Sleep Paralysis ~ What Is It?
Just what is Sleep Paralysis? Is it caused by a normal medically/scientifically explained bodily function? Or is it a paranormal phenomenon caused by something more sinister?
The purpose of this lens is to present just some basic information about Sleep Paralysis and then to provide links to other resources where you can learn more about it.
Below you will see a couple different polls. What do you think causes Sleep Paralysis? have you ever experienced it?
Sleep Paralysis And The Old Hag

Legend says that the Old Hag sometimes visits us in our sleep. The Old Hag sits upon a sleeping person, usually to draw out their life force. Here we have an artist's representation of what the Old hag might look like.
The phenomenon of Sleep Paralysis has been known to mankind for a very long time. All through history there have been reports of people who have awakened to feel a sense of weight upon them and an inability to move their limbs to escape this pressure. People who experience this phenomena almost unanimously describe a feeling of panic and fear at their experience which can last long after the paralysis of their bodies has faded and they can move again. Legends have arisen in every culture as a means of explaining this sensation, now called sleep paralysis.

How to Detect Sleep Paralysis
This is a quick effective technique in identifying the state you're in, and waking up as quickly as possible. Of course, this can be difficult in paralysis, but if you're having recurring episodes, keep trying this technique.

True Life Sleep Paralysis Experiences
Devilish Growling Noise
Though what is strange is two days ago my family and I got back from a trip and it was only about 10 o'clock at night but of course I was very tired. When I went into bed my mom came in the room and took some of her stuff out of my unpacked bags. After saying good night she left my room and I thought I fell asleep but I awoke hearing a very loud and devilish growling noise in my ears. At first I thought it could be my dog but I then remembered that she was still at the pet hotel.
When I tried to move to see what the noise was coming from, it felt like something was holding me down and I couldn't move any direction. Since I had covers over my head I couldn't see anything. So, when I tried to call for my mom, it felt like something was choking me to prevent me from saying anything. Finally when I was able to speak I called bloody murder for my mom but she never came. Then I dozed away.
When I woke up the next morning I was still a little creeped out but when I told my mom she told me that she had stayed up and walked past my room several times but never heard me. I really didn't want to feel crazy but I don't know. Maybe some people believe; and some just don't.

Sleep Paralysis - or was it a Dream?
Story: Well , this just happened out of the blue. I'm 13 years old so I really am not an expert at this and maybe any of you guys could help. One night I was sleeping, and I heard my mother go to my brothers room to give him medicine since he was sick. Obviously I had just woken up - maybe like at 4 am.
Anyways ,while I was just laying there waiting to sleep, I really don't know what happened - I heard screams in my right ear. ONLY my right ear. But it wasn't terror screams , it felt like a classroom scream you know? and - I got totally freaked out and I couldn't even move. I tried screaming to my mom but nothing came out.
When I tried yelling with force I only got a whisper to come out. I then saw my mom come and say 'what'? and I was trying to explain.
After that everything went out and I later woke up. I really don't know if this was a dream or not. BUT WAIT - that's why I'm questioning it, because later when I got from school I asked my mom if she came to my room to ask me anything. She just looked at me with a confused face and said no.

I Experienced Sleep Paralysis for the First Time
about 9 or 10 years ago
Fortunately for me a week or so before my episode I had watched a program on the History Channel about sleep paralysis (Waking Dreams), talking about the legends the history and the medical research and study. I am so grateful that I have a high curiosity for history and science or I wouldn't have watched that program that night.
When I experienced my sleep paralysis episode I had just completed a video workout after dinner, which is was my normal routine at the time. I had laid down on the couch afterwards feeling tired. I had planned to go out with a friend that night and thought to take a quick hour nap before getting ready. It was probably around 7pm-7:30pm at night. The lights in the living room where I was laying were on, the TV was on (I need "white noise" when I sleep), but the volume was turned down low.
Is Sleep Paralysis Paranormal?
"... I was aware of an evil dark presence in my room. When I tried to change my position so I could better see what it was I found that I was paralyzed. When this happened to me, and it has only ever happened that one time, I had never heard of the term "Sleep Paralysis..."
Read Is Sleep Paralysis Paranormal?
I woke and I saw the room as I would normally when I was awake. The lights were still on, the TV I could lightly hear off to my left and I could see the length of my body lying on the couch. I blinked a bit and tried to stretch and then I realized that I couldn't move. I tried to move again, and nothing. I tried as hard as I could to focus all my attention to my toes and move them... still no movement, nothing and yet I could feel myself trying to move within my head (if that makes sense), I tried so hard to get my body to move that I felt this internal shaking feeling, like my head shaking and it vibrating down my body with every ounce of force I could manage and still I could not move. I couldn't speak either, but I could look around with my eyes. I strained to see as far up, down, right and left as I could.
The room was still, and aside from the low volume on the TV it was quiet. I started to panic at this point, as it's very scary to be stuck in that position silent and paralyzed, and alone. I calmed myself and tried to analyze what might be going on (I tend to resort to logical thinking and breaking problems down when stressed), and it was then I remembered seeing the program on TV some weeks earlier about sleep paralysis. That gave me a lot of comfort, and I tried to relax as much as I could while I waited out this experience.
It was after a minute or so that I then started to see a dark hazy circle developing around my peripheral vision. It became more and more dark over time, and almost tunnel like. I started to feel like there was someone with me in the room, something malevolent and just out of sight, yet I knew it was there with me. It was a horrifying feeling and the minutes ticked by like hours in my head.
I tried again to shake myself free of this feeling and tried with everything I had mentally to break this experience. I'm not sure how long I lay there trying to break free but eventually I was able to move, and I sprung up quite quickly off the couch to a standing position and spun around the room looking for the darkness I had felt and seen. It was gone but my heart was racing.
I was very much awake, very much aware of my surroundings. I knew that I had just experienced sleep paralysis. I think, had I never seen that program I would have suffered much more than I had emotionally because it was quite terrifying.
I have had similar sleep paralysis experiences before but these have been short, also in complete darkness so I'm guessing my eyelids are closed during them, and I cannot open them. I still feel that internal shaking myself out of it, and they usually don't last long nor are they as intense, yet I still feel the darkness and fear it while experiencing it. I try my best to keep my stress levels down because that's when it happens most of the time.
I hate this experience, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I have not had an episode in over a year, and I hope I never had another one again!

