SKIN ACNE

The number of people suffering from skin acne is astronomical. It is believed that nearly all young adults starting in their early teens to late teenage years suffer from some form of skin acne including; whiteheads, blackheads, pimples or zits.  Both boys and girls are affected by this disease regardless of their skin color or background.

In the early stages, skin acne is preventable by the use of conventional over the counter acne treatments without much effort or having to worry about scarring. However if acne is left untreated and reaches the stage where is classified as severe acne, prescription medications or dermatologist intervention may be required to cure acne. Unfortunately many people do not treat skin acne when it first appears, hoping that it will "go away on its own". As a result, more than 40% of the cases relating to adolescent acne result in severe acne.

Of course, the opposite of the pervious statement regarding skin acne is also true, in 60% of the cases it does go away on its own. One of the most common myths surrounding acne was that it affected only teens, however, this is simply not true. It seems that just as many adults into their twenties, thirties and in some cases even later are suffering from acne. In some cases, although rare, people have been known to develop acne for the first time as adults, without ever having skin acne as teens.

The formation of skin acne lesions seems to be distributed to all body parts. However the back, shoulders, neck and the face seem to bear the brunt of the acne breakouts. The acne on the back tends to be more severe and more frequent due to the large number and size of skin pores on the back due to its sheer size or surface area.

Skin acne tends to affect both boys and girls; however it is often much more sever in men than women due to higher amounts of testosterone production in men. Testosterone is responsible for the production of oil when clogs the sebaceous glands and results in the formation of pimples or zits. Acne in women tends to be less severe, but more frequent; this is due to the rise and fall of hormone levels during their menstrual cycle.

Skin acne is not new; it has been around as long as people. And as such, over the years there several myths have developed regarding this common skin disease, including the following:

Acne Myths:

Acne is caused by poor hygiene -Although it is true that the skin must be kept clean, poor hygiene is not the direct cause for pimples.

Another skin acne myth is that masturbation causes acne. There is no scientific basis for this statement. Some believe that it was started way back by people with strong religious beliefs to deter young men from pleasuring themselves.

These are not the only two acne myths around, there are many such claims without any kind of scientific validation. If someone tells you one of these myths and it does not make common sense, try to validate the claim.
