What Is The Five Or Six Meals A Day Diet All About?

If you're here then you're probably wondering what all the news is about eating five or six meals a day.

After all, if you're like the majority of people who here about this diet revolution, you're here more because you're wondering what it's all about. Curiosity has reled you in, and you're most likely thinking right now "I have enough trouble losing weight eating just 3 times a day - how on earth am I going to shed pounds if I eat twice as often?!".

Fair question.

The fact, as you will find out  later on in this lens is that you don't double what you eat each day. You split a suitable daily food intake into a number of smaller meals - to each of your five or six meals you eat each day will be considerably smaller thatn what you are used to at the moment.

But there are some very reasonable biological reasons for this diet and in this page I am going to be taking you through how and why the six meals a day diet works, and giving you a sample of such a diet in the hope that you're willing to try it yourself.

I think that once you have, there'll be no going back.

Now onto the good stuff...

What Is So Great About The Six Meals A Day Diet?

The six meals a day diet is like a diet without the pain.

OK, so I'm exadurating, but it's one of the least painful ways I have found of losing weight.

Why is that?

Well, if you eat six meals a day it's hard to get hungry. It's also hard to feel like you want to snack on junk. You are eating every 2 to 3 hours while you're awake so you feel like you're always eating. You can actually feel like a pig and wish you could *stop* eating :-)

But in other words, munching on potato crisps, chocolate and so on are a thing of the past.

As is a feeling of starvation or depriving yourself.

The other thing is that eating this often speeds up your metabolism causing you to burn more calories no matter what you are doing.

So whether you're exercising or just sitting at your desk you will actually burn more energy so will lose weight faster and/or easier.

What could be better?

How Does The Six Meals A Day Diet Work?

No doubt you've heard of the GI diet unless you've been living under a rock.

The GI of a food helps to define how quickly your body can access and use the energy contained in a food after it is eaten.

In general, the lower the GI, the slower the release of energy. This slow release of energy means your body doesn't get "flushing" with calories 3 times a day but instead maintains a far more gentle release of energy after a meal.

The six meals a day diet takes it to the next level so you have many small meals of low GI foods for a constant trickle of energy.

By not flooding your body there are far less calories available at any one time so it is far less likely that any will get turned into fat.

Eating regularly also burns off energy because digesting food uses up calories in the body, so your metabolism speeds up and you burn off more energy at rest than someone who eats less regularly.

In addition, regular eating means that snacking is virtually eliminated as you will be eating again in a few hours.

Lastly these small meals mean you rareky feel over-full after a meal. You feel satisfied but not stuffed so are able to get straight on with your life after eating rather than having to sit around to digest your dinner for an hour :-)

What Foods Can You Eat On The Six Meals A Day Diet?

Within reason you can eat just about any foods on the six meals a day diet however you'll get the greatest results from a carefully controlled diet.

For best results limit yourself to "natural" rather than processed foods such as lean meat, fruits and vegetables. Low fat dairy products can be included together with a decent multivitamin preparation.

Remember not to eat too much at each meal and aim for low GI foods that will give off energy at a slow and stady rate. So choose brown bread instead of white. Choose water instead of cola. Choose cereal instead of cake and so on.

To be fair, it'll take a while to get used to the six meals a day diet. Some people find they barely have space for 6 meals (in which case you're eating too much at eash meal) and some people eat the same old rubbish they always have.

I suggest that before you start you put everything "bad" - prepared foods, cakes, biscuits, potato chips, chocolate spread and so on in one "naughty cupboard" that you only go in once a week.

The rest of the week you have to live on what *isn't* in that cupboard - fruit, vegetables, meat and so on.

I the hope of making life a little easier for you, here's a list of some of my personal favorite foods:

Sugar-free breakfast cereal
Chicken
Turkey
Skim milk
Fish
Vegetables
Salad
Low-fat ham
Fat free yogurt
Cottage cheese with pineapple

How Much Should You Eat On The Six Meals A Day Diet?

The six meals a day diet *isn't* about eating plenty more than you usually do. It doesn't mean taking what you normally eat per meal then multiplying it up by 6 to give you your total daily food intake.

The principle of the six meals a day diet is that you eat *less* at each sitting, but you eat more regular. Regular, small meals.

Here's the simple way to work out how much to eat...

Firstly, work out your ideal calorie intake per day.

You can do this scientifically using one of the many calculators available free online, or you can use approximate figures of around 1,800 kcals per day for men wanting to lose weight and 1,600 per day for women.

Then, you divide this figure by 5 or 6 meals a day and that gives you an idea of what you should be eating at each meal.

It doesn't have to be exactly that figure per meal - that would be physically impossible! But so long as it averages out and isn't more than 20% + or - that figure per meal you will be OK.

If you add up all the calories at the end of the day you should be pretty close to your ideal calorie intake.

Here are a few examples of the meals *I* include in my six meals a day diet:

- A bowl of cereal
- Ham and egg sandwich
- Small jacket potato and tuna
- Fat free yogurt
