SK-II products are based on an ingredient called Pitera, nutrient-rich liquid that is extracted during the yeast fermentation process.
Accoring to the legend, Pitera was first discovered by a scientist who noticed that sake brewers had very soft youthful looking skin on their hands irrespectfully of their age. It appeared that this effect is achieved due to "nutrient-rich liquid" occuring during sake brewing.
SK-II stands for "Secret Key To Crystal Clear Skin" and it is pronounced "ess-kay-too".