My Weird Experience with Sleep Paralysis
Suddenly, I felt like I was half asleep and half awake. Afterwards, I felt fear and couldn't move. I was aware of my surroundings at that point. I remember yelling my sister's name, screaming to her, "WAKE UP, HELP ME I CAN'T MOVE." But that's when I realized my mouth wasn't moving. I felt like if I did moved and tugged on my sister, but I saw that my arms didn't move one inch.
Afterwards, I suddenly felt a heavy pressure over me, some invisible force started choking me. I would say it lasted for 30 seconds, but it felt for a lifetime. I honestly thought I was going to die that night. And when it let go, I regained my movement and touched my neck. To my surprise my neck felt really cold and I was breathing really fast.
I told my mom about this and she asked me, "Did you pray last night before going to sleep?" I replied, "No." So I guess before going to sleep I should pray because if I don't this might just happen again.

Sleep Paralysis Zapping My Energy
My name is Lisa I'm 23 years old. I live in UK, Sheffield. I started having sleep paralysis when I turned 20, it would occur every once every couple of months. But this was the strangest I ever had...I was having a 'power nap', I opened my eyes... I thought I was awake. Everything in my room look as it should, I could hear a loud buzzing noise getting louder and louder, it sounded like a helicopter. I tried to move, but I was completely paralyzed. I couldn't shout for help, it felt like there was a huge pressure on my chest. I closed my eyes, too scared to see what was in my room.
Usually when I shut my eyes and counted to ten I would wake up, I counted to ten over and over again, I couldn't wake up. I felt a chill run up my spine. It felt as though the thing in my room, all I can describe as the white mist, was zapping energy from my forehead. My forehead began to ache, the dream felt like it lasted for hours.
When I eventually woke up my forehead was aching. Was it just a dream? If anyone has any similar experiences please comment below.

Sleep Paralysis Experience and Heavy Pressure
Anonymous
One night I went to sleep and in the middle of the night I woke up and I tried to get out of bed. I was shocked, even terrified when I found that I was unable to move anything except for my eyes. I could see everything around me very clearly. I tried to scream but I couldn't make a sound! I struggled to move my body, to raise up.Suddenly I felt a very heavy pressure pushing me down into the bed. I somehow sensed, or knew, that it was an evil entity. Perhaps it was the devil or a demon or some other evil thing, I did not know what it was but I felt that it was very evil.
At the time I experienced this I had never heard of "Sleep Paralysis". It was only after I began researching online trying to find an explanation for what I went through that I came across this term and found out what I had experienced that night. It has never happened to me again and I pray that it never does.

Sleep Paralysis Experience and a Struggle
Suman Shrestha
I woke up and looked at the clock facing my bed on the wall. It was 2 am and I was wide awake. I wanted to go use the restroom so I tried to get up from my bed. As I was getting up I felt something cold, almost like a hand, grab my two arms by the wrist. I also felt something sit on top of my chest. Let me remind you I am wide awake and in disbelief of what was happening. I am a very strong martial artist. I was struggling to fight whatever this thing was. Then all of a sudden I felt something grab me by the ankle and pull me down the bed. Now that scared the crap out of me. And so as I was struggling all of a sudden it let me go. Funny thing was when I finally could get up I realized I had been dragged to the edge of the bed with my legs dangling. This event really disturbed me so I asked around of any other paranormal activities around the apartments. It turns out a guy had shot himself in the same apartment as I was living two years earlier. And when I saw his picture there was a strange familiarity. It was as if we had met before, perhaps that night.

Sleep Paralysis Experience on My Couch
Angela S.
I felt afraid because I couldn't move and then I noticed that standing right beside the couch, where my head was, was a child dressed in a yellow raincoat and hat. That sounds ridiculous I know, but I swear this didn't feel at all like a dream. All I could do was watch it's reflection in my TV screen and it never moved. It just stood there looking at me lying on the couch. When I could finally move, it was gone.

