimes you will be rejected for being overweight.
Thank goodness, however, there are clothes that will love you just the way you are! And those are the ones I'm keeping. Plus size style, here I come!!
(4) What expresses who I am inside?
My personal style is casual, soft, warm and natural. It's the gentleness of earth, and the cozy warmth of reading a book next to the fireplace with a cup of warm apple cider.
So the things I still have in my closet are things that to the best of my understanding at this time, fit all four of my criteria. They are warm autumn, type three clothes I love, that love me back and express who I really am.
Six Items or Less Blog Posts

In addition to posting summaries on my own Seasonal Color Analysis blog, I will be blogging about my experiences every day on my Six Items or Less blog and linking to them here. The first 15 posts or so are from the March 2011 challenge. The ones that follow are about the November challenge.
I also will post pictures of some of the outfits I create w/ Six Items or Less until I have posted all the possibilities (should be 8-10 pictures). After that, I'll only post a pic if I do something to change it up, like adding a scarf.
- A New "Six" in Town: COMING SOON!
- Could you limit yourself to wearing only six items of clothing? During SIOL, you choose six items of clothing to wear for 30 days and only wear those pieces in as many different combinations as you can dream up.
- SIoL Begins! A New 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge Starts Today
- Here's the thing: dressing your truth is a process! When I did Six Items or Less the last time, I picked at least two items of my six that were really not that into me. And over the month, my love for them grew cold as well. So my hope is that this time, the "magic ball" of my experience will say, "you have chosen wisely!" If each piece is a perfect match not only for a Dressing Your Truth type two, but also for my developing sense of signature style, then this month should feel pretty good.
- Day Two of the 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge
- One of the unexpected blessings I've experienced, so far, is getting to see the return of quite a few of the Sixers from the last cycle. It is wonderful to see them again and know I'll be sharing this cycle with them, too! It's not too late to join us, by the way. Even though the challenge began yesterday, they are still accepting registrations through Wednesday.
- Day Three: My Best 30 Day Wardrobe Challenge Yet! Third Time's the Charm?
- Grey skies are gonna clear up, baby! :) And this may turn out to be the very best 30-day wardrobe challenge yet! Why do I say that? Because in spite of the rain and the morning fogginess that made it really hard to get up, I am in love with my outfit!
- Planning Any Wobbles? The Case of the Disappearing Pants...
- "Wobble" is the Sixer term for cheating and it involves deciding deliberately to wear something not in your original six or being forced by circumstances to do so...
- Dressing My Truth: Week One of My 30 Day Wardrobe Challenge: A Few Minor Glitches
- It's not supposed to be cold! The last month or so of winter was unseasonably warm here, where I live, so I expected this cycle of Six Items or Less, the 30 day wardrobe challenge, to be warm, too. I picked tank tops and light cardigans, and was more worried about being too warm than cold. And then it got cold! Hopefully, though, it's warm for good now. This weekend has been in the 70s, so maybe no more cold days?
- Ballroom Dancing & the Uniform
- Have you ever gotten dressed at home, and felt good about what you were wearing, until you saw yourself in another mirror or in a glass reflection as you passed by outside? One place where I used to regularly experience that phenomenon was my son's ballroom dancing class. Inevitably, I'd wander into the bathroom at some point, check myself out in the mirror there and re-think the outfit I'd chosen. But yesterday, the first time I've been there since the wardrobe challenges began, that did not happen.
- Heading Toward the Two-Week Mark
- So far, there's no major love lost with my own six. In fact, I don't think about them nearly as much as I thought I would. What I am loving more, the more I think about it, is the confidence I feel about this six. I know that what I put on is going to look good. I don't have to worry or wonder. The uniform I picked is working for me. I feel really good about that part. Another thing I've noticed is that wearing this uniform makes me less interested in scarves. I know I could add them and maybe I will from time to time, but until today, I haven't felt like I wanted or needed them. During the last challenge, I reached for a scarf almost every day.
- Are You Enjoying Your Six?
- In some ways, I think of 30 day wardrobe challenges like this one as a road test for what we have in our closets. Do we love it? Does it love us back? Does it express who we really are? So in addition to asking ourselves if we can stick it out for 30 days or if we have a practical uniform that makes it easy to get dressed in the morning, I think it's important to ask how much we like what we're wearing. So now that we've hit the two-week mark (congratulations!), how are you feeling about your six? Do you enjoy wearing them? Do you like the way they look on you?
- My Quest to Find Signature Style w/ Six Items or Less...
- I love looking down at the soft browns, paired with the soft heather grey. I think this is my favorite of the eight outfits I've created with my six pieces! A close second is very similar: this same outfit but with my cloud tank instead of this grey one.
- Just Going to Focus on Six Items or Less
- ...this week, I got stressed out thinking ahead to when I will be just doing Project 333 (more on that tomorrow) and have decided to let that go until Six Items or Less is over. What I think I am going to do is join them for the remaining two months of it & for now, just enjoy SIOL. Because I am loving those outfits. I find myself wanting to take a picture even when I don't need one :).
- How to Nurture Your Style with Six Items or Less
- Also, consider your style personality and whether or not your current six reflects it. If not, maybe with accessories or creativity in how you put them together, you can create outfits that more closely reflect who you are. Here's a blog I found out about through one of our sixers (Jana). This post describes four style personalities...
- Our Final Week of this Six Items or Less 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge
