When your dog is sprayed by a skunk, there are a couple of things that you should do immediately.  I know you think it is to get rid of the smell, right?  The smell is awful!  Believe it or not, that is not the first thing you should be worried about. 

When you are dealing with a skunk sprayed dog, you first need to check the dog for bites or cuts.  Although not every skunk carries rabies, they are known rabies carriers.  If your dog is bitten or scratched, you will need to notify your vet immediately. 

At the same time that you are checking for cuts or bites, you will need to check to see where your dog has been sprayed.  If he has been sprayed in the face, you will need to contact your vet.   A dog sprayed in the eyes and/or mouth can get very sick. 

A dog sprayed in the eyes can experience temporary blindness and disorientation. 

A dog sprayed in the mouth can experience nausea, vomitting, and diarrhea.  However, if he has ingested the spray and is not seen and treated by the vet, he can get very sick and may even develop kidney problems or anemia.  Be sure to see the vet.