Sleep Paralysis Experience and Thoughts

Anyone who has seen anything after waking up like this has probably been in a sort of dream state where they haven't fully awakened. It may feel like your wide awake, but we've all had dreams that feel like we're awake, haven't we?

Sleep Paralysis Experiences All of My Life
Miriam Martinez
I too have experienced sleep paralysis and never knew there was a name for such things. I have suffered from it all of my life. The last sleep paralysis I had was a few months ago while I was babysitting my grandsons. I was laying on my right side with my youngest grandson laying right next to me while my oldest grandson, who is eight years old, was sleeping at the bottom of the bed on his back.
I was facing this door mirror just about to fall asleep when I saw my oldest grandson rise out of his body and come towards me and bite me on my neck and then he went back to his body. I could not move or even scream out but the most frightening thing was when I got up the next morning there was this big scratch on my neck in the same exact place where he had bitten me.

Sleep Paralysis Panic
Do any of you guys think that when I thought heard my sister wake up and started to talk and my dog was running around, was just a distraction for a spirit or something to put me in a sleep paralysis state?
Also I had another experience like year ago when I couldn't move or open my eyes I felt something touch the side of my mouth before I woke up, could that mean anything?

As I hear that I start to become really heavy almost paralyzed, like something is holding me down, I try to scream or move but I cant, I know I can but I cant do it (it feels like someone or something is sucking the energy out of me). most of the time I hear voices in the background I hear screaming people (as if they're being tortured or something) then I can hear a little child screaming something like "mommy mommy" it's very eerie and it echoes. but every time its something different I had my last experience just an hour ago it sounded like someone was saying "Ericka" I cant tell if it was an adult female or a child.
Sometimes when I wake up I find scratches on my body (my arms, legs, chest, and my lower stomach) and the scratches are under my clothes, how would anyone be able to do that? Nothing could have been scratching me, I don't have ANY sharp objects near my bed, and my bed couldn't scratch me (its an air mattress). I see some things when that happens but not that often, usually its like I'm laying on the floor and the background is reddish black and there's something falling from the sky like ashes or something from fire, and there's these little demons that run around really fast back and forth with feet that are red, bony, and webbed with claws (I can only see from the waist down) could this be a vision of hell? That's what I started to think but I don't know.

Personal And Scientific Account Of Sleep Paralysis
"Wrestling With Ghosts" summarizes and updates a growing literature that includes traditional cultural accounts, scientific research, and subjective reports about the uncanny sleep disorder referred to as sleep paralysis (SP). The book serves as an important tool to normalize the sleep paralysis experience by attempting to remove its often-publicized mystical and supernatural aura. Specifically, the book is a serious contribution to the psychological and social scientific literature as an example of behavioral/social methodology in clarifying psychological phenomena that can be misinterpreted individually or by culture as "paranormal." However, the book does not refute the very real phenomenology of the experience and is intended as a practical guide for recognizing and managing the disorder in creative and self-enhancing ways. Moreover, this work reiterates the aesthetic and creative power of uncanny dreaming regardless of its origin.by: Jorge Conesa, Jorge Conesa Sevilla
This aesthetic dimension of sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming is part of mythical, shamanic, creative, personal and scientific multidisciplinary approach to studying and describing dream phenomenology.

Someone VERY familiar with Sleep Paralysis
Feb 13, 2012 @ 5:50 am | delete
- Okay well I'm very familiar with Sleep Paralysis because I've been having them a lot since roughly around...... my whole life! I'm 20 now in college and luckily I don't get them often from back to back; maybe three times a month at that (still sucks) but anyways point is I get them a lot. My last episode was yesterday (February 12 2012) while on a plane traveling back to AZ from Seattle. I remember I was extremely tired and thought "I'll just sleep on the plane". So i'm in the isle seat and i doze off completely, but after i'm guessing 30 minutes or so, I wake up but because I've had these episodes so many times before, I knew I wasn't really awake. I just remember I was in the middle of dreaming when all of a sudden I was staring at the seat in front of me. I could look around and hear just fine but I couldn't move or talk. I tried moving but like every person who's had these episode, I couldn't. I then started to panic. I read a lot of stories and what the internet has to say about the symptoms of the "Old Hag" sitting on your chest but I've never had that feeling of pressure on my chest but I do struggle with breathing. I always figured it was because I started to panic and I would panic because I couldn't move and it would feel like my body was very uncomfortable! My episodes thankfully only last for seconds but they feel like forever. Usually I'd find a way to force myself up by either internally forcing myself up some how or breathing fast rapidly (which is my last resort because that just makes it feel like your really suffocating and I'll panic more but it seems to always do the trick) but once I'm up, it will literally be within 1 to 2 seconds later I'm back in the same situation because where my minds awake but my bodies asleep. So now when it happens I'll force myself to get up and get a drink of water or something just to really wake my body up. Then later when I go to bed Its all better.
There are three episodes from my past that scared me really bad.
1. I was laying in bed and my bed faces the door to my room and I would always leave my door open so it would just be a dark door frame. Well I remember I was laying on my side facing the door and without knowing it, I was awake while asleep. I could see my room perfectly looking around, I just couldn't move and it was really uncomfortable, so that started to freak me out to where I started to panic. I tried so hard to move that my body would jerk sometimes but it felt impossible. Then I felt a strong presence from behind me (spooning distance away) and felt as if they were hunched over me near my face just staring. I was laying on my side and obviously couldn't move so I couldn't turn around to look but the feeling was there for sure. All I could do was wait it out which was probably 20 seconds max. Then I finally jerked myself up, readjusted myself, but like I said before I would fall back asleep ended up in the same state seconds later. This time it wasn't that bad. I could still see my front door and a little past my door is my bathroom. I remember laying there trying to force myself up when all of a sudden I see the hallway light go on and my mom walk in my bathroom. I remember hearing her flush the toilet and everything and I was trying to call her so she could wake me up but I couldn't say anything and she left my bathroom and the lights went out. Later I finally managed to wake myself up but once I did, I came to the realization that my mom hadn't used my bathroom; I was imagining it. I readjusted to where I was more comfortable but still looking at the door, I had my third and final sleep paralysis episode that night. AGAIN, I tried waking up by internally forcing myself up but while struggling and looking at the door, I saw the image of a little girl's shadow. I was like whoa, I need to get up and I need to get up NOW! At the same time I'm trying to stay calm too because I knew in the back of my head it was me intertwining my imagination from the dream world into the reality (but still i was very scared). Then as I'm trying to force myself up, as fast as a blur, the image of the girl runs up behind me and starts whispering really fast in my ear like a horror film. I could feel her presence behind me like the hairs on my neck were standing or something. The only thing I could do was lay there and take it (no jokes lol)! Finally when it was over and I could move again, I was like forget this and turned on all the lights and started watching tv till I just passed out. That happened when I was around 15, 16.
That's my story

