Skin care products

Most acne skin care products can be broken down into three main areas:
  • Internet or Drugstore: Treatment to help relieve the condition
  • Those that help prevent the condition
  • Specialised, prescription acne products

Preventative or general acne products form a large section of the skin care market Products like skin cleansers and toners fall into this category. In the real sense, these products are just those that should be part of your daily routine, in many instances the user has never had a skin condition to worry about.

More specialised cleaners are designed in the same way as acne skin care products, i.e. they clean out the pores to help stop sebum or oil which can clog these areas. Excess oil needs to be stopped from clogging the skins pores as this oil make it easier for bacteria to grow, exacerbating the condition.

Skin peels and exfoliation

General skin care treatments also include special exfoliation products like skin peels, there's now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. This type of peel helps reduce the chance of oil clogging up the pores as well as removing other skin impurities, this can reduce the bacterium growth on your skin.

There is a huge market for these types of acne skin care products as they don't require a consultation with a dermatologist. Most of these creams are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne), these include creams, cleansers and peels that slow down the formation of acne.

Test to see what skin care product is best for you

Usually it is best to start using creams with only a small amount of benzoyl peroxide (less than 5.5 percent is recommended). First test to see how the skin reacts, a safer alternative to benzoyl peroxide is anything containing alpha hydroxy acid.

As with any type of zit cream, you may need to try a few acne skin care products until you find one that will suit your skin. However, if nothing you try seems to work, you should contact a dermatologist.

Prescription treatments are prescribed by a dermatologist and can include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical ointment.

Skin care specialists

In more serious cases your skin care specialist may decide that a small surgical procedure can be used to remove the oil and infection from your pores. Specialists never recommend the sufferer tries this themselves as it can cause permanent skin damage.

Another effective course of skin care treatment is hormone therapy. Hormonal changes are known to cause acne and such skin care treatments are often effective. The end result in dealing with acne is not the problem it once was, there are now a huge range of products specifically formulated for the task.
