Skateboarding is a Crime | The Hard Truth For Skateboarders

How many times have you seen the phrase "skateboarding is not a crime" printed on stickers, t-shirts and skateboards? "Skateboarding is not a crime" is definitely all in how you look at it; skateboarding actually is a crime in sectors of many cities, townships and towns. Yeah, yeah, I know they should outlaw playing catch with a football or baseball too if they're going to outlaw my sport of skateboarding, it's a losing argument for many reasons.

I have been skateboarding for over a decade now and have never been arrested (knocks on wood) not that I have not had my share of stern warnings and run ins. Skateboarding does not have to get you arrested and hassled, it's a sport like any other and is meant to be enjoyed.

Here we will go over being smart and respectful when skateboarding to save you that hassle of the handcuffs. Keep skateboarding while saving money for new skateboard stuff by avoiding tickets from the local bacon.

Skateboard at the Skateparks

Use Skateparks, Don't Abuse Them

Skateboarding Rules | Respect Them

I don't want to sound like an old man but I am in my late twenties so I guess there is no hiding it; when I was a little skateboarder coming up there was not a skatepark in my city. The closest skatepark was over an hour away and I was lucky to skateboard there once every two months. I'm not complaining, I got by, but it seems now a days skateboarders are not taking advantage of the rapid growth of skateparks popping up worldwide.

I understand how skateparks may not offer all the same obstacles you can go find in the city and how dare they require you to wear a helmet but guess what? You're ALLOWED to SKATEBOARD there! If you have a local skatepark it's a great way to stay out of trouble and meet other skateboarders in your area.

When I was in my mid teens a skatepark was finally constructed in my city. I spent pretty much every waking hour of my free time there which kept me a lot safer and out of trouble I would have definitely got into if I was left to skateboard on the streets.

If you do have a skatepark in your city, treat it well. I have been to several skateparks in my illustrious skateboarding ventures and have seen some really awful things. I have seen my favorite skateparks trashed with garbage, shut down by police for rowdy behavior in the park and seen blatant disrespect for the obstacles. I am not going to get into a rant and go into all the things I have seen disgraced at the skateparks I've been to but I will leave a list of things to consider.

Skatepark Basics

As a Skateboarder, Respect Skateboarding

Skatepark vandalized

  • Use the designated restrooms, you are not special.
  • Respect the rules of the park (No Smoking, pads, helmet, whatever they are)

  • Don't break into the park when they are closed

  • Don't fight with other skateboarders, aggressive skaters or bikers. Be passive, your line will still be there in a minute

  • Don't spray paint the obstacles, your art looks great (on your own property)

  • Do pick up after yourself (Don't upset Oscar the Grouch)

  • Let the skatepark staff know of any problems with obstacles

  • Be smart and respectful, your lucky to have a skatepark

Skateboarding in the Streets

Skateparks Closed | How to Stay Out of Trouble

skateboarding in the city

Am I a strict advocate of ONLY skateboarding in a skatepark, no way, I have skateboarded many street obstacles, parking lots and curbs. Sometimes the skatepark is closed or there is not a skatepark near you so the options are minimal. There are some things to definitely remember if you're taking it to the streets. You can actually get away with skateboarding in public if you keep your cool and follow a few guidelines.

Skateboarding in the Street

Tips, Tricks and Common Sense

Know Skateboarding

  • Don't argue with authority, it will get you nowhere quickly.

  • Ask permission, this has worked for me at churches and schools. People are surprised you asked and will usually say ok.

  • Don't think it's your right, rid yourself of that entitlement and take it for what it is.

  • Respect pedestrians

  • Don't litter

  • Be as quiet as possible

  • Look for no skateboarding signs

  • Walk your boards across intersections and in busy traffic

  • Know your local law and ordinances

Final Thoughts From a Skateboarder to Skateboarders

Give Skateboarding a Better Perception

Skateboarding Monks

As skateboarders we form the future perception of skateboarding every time we lace up our gnarly looking shoes and hit the park or street. If you've learned anything from my post I hope it's to be respectful as skateboarders. Skateboarders get lumped in together and judged as a group, if skateboarder A-546 spray paints a duck with a machine gun onto a city bench, EVERY skateboarder just spray painted that city bench. Be cool and let skateboarding fade away from the bad perception it's received over the years, let's make skateboarding non intrusive by not being idiots.

I skateboard

Yes, I skateboard

Mystery Black and White | Ryan Bobier

Just for fun i wanted to share one of my favorite skateboarding videos. Sure I could have added videos of skateboarders being menaces to society or getting hassled by the police but to be honest those videos just bum me out. Check out the video below and let it inspire you to be a more respectful grown up skateboarder.

Skateboarder?

Let me know what you think

I can handle critics and skeptics but I love followers and fellow respectful skateboarders. Let me know what you think, whether you're with me or against me I would love to know.

I know I'm an old Gramma and all,Lol.... But, my Grandson loves skateboarding. I think it is dangerous but he love it and it keeps him busy and out of trouble. He tells me all the time how "cool" it is and likes showing me the stunts he can do. I always cringe and try not to constantly say "Be careful, don't hurt yourself". Nice Lens by the way.

Sounds like you worry about him but ultimately he has your support and that's the important thing. Skateboarding has its risks but all the good things outweigh the bad when he's staying out of trouble, making friends and having fun. Thanks for the comment and thanks for supporting skateboarding!

I've never gotten a ticket for skating but I know some people who have. Just give 'em the good ol' "Yes Sir, No Sir" routine and get out of there.

Awesome lens! Don't argue with the authority is always a good rule to abide by. "I fought the law and the law won" is not just a clever lyric.
  • skateANDcreate May 5, 2011 @ 12:23 pm | delete
The lyric could read "I fought the law and the law elbowed me in the back while sweeping my legs out from under me" Silly authority fighters, you'll never win!

Just stay off my lawn, young hooligan!! Nice lens
  • skateANDcreate May 5, 2011 @ 12:18 pm | delete
As long as your lawn does not have a sweet slip and slide I will stay off.

Nice lens! and for those of you who say "eh I can handle a little skateboarding ticket", I got one 6 years ago and it was $100 then. I'm sure it's even worse now.
  • skateANDcreate May 4, 2011 @ 9:21 am | delete
$100 is enough to make me not want one! Sounds like you've learned your lesson. A lot of skaters don't realize just how easy it is to get a ticket just for skateboarding and sometimes I've heard they even take your skateboard away. My skateboard is like my child and I would be heartbroken if the fuzz took it.
