Skyjacker Shocks Review - Answers to Common Questions
For over 30 years Skyjacker has been manufacturing quality suspension lift kit components to fit the needs of off-roaders. Through the evolution of the company, Skyjacker has added more products to its line in order to provide customers with the best suspension solutions available. One area that has grown considerably is the number and types of truck shocks that are now available from Skyjacker.
Skyjacker offers multiple shocks for hundreds of applications. The line of Skyjacker shocks includes the Hydro 7000 series, Nitro 8000 series, the new Big Gas shocks, and the platinum series coil over shocks. With so many options, it can be tough to figure out which shock is right for your application.
Q: What is the difference between the Hydro 7000 series, and the Nitro 8000 series of shocks?
A: The simple answer is Nitrogen. But the simple answer isn't as simple as it seems. The Hydro 7000 shock is an oil dampened shock built for the rigors of occasional off road use. As the piston moves up and down in the cylinder, the oil that is used to control piston movement is passed through the piston. Each time the piston cycles, small bubbles form in the oil. During highway driving this isn't noticeable, but under repeated long cycling that happens when you're on the trail, the oil can become frothy and the shock loses its dampening ability.
This is where the Nitro 8000 comes into play. As the name implies, the Nitro 8000 is filled with nitrogen. The shock tube is pressurized with Nitrogen to 150psi. The nitrogen displaces any air that was in the shock tube. The result is greatly reduced foaming of the shock oil during hard use.
In addition to the use of nitrogen, the Nitro 8000 also employs speed sensitive valving. The size of the holes in the piston that allow the oil to flow through dynamically change based upon load.
Q: Is there a better shock available in the Skyjacker shocks lineup?
A: The Skyjacker Big Gas shock is an upgrade over the Nitro 8000. The Big Gas shock is a single tube shock that allows the shock oil to run a little cooler which helps maintain consistent dampening. In addition to the single tube design, the Big Gas also uses a 10 disc shim stack like those found in many tunable dampeners. An added bonus is that the Big Gas shocks can be mounted shaft or tube up to increase fitment possibilities.
Q: I'm looking for a set of coilovers for a custom project; does Skyjacker offer anything that could work?
A: The line of Skyjacker suspension lift kit shocks includes the Platinum Series coil over shocks. Contact Skyjacker for fitment options.