- As Heidi mentioned, a lot of us have gotten bored with our six and some of us have gotten bored with our six and some of us have wobbled. Others have nearly quit in frustration. And yet, we have a week left to get through before it's all over. Well, I have an idea that might not just help us get through it, but might even make it fun! But it involves thinking about what you've worn for the past three weeks and doing some outfit planning for this next week...
- The Final Day of Six Items or Less
- Being a part of the Six Items or Less 30-day wardrobe challenge once again turned out to be about more than just clothes. The sense of community and connection I felt as I shared this journey with the other sixers, and the support and camaraderie we had was wonderful.
- Six Items or Less: The Next Day
- Hey, everybody! Welcome to your first day post-six. Did everyone bring pictures to share? I had a difficult time deciding what to wear today!
- Picking My Six for the November Challenge
- When I first saw the announcement that there was going to be a new Six, I was SO excited! This will be my third time participating and it has been wonderful every time. And I almost immediately thought of my first four picks! And just as quickly began to question them. So I ended up [...]
- Still Trying to Decide: Which Six?
- What I think I am sure of are the camel and brown pants, but even with them, I have begun to consider my brown leggings, instead. LOL! Here’s what may become part of my six… ETA: I think I am settling on the ones you see right now. Any thoughts? [...]
- Some Definites? (Not so Much)
- Still not completely sure, but I did do some refiguring and I may have 5 of my 6… And then, my brown pants, my camel pants and one more shirt. I am still deciding between my camel knit pants and my camel corduroy pants. But that’s five!
- Trying Out the Dress: One Definite!
- Since this morning was a little cooler than most have been this week, I decided to try out my new J. Jill russet dress to evaluate it as a possibility for my "six." I loved it! But I wasn't completely sure about the leggings. What do you think? Here's what I learned from my picture-taking
- Should It Stay or Should It Go NOW!?!
- Today, I wore my green sweater again, this time with my new dark brown corduroy pants. Oddly enough, they were extremely comfortable, but this lightweight sweater made me feel sticky and sweaty! The low for today was in the 60s, if that tells you anything...
- I Refuse to Get Dressed Today!
- And you can't make me! This whole weather, sticky-top thing is annoying the heck out of me. I read this book recently, Style Statement, where the goal is to create your own 2-word style phrase. Mine is natural comfort. So whatever I wear, it HAS to be comfortable...
- Goodbye, Green Sweater! (I'm Going Rogue)
- Yes, I have finally decided. My green sweater and I need to be apart for a while! Choosing it was a mistake I regret and I am fixing it by tossing it out of my six. And I think I am going to go renegade by replacing it. A whole new greenless six! Hope you guys [...]
- Days Are Getting Cooler!
- This first outfit is what I wore on what I thought would be a hot afternoon. I only had to walk to the mailbox, so I didn't bother with makeup and only threw on a pair of earrings for the picture. But it turned out to be cool outside. So my next outfit ...
- Oh, the Weather Outside Was Frightful! :)
- Hanging Out at My Mom's House: Today, my son and I went to my mom's house for lunch and had a second (or was it our third? Fourth?) Thanksgiving! Turkey and cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, broccoli au gratin, sweet tea to drink and sweet potato pie for dessert.
- Welcome to December!
- I was excited that it was the first day of December, with the cold weather I was hoping to have during this Six, so I threw on my red scarf (and red jewelry) with my outfit. It was fun to go run errands and feel like I was celebrating December at the same time .
- Today, It Was not so Mellow Yellow!
- Time for something different! Because I've been so in love with the cooler weather, I've been wearing my sweater dresses a lot, so today, I decided to wear my yellow again. But this time I added a red multi scarf. It was fun to wear it again.
- Getting Bored!
- Not much in the mood to write today so I'll just basically post the pic. I'm bored & ready for this to be over! Anyway, I like that the scarf worked this way because the last time I tried it, as a wrap, I didn't like it.
- I'm Over It!
- Though I am still sticking to my six, I am tired of Sixing, ready for it to be over, ready to go back to my other clothes and bored with this experience! I don't feel like taking or posting pics or even talking about how it's going. I think there are two reasons for this. [...]
- Only One More Day
- Here's how I'm feeling: I really, really, really miss my other clothes! That is all. In this picture above, I am about to head out and am wearing my new green sweater because it was cold enough for it. It was the most exciting thing about my outfit (to me) and it was outerwear. Still, it was [...]
- The Last Day
- It's not like it usually is at this time. I miss the excitement I usually feel on a "last day" like today. The other times, there were lots of "meaning of life," or at least meaning of personal style conversations toward the end, and insights were shared. And people made decisions about what they would do from now on in their closet...
The 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge in PICTURES! ...
I will post a picture of each outfit the first time I wear it, so you'll know which day I wore it on, but will not post repeats. However, If I do something different with a scarf or jewelry, I'll show you what I did.

Day Four of Six Items or Less: The November Challenge
Day What?
I have no idea which day it is in this challenge and stopped counting almost at the beginning! So any pictures from here on out will not have a "day" in their title (if they even have a title). I am enjoying the challenge but in a MUCH more relaxed and casual way than I did the previous two.
Outerwear added some interest...
My Final Six for Six Items or Less: The November-December Edition...
After a few changes here and there, my six pieces were...
a brown sweater dress
an orange sweater dress
a brown wrap pullover
a yellow pullover
camel pants
dark brown corduroys

- What a great idea. I've always found it interesting and fun to experiment with how little I need in order to be happy. This feels like a fun challenge, and it works so well with our perpetually-traveling-light lifestyle.
You sure worked your six items! I know I'm a Type 3 energy, and now you've inspired me to go further and actually learn more about Dressing Your Truth. Thanks for the inspo!