- so im not really sure if i had expierienced sleep paralysis or not so im wondering if you guys could help me out? Well im 15 years old and ive been trying to have lucid dreams for about a week now.. last night i woke up in the middle of the night, around 5, on the couch.. and i tried falling back asleep around 5:45... a little while after that i kinda lost track of time and yeah... so at the time i thought i was dreaming and i was laying on my left side facing the couch and my arms were kinda underneath the back cushions, and thats how i feel asleep so i was confused... i tried to open my eyes but it was very dark so i couldnt tell if they were open or not, i was very disoreinted... i tried to move my hands but they wouldnt move so i attempted to flip over but my whole body wouldnt move... i kept thinking to myself, " am i dreaming?" "Is this a lucid dream?" " do i have to have the mental strength to move around in a dream?" And such... also what i kept hearing yelling, like it would start from far away and slowly grow louder and louder and it startled m.. so right after that i started just having like a normal dream and then i woke up, and it was around 6:30... was i dreaming or was it sleep paralysis right before i fell asleep??

- So it kind of developed from a dream i was having. my dream was i was at school talking with my friends when when i was about to make a point, my voice dissapeared i thought it was the flu sickness and my friends thought it was pretty funny. then somewhere along the line i had a waking dream (sometimes when i try to fight the sleep paralysis im still dreaming) where i was trying to wake up from my bed. i couldn't speak or stand up, but i thought i was crawling towards to door way to get help from my parents. it was hard to make out what i saw (almost as if it was thought out of my head and didn't manifest well in this scenario) but there was decaying ghoul thing standing in the way of the door and i was completely powerless on the floor to get this thing out of way. then i actually woke up. im still having the sleepy spell over me right now and i am worried about relapsing into a paralyzed sleep again. i wasn't that scared of what i saw, but it leaves me wondering, when i have dreams like this, why when i ever see creepy stuff like this, its soo fuzzy as if i thought of it out my head? i guess its a problem i have in my waking life where i create my own demons and wasting my energy anticipating something bad to happen. that must be my real demon. i had a similiar waking dream in my room again, where i saw a small shadowy figure like a cat or imp scurry away out of my sight. i was in a huge mess in my mind because i was conjuring up this imagery to the point where i was absolutely sick of my self, then in my distress, i found my self being cradled by a person on my bed. i thought it was my mother ( which i dont appreciate because i am 18 years old) but i also thought it might have been someone like jesus because i thought it was his character to intervene with people in distress.

- It's interesting, the image of the 'old hag' who sits on you so you can't move upon waking up, because I had a dream--it was around 1 pm and I had gotten out of class and went back home to take a short nap. In my dream, my dad was yelling at me for some reason (like he often does haha), but suddenly his tone became different, and just his personality--even in a dream, I could tell--shifted. Suddenly he wasn't my dad, or my dream dad. His voice changed into another's, and then I shifted my vision over and I saw my mom, except she had the face of...of someone REALLY disturbing, like a mole-like face of a man, dark-colored skin, and a giant nose (width-wise, not length). Like it was FAT. And they were both talking to me and nagging at this point, and I interrupted with "Wait a minute...you guys aren't my parents!" At that moment, it was kind of like an "aaawww shoooot! He got us!" kind of moment, and they both were about to do something horrible, I could just feel it, so I rocket-launched mentally out of the dream, hit the emergency-eject button n just got the HECK out of there. When I woke up though, I was in blackness, and I could still hear the voices echoing around in my mind, and I couldn't see for a bit, then I could only open one eye--even then I was only squinting; I felt like the guy in the Diving Bell and the Butterfly (if anyone's seen it haha). And I tried to move but couldn't. The way I overcame this was thinking of it as a 'funny' experience, if that makes sense, like "well, here I am"--I get hyper-panicked VERY easily, but for some reason I was just like "hhhmmm...this is interesting", and then I was easily able to break out of it. So that's what you have to do, kids, just think of it as funny--but it's not like I forced myself to think that way because I tried other techniques that didn't work, I just felt it naturally, so this may not work for everybody...but let me know if this helps anyone who experiences SP in the future! Cheers!

