Different names, same thing: Skips / Bins / Dumpsters

Skip bins, dumpsters, hook bins and front loaders, these are the common names of containers that you can rent or hire to dispose of all you rubbish and waste needs.

Skip Bin and Rubbish Dumpster Hire

The basic builders' skip that you see at construction sites and on the back of waste skip trucks is 8 cubic yards. This refers to the volume of waste that the skip can hold. A skip this size can hold up to around 10 tons of rubble, depending on the supplier of the waste skip and their rubbish weight specifications.

Skip Hire Charges

Different skip bin hire firms, in different cities, have different bases for their charges. Some refuse bin suppliers charge per week or day, others just for each load of waste material taken away. Some charge by ton of rubbish in the skip bin. Obviously, you need to ask about the company's charging and bin hire structure when you are booking a bin and work out which package is going to suit your needs the best, this will depend on how long you will need the skip, and how heavy the waste is that you are going to be placing in the skip bin.

Skip Sizes

Skips come in a range of sizes and shapes; from 2 cubic yard mini skips to 30 cubic yard roll on-roll off hook bins suitable for large amounts of garbage and waste from commercial or residential premises. Even the most simple of building jobs produces an amazing amount of waste. If your waste and rubbish material can be saved from the skip bin for recycling, then you can save money by getting a smaller cubic yard bin.

Skip Delivery

All skip bins and waste skips are delivered by skip trucks. If you cannot accommodate the skip bin on your drive or property, you will need to provide lights and may need planning permission to leave the skip on the road. The skip hire company will normally provide you with the legal minimum lights you need, and be able to organize any permits you may need to put the waste skip on public property.

Some companies have drop-front or skip bins with doors, perfect if you are hoping to wheelbarrow your waste directly into your skip bin. These skips are in heavy demand, particularly in summer, so book ahead.

Overloading Bins

Do not overload roll off containers or skip bins. The maximum fill line cannot exceed the top of the bin. Bin suppliers are not allowed to carry unsafe skips. So ensure that the skip bin is loaded correctly, and not filled above the top edge of the bin.
Do not put toxic, hazardous, or flammable, material in any skip bin or roll off container without contacting the skip supplier first. There may be additional charges for some material, and others have to be disposed of correctly.
