The Culture of Skateboarding
Getting over the BS
Welcome to my skate site! I'm stoked you've stopped by. Here is what I hope will be the dawn of a killer blog dedicated to skate culture. Im going to begin with a few of my opinions of how skating has had a bad rap in the press and media over the years and help get rid, hopefully, of some of these opinions.Skateboarding is a pratice which has been going since the early 1970's but it is amazing how much poor information about it still goes around. It's time to destroy some of those skate myths forever. In numerous cases it is opinion or it is something that people have been told a number of times that they take it to be the truth.
The number 1 myth is that only teenagers take joy in skateboarding. While they might represent a big percent of the individuals involved in it, little children and even adults take part in ittoo. Bear in mind that many of the world's best professionals are in their mid 20's to early 30's and they have no plans to leave the sport any time soon!
A skate myth that is finally slowing down some is that it is only for guys. While lots of them are, more and more girls are taking part in it. They don't mind what society says about it and they love the sport. The fact that there are some girl skaters taking part in the serious competitions out there also provides them with some great role models too.
The idea about this is that individuals getting into in skateboarding have no goals in life. They are often typecast as people with a lust to live on the edge and to create problems. But, if you get to know lots of skaters you will find out they have awesome goals and ambitions. Lots of skaters get excellent grades too and they even take part in community events.
They don't see any real importence for them due to small numbers of people taking part in it. The fact is that lots more people would take part in it if such skating parks were in place. It isn't weird for skateboarders to travel 30 or so miles if they need to in order to find a great park.
Skate culture doesn't get the recognition that it deserves for people to really take notice of that. The skater clothing industry has been growing for many years now and it's not uncommon to find anything from skate hoodies to skate hats in your local mall or stores.
