Welcome to the Slacker At Work lens. I'm Brendon Connelly and I'll be your gracious host. For background's sake, I keep a blog called Slacker Manager and I also wrote a manifesto called Slacker@Work.

The intent of this page is to provide an easy way to get more of my thinking on the subject of the Slacker At Work, and also to point to additional helpful resources about management, leadership, productivity and the working life. All with that inimitable slacker slant, of course.

What's a slacker slant? Glad you asked. The slacker slant is the way the 'Slacker At Work' looks at the world. It presumes that in our essence, we're all slackers. That is, we all tend to try to increase the things that we enjoy and minimize the things we dislike. Along the way, the effective Slacker At Work will try to figure out tips, tricks and hacks that make work easier and more efficient. That's pretty much it. This lens will point you toward resources that help along the journey.

Posts that represent the essence of the Slacker At Work

The 100 Day Plan
This is a great way to differentiate yourself in a job interview. It also helps you turn your focus to researching the job and company a little deeper.

The post contains links to templates that you can use when creating your own plan. Create the plan and distribute it during your interview. This is impressive to interviewers, and has the added benefit of allowing you to control the conversation, at least for a little while.
Appending a scratch file
This is the third and final post in a series that evolved quickly with reader participation on how to append text to a scratch file.

This posts points to three ways to do it: with ActiveWords, with AutoHotKey (free), or with Windows scripting.

The beauty of quickly appending to a scratch file is that you can make it hold notes without leaving the application you're in. Just dump out the contents of the scratch file on a regular (daily) basis.
5 minute shoeshine
This post outlines my shoeshine strategy. I like a shiny shoe, but I don't like spending a lot of time at it. Using a few specific ingredients, I don't have to. Be sure not to miss the great additional commentary on Metafilter.
The Unspoken Language of the Office
Everything you ever wanted to know about using body language to get someone out of your office/cubicle. And then some.

This is a great framework for working through difficult decisions.

The sweet spot of delegation
My outlook on delegation, from both a manager's point of view, as wells as an employee's point of view. Quick tip: delegation is an offer, not a requirement; you can turn it down.

This is a popular series of posts I wrote a while back. I've been refining it ever since, and have a regular presentation on the same topic.

Every self-respecting slacker needs to know how to manage the boss. Managing the boss isn't tough and there really isn't much that's actually secret. Read on...