- Sleep paralysis used to happen to me when I was a lot younger (pre-teens). And I can tell you it was NO dream, I dont care what anyone says. It would always happen while fully awake after having closed my eyes for mere seconds, and there's no way I could ever come anywhere NEAR a sleeping state in that short amount of time. The roaring sound would start seemingly far away, and would get louder as it seemingly got closer until it sounded like a helicopter was landing on my roof. During all of this, I would be completely paralyzed and terrified, unable to move a single muscle.. couldn't even open my eyes.. and I would fight and fight and use all my will power to move SOMEthing, and as soon as I was able to open my eyes, the sound stopped. This would happen over and over again all night long for many nights in a row, on and off for years. The last time it happened, I fought with all my might because it felt like someone was lifting the head of my bed to tilt it and I felt I was sliding down to the foot of my bed and absolutely petrified of sliding off completely.. as tho I would slide into a bottomless pit (again.. this was no dream).. I finally was able to to open my eyes and I found myself kind of twisted around on the bed, and it was only about 3 minutes since I had initially laid down.

- Second time i tried this was thmost terrifying thing i've ever tried, and i had to move my bed after this dream.
Anyways, i "woke up" laying in my bed, and suddenly something was dragging me out of my bed, but there was nothing there .. It dragged me out, and half way in to my closet .. I tried to get up, but everything around me was twisting, and i felt like i was dragged toward the floor, like i was a magnet, and i was only half my real size.. I managed to walk, and look out of my bedroom door, from which i could see my front door. By that door a creepy little creature was standing, i dont remember what it looked like, except that it was small.. I screamed as loud as could, and then i woke up for real in my own bed, but i wasnt able to move, so i panicced..
I've tried this like 30 times after .. i have bad sleeping habits so i assume that, that's the reason why ..

- i have had sleep paralysis for the last 40 years, and unfortunity it gets worse. just the other night i had the most scariest episode ever. first of all i do not believe in the super natural having anything to do with it. back to the story every since i've had them not being able to move at all i aslo can't breath, which is the scariest thing i've ever experienced. the older i get the worse they get. i truly believe that's what's going to kill me...i thought day before yesterday that was going to be the case. Doctors really need to really take a look at this and figure out how to handle it. the only thing is that they will never understan until they've experienced it.

- For a long time I had no idea I wasn't the only one who'd experienced something like this. It started for me when I was 16. I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep, when I felt as if something had grabbed ahold of my mind and (I don't know how else to explain this) pulled me deeper into myself. I couldn't move a single muscle even though my mind was racing. I was finally able to jerk out of it. Out of curiousity I tried laying still and entering the same state of mind I had the first time it happened, but this time with my eyes opened. And it worked. I became paralyzed...my gaze couldn't move from where my eyes were fixated, and my eyelids were twitching. Terrifying. I used to joke that I was either abducted by aliens or the house was haunted. But it happened to me at least 5 times since then. Sometimes it occurs when my eyes are closed, sometimgs when they are opened. One time I heard a buzzing sound as it was happening. I dread it so much. My most recent occurences were even more frightening, because like so many others, I felt this pervading -evil- presence hovering all around. I'm not particularly religious or spiritual, but nontheless it like something evil was trying to take me into the darkness. Now the thought of it happening scares me so badly that even if I feel any small sense of it possibly occuring, I have to move my arms and legs to be sure and "ward" it off. The fact that this is simply a sleep issue that has happened to many people doesn't make it any less horrifying when it happens. I cross my fingers and hope I'll never experience it again.

- I had a sleep paralysis experience about 2 years ago. I had just traveled 8 hrs by car with my sister's family and my mom. It was late at night so me and my daughter had decided to spend the night at my sisters and leave early the next morning. We both slept in her spare bedroom in a queen bed. I was very tired so I fell asleep fast. A few hours later I awoke and felt that I could not move. I opened my eyes and saw either 3 or 4 black human shapes hovering above me. I remember looking up and for some reason it looked like I was floating with them because the ceiling looked closer. The figures had no features just dark images and they seemed to be looking down on me. I could not see any legs, just the from the waist up and their hands were down as if they were lifting my bed up. The figures seemed to sway back and forth and I tried to scream or move and I couldn't. My heart was racing and I my first thought was that I was dying and these figures were here to take me away. After some struggle, I was finally able to move and touched my daughter who was laying next to me. The figures vanished as soon as I could move. I ran out of the room and woke up my sister and my mom. I told them what I saw and my sister told me that she has had similar experiences and not to worry because it was just sleep paralysis. But it frightened me so much, I was afraid to sleep for weeks.

