Ski Size for Kids - Speed vs. Control

What Size Twin Tip Skis Should I Get For My Kids?

Are you confused when you look at ski charts by the large range of acceptable ski size which is appropriate for your child's height? Actually, there is a very simple method for determining the optimal ski size for children. First off you need to decide the basic use for your child's skis. Does you child just ski around the mountain and have fun - or are they ready to advance to park and pipe? If it is tricks and jumps that call to your child, then twin tips may be the way to go.

Simply defined, twin tips have the upturned front edge of a traditional ski, on both the back and the front side. They also are often made to be somewhat more flexible, allowing your little ripper to ski in either direction, a necessary skill when learning and completing many park and pipe tricks.

Next you need to determine your child's ability level. Are they a beginner in need of maximum control? Or, is your child a more advanced and controlled skier, ready for maximum speed. The girl in the photo is wearing twin tip skis, and is currently just outside of a halfpipe. . She is a three times New Zealand national champion for her age category, and therefore ready for these longer twin tips. You can read about her at Sarah Albom.

Below you will find some simple guidelines for determining the best twin tip ski size for your child. I have also included a selection of child's twin tip skis.

How to Determine Twin Tip Ski Size

Measure your height from floor to your nose in centimeters
The number of centimeters equals your recommended ski size.

When Measuring Skis, They Should be Held Parallel to the Body

(Not like in this photo, where they are on an angle, and therefore measure shorter than they are.

Selecting the Proper Ski Size for Your Child

Getting Your Child's Twin Tip Size Right is Easy with These Simple Guidelines

Choose Slightly Longer Skis:

  • If you are more advanced

  • If speed is your number one goal

  • For all mountain freestyle and big air

  • When looking for more "pop" going into jumps

  • If you are heavy for your height

Choose Slightly Shorter Skis:

  • If you are a beginner, learner or just want extra control

  • If you want faster, sharper turns

  • To focus on short jumps, rails, boxes and wall slides in the park

Do You Prefer Longer or Shorter?

Slightly longer (I like to go fast)

Sally Star says:

I am totally NOT a beginner.

SamNos says:

It all depends what you fell like skiing!

skier_chick says:

I typically use longer skis for my all-mountain skiing. However, I opted to go with a little bit shorter pair for my park twin tips because the shorter lighter skis are easier to spin. The most important thing to consider for twin tips is, since the tail is turned up too they are going to seem shorter than traditional skis of the same length. Therefore, the ski shop I work for typically sizes twin tip skis a little longer than traditional skis.

Matt says:

Faster the better

Slightly shorter (I like more control)

hasab says:

Sarah Price says:

shorter

tssfacts says:

I haven't actually had skis on or gone skiing. But if I was I would want control.

DecoratingforEvents says:

I have never skied, but I think if I did control would be my main focus! LOL

Pukeko says:

I am not a good skier so I need maximum control.

These are really pretty skis. Sadly, I have only skied on water, never on snow. When I was younger, I always thought I would learn someday. Now, I just look at the pretty snow skis and wish :) I do know how important it is to properly access your true ability, your experience level and you size/height/weight before you purchase skis whether for water or snow.
