Skinks are Shiny Little Lizards that Can Move Fast! Well, at Least Some of Them Can!

When I lived in New Mexico, I frequently chased lizards around in the desert while supposedly on my way to school and back. Sometimes these lizards were skinks. At the time, I didn't really know my lizards well--except for Gila monsters, horned lizards (aka "horny toads"), and all the other lizards that didn't meet the previous criteria (of which many were probably skinks of some sort).

When my family moved my sister and me to western Pacific island of Guam, I got more of a dose of lizards. There wasn't much variety in different species, but they made up for it in sheer numbers. Lots of 'em. A different variety of lizards, but lizards just the same. Not only did we have humongously big lizards like the cousins of the Komodo Dragons--the local monitor lizards--but we also had the "wall climbers"--the anoles and geckos--in addition to the skinks.

This Squidoo lens will give you some of my impressions of this interesting critter.

Skinks.... Shiny, Usually Perky, Bright-Looking Lizards

type=text

When I was in New Mexico chasing lizards in the desert, I occasionally would see these streaks of black, gold, and blue scurrying from creosote bush to mesquite bush. These were the blue-tailed, 5-striped skinks --the juveniles, I've been told. The adults, seemingly, are just shiny brown and a little more chunky.... fatter (but still sleek).

Then, when we moved to Guam, I'd frequently see these same kind of critters all over the jungle floor when I was out in the boonies. I even heard and saw these lizards around our house. The lizards would scamper around scrounging for insect goodies in the fallen leaves around the bases of trees. In the dry leaves, they'd make a rustling noise that you'd be able to hear from even inside the house.

When sitting out in the boonies, I'd hear them all about me--most of the time I wouldn't be able to see them, but if I got lucky, I might get a quick picture of one.

I also saw these lizards in the boonies of the Northern Marianas Islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

When I managed to get a trip to the Republic of Balau,I saw a different member of the skink family--in Palau, it's called the "amaideh'dui". The Palauan amaideh'dui is a skink that's about a foot long (maybe twice as long as the blue-tailed skinks) and it's shiny and bright, fluorescent green. This lizard also likes to climb trees--not with the sticky paws that geckos and anoles have--but with sharp claws. I tried to get pictures of these guys, but they move way too fast.