- I've experienced something like this. Well, I guess it could be called this. I was sleeping. Then, I woke up. My eyes wouldn't open. The room was very bright, like I had left the light on. I though, "That's weird, I never leave that light on-" And my thought's kind of oozed away. I stopped worrying, but I wasn't asleep and I couldn't move. I heard some kind of voice, "Don't worry, you are safe." I manged to crack my eyes and strange shapes were hovering above me. Their heads are huge. They kinda looked like (don't judge me by this) Megamind from that movie, just-not... blue. Their eyes were very blurry, but they were obviously HUGE AND BLACK AS PITCH. The big one, who was front and center, noticed I was awake, and I felt a scrape. I have no memory after that except for knowing I was awake, because it is mostly a big bright blur.

- I've experienced sleep paralysis twice... the first time it happened was right after me n my gf broke up, so I think stress caused it. Well it was 12 in the afternoon and I woke up and rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. I heard something running around my basement (my rooms down there) and I figured it was my dog. It stopped by my bed so I decided to try and pick it up but I couldn't move. Then a figure started to rise over me from the side of my bed. I tried to yell for my brother (we share a room) and I couldn't speak. I could feel the figure looking at me and it was getting closer. I finally managed to let out a faint scream and it broke the sleep paralysis. The second time was a week later I was having a very vivid creepy ass hell dream, and it was staged in the very first house I've ever lived in. I soon realized that I was dreaming and was consciously thinking in my dream. My very first Lucid Dream. I tried to manipulate my dream, but as soon as I tried, I became paralyzed in the dream. The dream literally melted away and I was lying awake still paralyzed on my couch. I had the feeling of a presence in the room that was coming for me. I wasn't scared at all because I knew it was my sleep paralysis. A couple faint screams was all I could get out and it stopped. (I wasn't scared, but for some reason when I make noises it breaks the sleep paralysis)

- I used to get this weird sensation right before drifting off to sleep or right upon waking. I would be in a transe where my mind was awake, and I was able to think clearly, but my body would be in a paralyzed state still sleeping. It was the strangest feeling it was like the same feeling one would have if an arm or a leg would be "sleep" (the feeling that one has when circulation is cut off from a limb, almost like needles or numbness in an area) but the feeling would be upon my whole body. I would be able to open my eyes and look around the room but I coudnt not wake my self fully up it would just have to wear off. this feeling was especially scary when I would sleep in a dark room by myself. How ever for me I never saw any beings or anything and never heard any voices but there was almost a demonic feeling or presence that I felt. I would most often lay there and pray in my head while I this was happening. One day I told my mom and she said that it was the "witch on my back". This started when I was about 16-20 years old. I had a life changing experience that involved me getting saved by Jesus Christ and I stoped drinking excess alcohol and smoking. After this experience I felt peace in my spirit, I am not 24 and to this day I have not been afflicted with this feeling for almost 4years not. I hope and pray that I never do again because it is one of the worst experiences.

- I have experienced SP many times in my life. One of the more "memorable" times, that wasn't as scary as others but wierd, was when I felt I was being pulled towards the end of my bed, I felt my cheek sliding over my pillow and mattress and I couldn't fight it. Eventualy I reached the floor and I was off the bed completely. Then I woke up and realized I hadn't moved an inch, I was still in my bed.

- I'm 18 and I have had sleep paralysis a number of times. After the first two times it happened to me I looked up what was going on and found it was sleep paralysis. So anytime it happened I wasn't scared and it went away very quickly. This morning was different though. I was laying on my right side (awake trying to go back to sleep) I was thinking about a song and the lyrics go, "I make the devil hit his knees and say the our father..." after i thought about that i said the our father in my head, really close to falling completely asleep, and out of nowhere, as soon as i finished, it felt like someone was actually pushing and holding me down. During that there was something talking very fast that i only made out one thing it said..."you understand!" whatever it was sounded angry. So anyway i couldn't move or barely talk like sleep paralysis. Was this just a more severe case?

- I have experienced sleep paralysis a couple of times before, but the last time I experienced it was the worst. I was having a nightmare beforehand, and it was like in my awakening stages I still could not escape my dream. That is, I was awake at one point, unable to move in my paralysis but able to observe my room (I know I wasn't dreaming because I have a digital clock visible from where I was laying, at this point the time was 4.29am) but then I would fall back into my nightmare, the end result being I was unable to tell what was real and what wasn't. I had a friend sleeping over and I remember trying to scream at her in hope that she would wake me up. Later she told me how she had been observing me but I was only making very soft gargling, rasping noises. I remember in an effort to turn to face my friend I saw in the corner of my eyes a woman standing in my room, watching me, but the harder I tried to look at her she just seemed to disappear. Overcome by fear I turned my gaze to look at my clock again and the lady was there, sitting on my bed, right on top of me. I could even feel her weight on me. I think this is he point where I forced myself to regain movement in my body, and when I looked at the time again it was 4.36am. Seriously the worst experience of my life, I still get chills thinking about it.

