6 Tips for Running Safely Outside
Running is generally not thought of as a dangerous activity. However, every year many people get hurt while running. Read these 6 safety tips for runners.
Avoid getting hurt while running
Runner unfortunately get hurt too often
What's better than going for a run or walk outside? Not much as far as I'm concerned. I love the gym and using my cardio equipment when necessary, but my favorite workouts are those I can do outside.
I'm aware there are dangers to running outside - especially running on busy streets. I certainly don't wish to be a running casualty, and so I practice six safe running practices.
1. Not wearing headphones when running in busy streets. I know music is a wonderful accompaniment, but if there is a lot of traffic, you simply are less aware of traffic. It's not illegal to wear headphones, but it is nevertheless a safety issue.
2. Become familiar with pedestrian rules. Obey traffic signals and use crosswalks. When you're running on roads with busy traffic, stay vigilant and never assume a motorist will avoid hitting you. Pedestrians get hit by vehicles all the time.
I prefer running on side streets and trails in order to minimize traffic issues.
3. It's trite to say these days, but if you're going for a long run in the sun, slather on some sun block. You burn fast and, although not immediately threatening, it can do you long-term harm.
4. I wear spectacles so I'm used to working out while wearing glasses. I've been tempted to run without glasses (and sunglasses when it's bright), but at the end of the day, if I don't wear my spectacles, I can't see as well and that increases the chance I'll trip or fail to see a vehicle I could have avoided.
5. When running at night, put something that reflects light
on your body - preferably on the front and back of you. The fact is, motorists simply don't see pedestrians in the dark.
6. Stay hydrated
. If you're doing any long-distance running, bring water with you. You can get dehydrated before you know it.
We run because it makes us feel good, is good for us, and keeps the weight off. Every year many runners sustain injuries - from mild to catastrophic - which is a terrible shame. The biggest running safety issue is traffic because the potential harm is so severe.
