Technical specifications and year-by-year updates are included, along with 135 photos.
Ski Doo Snowmobiles
BRP has manufacturing facilities in five countries; Canada, U.S., Mexico, Finland and Austria. More than 80 countries sell the company's products. BRP has been very innovative and holds the brands Ski-Doo, Can-Am, Sea Doo and Outboard motors. The Canadians have high respect for the Ski-Doo personal snowmobiles since in 2007 it was listed in 17th place on CBC's The Greatest Canadian Invention. His snowplane designs were traced to before 1920. He abandoned his efforts to develop a snowplane and concentrated on developing tracked vehicles like the truck-sized half-track with skis in the front and caterpillar tracks in the rear. These vehicles were used for the worst winter weather conditions in the flat Canadian countryside. They produced half-tracks for the Canadian Army during WWII. The muskeg tractor was then produced with a new track system which was an all-tracked heavy duty vehicle designed for extreme wilderness condition where there was heavy snow or semi-liquid muskeg (swamp) (logging and mining operations). It was produced under the name muskeg tractor. Each track is composed of 2 or more rubber belts joined into a loop. Two-belt tracks were used on early model Bombardiers as well as the muskeg(swamp) machines. Later they produced a smaller continuous rubber track for the light one or two person snowmobile. This led to the invention of the snowmobiles that we now have. The company held its own in 1960 after international competitors entered the market.
From 1940 to1970 Bombardier built the snow cat. The B12 seated 12 people and the C18 seated 18 people. These were considered fast with speeds over 30 MPH. The B12 and C18 were precursors to the more modern snow coach used for transporting tourists at various resorts and also used for school buses, mail delivery and emergency vehicles. By the 1960's, the B12/C18 became obsolete due to competition and the fact that the highways used more modern snowplowing devices. The snow trac was produced practically unchanged until 1981 and was used globally for exploration and commercial purposes as well as at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan.
By the end of 1950 smaller and more efficient engines had been developed. Bombardier then concentrated on developing a small miniature snowmobile that would be lightweight. In 1959, his first snowmobile went on sale. The Ski-Doo was originally intended to be named Ski-Dog (to replace the dog sled), but the painter misinterpreted the name and painted Ski-Doo on the first prototype. Bombardier sold 225 Ski-Doos the first year and then four years later 8,210 were sold. These snowmobiles were exceptionally good in quality and performance, which earned a better reputation than the Polaris and Arctic Cat brands of motosleds. In 1971 Bombardier purchased the Moto-Ski Company to expand the Ski-Doo line and to eliminate his competitor.
Ski-Doo comes in models Formula III, Mach I and Mach Z with Rotax engines. The Formula III, Mach l and Mach Z are powered by reed-valved Rotax engines because of the three cylinder engine layout.
In 1994 the Ski-Doo Summit was produced specifically for mountain riding. The Ski-Doo snowmobiles have been consistently competitive in the marketplace even up to the present time. They have taken a number of national titles in racing events.
The Ski-Doo ZX was introduced in 1999 with aluminum chassis, which was lighter weight with better suspension, making it very successful in Sno-Cross competition. Ski-Doo was introduced with rider-forward REV chassis in 2003, which was followed by other manufacturers. In 2008 the XP chassis was introduced which moved the rider further forward with major weight reduction. The XP was the lightest machine available, under 3 lbs per HP.
