Sleep - Insomnia And How To Get A Good Nights Sleep
Sleep-insomnia and how to get a good nights sleep!
Do you suffer from insomnia of any kind, including chronic insomnia? Does the picture on the left remind you of the person you look at in the mirror every morning.
If you answered yes to any of the above questions then this lens is for you. Insomnia affects millions of people all over the world, many suffer in silence not knowing that there are ways of effectively dealing with insomnia that don't required you to be drugged up to the eyeballs all night. The problem with going to a general Doctor about insomnia is that sleeping disorders is not their specialist subject hence the advice you get from them will be very general and will many times involved you being offered some sort of prescription drug.
This is not necessarily a good thing because these drugs can be highly addictive, so you might find yourself being able to sleep better, but you might also find yourself being addicted to taking these in higher and higher doses for the rest of your life.
Here Are 4 Tips to Help You Get To sleep More Easily
1) Try following a bedtime routine:Doing a regular pattern of activities such as walking at a relaxed
Pace - helps many people, listening to soft music, brushing the teeth, washing the face, and setting the alarm clock can all set the mood for sleep.
This routine should be followed every night, at home or away.
2)Make the environment conducive to sleep:
The bedroom should be kept dark and quiet and not too warm or too
cold. If noises disturb sleep, wearing ear plugs, using a
white-noise machine or a fan, or installing heavy curtains in the
bedroom (to block out outside noises) may help.
3)Use the bedroom primarily for sleeping:
Don't use it to watch TV or as your study or office.
4)Avoid substances that interfere with sleep:
Food and beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine (such as
coffee, tea, cola drinks, and chocolate) can interfere with sleep,
as can appetite suppressants and diuretics.
These substances should not be consumed, especially near bedtime.
Quitting smoking may help. Drinking a large amount of alcohol in the
evening causes early morning awakenings.

Dear Dr.Samantha,
I have suffering inability fall asleep around 5 years ago. I was worries to go to my bed even close to my bed. Tossing and turning around on my bed was one of my bed activity before sleep. I'd take three to four hours to knock myself off in sleep.
Thanks for your help. I can sleep whenever I feel tired and no more bed activity like previous tossing and turning around now.

More Tips To Help You Beat Insomnia
Tip 1Check to See if there is a route cause of your insomnia. There could be some physical or psychological reason for it, such as stress or anxiety. This is especially the case if your insomnia is a new occurrence in your life. go and see a Doctor and get some advice. (however be very wary if the just prescribe a bunch of drugs to you)
Tip 2
Listen, to music. I don't mean the latest heavy metal, rock or hip hop beats played loudly while you dance around the room. Just before bedtime! Listen to some soft soothing music. (an additional tip here is to make sure that if you are listening to a cassette or CD, makes sure that it will automatically turn itself off, you don't want to have to get up to turn it off, that defeats the object and you mind will psychologically know that you will have to do this so will put up a barrier to you getting to sleep
Tip 3
Drink the right think before going to bed. Some people swear by a glass of warm milk about 15-20 minutes before they go to bed as it is said that because of the calcium in milk it can soothe the nervous system, because calcium can work on your tense nerves to help you relax. If you don't like milk or like many people today, are avoiding diary products then herbal tea can be a fantastic alternative. Many health stores can even recommend the right types of herbal tea that will help you to relax and get to sleep.
Tip 4
Take a nice warm bath. Try using bath salts and Epsom salts to help relax you. It is important not to stay to long in the bath as long baths can drain you. You are purely having a bath to try and relax not to stay in their so long that you come out looking like a wrinkled prune - that is not the goal.

This is the million dollar question and although the common assumption is eight hours, the truth is that there is know set amount. The amount of sleep we need varies from person to person. Some people can survive quite happily and healthily on about 5 1/2 hours while others need 9 1/2 hours.
There are many factors that determine how much sleep you need a few of them are as follows:
- Your inherited genetic need
- The quality of your sleep
- The daily things that you do that can affect your sleep such as drinking, smoking, how much coffee you drink and how much exercise you get.
Does the temperature of your bedroom matter
There is a dip in your body temperature when you sleep so it is normally better to be in a slightly cooler environment as this matches the dip better. Any extremes of temperature whether it be hot or cold can have a negative impact on the quality of your sleep.
Is it Better To Try To Sleep in The Dark? And why?
Yes, generally for most people they can sleep better in the dark. Certain types of blind people are an exception to this rule as well as anyone else that lacks light receptors in theirs eyes. Without getting into the technicalities and scientific names of different parts or the eyes and brain that are effected. The fact is that light acts as a cue to tell you brain to wake up where as darkness has the opposite effect.