- Here's my experience..
It happened this morning ( December 23, 2011 ) I was trying to sleep cause I can't sleep. Then suddenly I can feel this force at my right side coming closer to me. I didn't freak out cause I thought it was my sister's foot. ( we sleep together ) Then I finally get to sleep. After that, the force got heavier and I started to wonder why. I tried to move my arms and legs but I couldn't. I tried to shout for help but nothing was coming out of my mouth. I tried my best to move but I couldn't. I was already freaking out. When I opened my eyes, everything was a blur and the only thing not blurry is the floating thing I can see. I'm pretty not sure what it was. After seeing that, I freaked out more. I didn't know what to do. After that, I can finally move. I tried to shout to see if something wad wrong with my voice but then nothing was wrong. After that I started searching about it. Then, I now know that SLEEP PARALYSIS happened to me. By the way, I'm 12 years old.

- sleep paralysis has been in my life for as long as i can remember....my most recent one was about a week ago...I was of course, half asleep, half awake, i was spinning in my sleep, jus laying there with my eyes closed trying to be calm and talking to god, doing whatever i could do to wake up, i tried calling my parents name, my gf name,....but this one was awkward, quite scary, different than most of my attacks....this time i saw a girl standing in the middle with black boots on, didnt get to see her face, but like i sed, i was spinning in my sleep and she was standing in the middle...i dont know how i woke up but wen i finally did, theres a suitcase at the corner of my room, the more my vision came back the more she disappeared into the suitcase..idk if im explaining this right,,,or good enuff for u all to picture what i go thru wen i get these episodes..each one is different...but in each one, im awake, trying to talk...and for some reason, im always spinning........

- first things first;
1. i don't hate god nor like him (same goes for every known gods or demons out there).
2. i only know a few stuff about this and based on what i've search so far, i think i have succubi with me.
3. my original/current religion is roman catholic but i study the occult to balance myself.
4. lastly, don't call a occult or devil worshipper just because you just read that i have a succubi with me and you think that i "traded" my soul with it or something else because i believe death. (neither in good nor bad side)
here's my story
=====================================================================
i had SP for like a year now but i think is kinda different from everybody else. i had two SP in the first night i had them. the first SP made completely paralyze, see nothing but i hear something laughing. this lasted for like 30 sec before i snap out of it. my reaction was basically "WTF?". confused i looked at time and it was somewhere between 230 to 250am. i said to my that it was only a dream and went back to bed. now this the time i had my second SP and it was scary. again, paralyze but this time i cant hear anything and saw something. it was a grey figure screaming in my face. i wont lie, the first thing that came to my mind was to say "god" but i decide not to. instead i used my willpower and fought back against it. i basically cursed like i never before to it. after like what seems like 10 min, i snapped out of it and check the time 3:00 am. in a "WTF" state again i just decided to back to sleep and this time i had a very creepy yet symbolic dream. in my dream, i saw a huge and grim looking castle and a hooded figure standing at it's entrance. this figure has a feminine build so it must be girl. here comes the weird part, she said "welcome".
as time passed by, i started having SP that has a feminine voice and definitely not scary (well sometimes) i would have SP when i forgot to set alarm clock wake me up if forgot to do a homework. i can also detect it before it comes and if i don't want too deal with it. i say "not today" and it stops immediately. therefore this not just a sleeping disorder, i think it is a succubi because of one funny SP it gave me. one night, i basically messed around with it and deiced speak outloud about this girls i kinda like. the second i finished the word like, the SP immediately begun and she was creaming "NO" like a thousand times. i was laughing really bad and i think she laughing as well in the end.
-thank you for reading

- Hey guys, I read about 5 stories on this page. I'd just like to say that i'm 16 years old, But even though, I'm an expert at this experience.(Well I'd Like To Say That Lol) Anywho, I've been experiencing these sleep paralysis ever since I was about 5 or 6. Crazy? Yeah.. And I'd like to think that it's hereditary. I'm not completely sure what this phenomenon is, But I like to call it as a Ghost sitting on you. Yeah yeah, I know ghosts may be a little 'too much' for some of you, but it's what I like to believe. My best advice is Never be scared of it, Lol. I've had COUNTLESS sleep paralysis through out my life. Atleast once a month, if not, more than that. Here's a Tip though: Always remain calm. As far as I've been tested, The more I struggle, the stronger it gets. And.. Well, This may sound crazy, But I like to have fun with this experience. Hehe.. I like to think that your body is asleep, but your mind is awake. But there's another part of a human body we all forgot. Our Soul. Try relaxing, let it take over, and eventually.. Leave your body. I've walked around before, and yet my body was still in bed, Asleep. Try flying? Heh, I know of a couple people who have stories about they flying before. Just.. Don't fly too far, your soul might be able to find its way back LOL. I'm unsure of the danger levels in this, but try to stay in range, in the house. You'll tend to find out that you can actually become a ghost, yourself. Say, For example, if your sister/brother or w/e is watching tv, and you're in a sleep paralysis, try seeing if you can walk/fly to them, and see what show they're watching. See what position they are sitting, try to memorize everything. And unravel the mysterious experience you just had last night to everybody you know. :] Oh, and one more thing, When I wake up from it, and if i fall asleep right after I wake up, I go straight back to being paralyzed. So yeah, that's already twice in one night. Sigh, it gets annoying, but I've adapted to it so much that I sometimes look forward to it, and see the things that i'm capable of doing. Be calm, Let your mind wander freely, and your soul will be carried along with you.

