Introduction
Italy gave the world famous skiers like Alberto Tomba or Deborach Compagnoni. There are many of modern ski lifts and slopes, new bus and train connection especially prepared for
skiers, hotels mantain good standards, and the Italian food and wine don't need recommendation.
Among many high quality ski resorts the most popular are the Dolomites and the Alpine peaks in Valle d'Aosta.
There are two groups of Dolomites, around the first, there is big ski carousel Dolomiti Superski which includes 12 ski areas of total run length more than 1200 km.
The most posh one is Cortina d'Ampezzo often starring in Bond movies, then Arabba near the highest Dolomite peak Marmolada. Arabba is also linked to famous Sella Ronda resorts, one of them is Val Gardena.
In Dolomites is also located Val di Fiemme with modern Ski Centre Latemar.
The smaller group Dolomiti di Brenta features another posh resort, once visited by Austrian Emperors - Madonna di Campiglio.
Dolomiti di Brenta make one big skiarea altogether with Adamello Glacier perfect for alpine skiing and walking. Near Adamello there is another glacier Presena, just above Passo Tonale.
There are many of picturesque ski resorts in Valtellina, the most popular here is Bormio, which also features the hot spring termes from Roman times.
The highest Alps are in Valle d'Aosta, perfect for both downhill and off-piste skiing, with quite popular here heliski.
Courmayeur ski resort is situated in the shade of Mount Blanc, Cervinia near Matterhorn and Swiss Zermatt area, and the biggest ski area Monterosa Ski exceeds 4000 m above sea level.
I didn't mention other popular ski resorts like Passo Stelvio and Val Senales good for summer skiing, Abetone in Appenines, Tarvisio and Sella Nevea... and many more.

Cortina d'Ampezzo
Queen of Dolomites
The most well-known Italian ski resort Cortina d'Ampezzo still is liked by rich and famous, but it is harder to spot them walking in the public places, as their social life switched to closed parties, and friends meetings in closed private properties.
The development of small alpine village into the most popular and worldwide known Italian ski resort Cortina (1224 m) started some 160 years ago with tourists who choose Cortina as a starting point for alpine walks into the magnificent peaks of Dolomites. The resort modeled after St.Moritz in Switzerland open the slopes for quite a number skiers at the beginning of the 20th century.
In 1956 Cortina hosted Winter Olympics, and since that time many regular FIS downhill competitions, cross-country marathons, and some exotic ones like Winter Polo on Snow.
Numerous pictures were made here, most noticeable James Bond movies with Lazenby, and Roger Moore, who quite often goes back to Cortina.
Madonna di Campiglio
A pearl of Dolomites
As there is only one queen, Madonna di Campiglio has to stop on the title 'the pearl'.
It is located in separated part of Dolomites called 'Gruppo di Brenta' and it is incorporated in Skirama ski area with neighbouring villages and Passo Tonale which features Presena Glacier.
Among the visitors in Madonna stayed Princess Sissi and the Emperor Franz Josef,
and recently Michael Schumacher.

It is hard to imagine a better location in the Dolomites.The highest mountain in Dolomites with possibility to ski on Marmolada glacier on one side of Arabba, and on the other side link to famous Sella Ronda ( a chain of ski lifts and slopes around Sella mountain range ) which is connected to other ski regions: Alta Badia, Val Gardena and Val di Fassa.
Also half an hour drive from Arabba there is THE ski resort Cortina. Snow and sun conditions - perfect, like in the other parts of Dolomites.

- I was on the top Tofana peak in Cortina d'Ampezzo at 3500m altitude, beautiful Dolomites mountains panorama. I'd love to go back, but the ski resort is really expensive, for VIP only.