- Hello 16 year old lol. Im only 13 and i know alot about the subject your describing it is called Astral travel . Just to let you know there are alot of benefits in it and sleep paralysis is the best time to astral travel . i have experienced only one astral travel/ sleep paralysis effect i was paralysed and i knew that this was on of the best times to but i am only 13 years old and didnt want to experience the hole aspect of astral travel until I was older. I felt my body lifting out of my paralyzed body ... and coming out i knew that it was time but was to scared to let it flow calmly. I screamed out to my sleeping sister but didnt work I started thinking Im in my own house and im in control. And I managed to break my voice free of it i knew that the SP wasnt over as my body was still Paralyzed and still lifting. I didnt feel any presence of a demonic entity in the room.Which i find a bit weird as I finally know that it was SP that i went through and there was no beings super natural there. But I bless the house occasionally and my mother says salt keeps away negative beings so I sprinkle handfuls by my door and my windows before i go to sleep so that might be a reason why ? Who knows maybe the salt worked or it may not be the reason why they didnt come . Idk . My house is preetty spiritual just to say and we are not a crazy cult family but do believe in the super natural and paranormal .

- I used to think this was paeanormal as well, but it only seemed to happen when I went to bed with a lot on my mind - my body tired and my brain active. The experiences are still weird though. Everytime I experience it, the crushing pressure on my abdomen seems to get stronger. I force my eyes open and they snap shut again and in the meantime, I have this low buzzing in my ear. Once I vividly saw my mum pass my bedroom door talking about towels. Then I fell back to sleep and woke later when she was just getting out of bed. I asked her and she said she'd just woken up. I seem to have some weird hallucinations, like things scratched onto the wall and mice running round everywhere.
One of the experiences above sounded very similar to mine. I fell asleep with the light on in my room. Then I woke up hearing children scream, like they were on a rollercoaster. It was so loud that I woke up screaming, but I couldn't make any noise. I sat up and saw the bedside lamp was on and assumed my parents must have done it before they went to bed. Several times I woke up and left the room for one reason or another. The next day, I woke to find the light was on and neither of my parents said they'd interfered with it at all.

- Hi all, I have been having these unusually experinces for over two years now, but only untill yesterday have I ever looked it up on the Internet, as advise by my currect girlfriend. I was shockwed and relived to find out that what was occuring was infact recongnised as sleep paralysis.
Recently it seems to be happening more often than not and somehow befoe I got to sleepI know it is going to happen. Firstly my mind wonders into uncontrable thought like dream alougth I am still awake by this point. then my whole body statrts to become heavier and heavier although I am still partial awake. This cause me to jerk and shake as if trying to fight sleep even though I am completley knackered, similar to the feeling of falling asleep sitting up in a long car journey.when i finaly fall asleep I dont relaise at first that Iam sleeping then an uncontrable urge comes over me to turn on the bedroom Light or wake up my Girlfriend that is when the completley and utter fear takes over and I begin to panic. the only way i can descrbie it is being like stuck in box why your hands tied behind your back and struggling to get free. Iam aware that Iam unable to move any of my limbs but Ican still move my eyes as when i finaly break free the room looks the exact same and my girfriens is sleeping in the same position .Once in thi stste i try my hardest to move my body but am unable some time I feel like and actually think iam getting my torso up to a 45 degregce angle but its like a hit something that trying to bounce me back down but i fight against it and its like I am vibarating up and down and my eyeshit goes blurry and start vibarating. The worse thing is when you think that you have borken fre but quickly relaise that am still in it this can go on for a a while not know if iam free or not. When I finaly do break free its like a climax and an anti climax all rolled into one. I still do know who i manage to break free but it seems the more calm and focus i become i start to slip into a deeper less panic sleep which i will then burst out of. it feels like i have a massive gasp for air even though I dont. Its like you see on films when people have been drowing and brought back into concinouse sunddely. what Ican say is that it has change over the years I have had experincing where I think i have manged to get out of bed and turn on my room light before i notice it has come on i have already got back into bed and this is when i relaise i am still stuck in this place. i then repart the same sevral times untill finaly i get that scared i wake up covered in sweat and immedatley turn on the light to make sure i am awake. the feeling in these sleeps and the feeling of being awake is so simialr but as soon as awake its like i have come out of fog.
i have many more much worse experince but where i have woke up screamin and being afraid of my 3 year old daughte rwhen she walked out iof her room straight after i woke up. I thought she was something evil and i couldnt look at her.

- Thank you for writing about this subject. I'll be coming back to read more in the future. I am also a victim of sleep paralysis or "the witch riding your neck" as my grandmother used to call it. I suffered this phenomenon up to the age of 50 when something miraculous happened. Yet, even now, I am reminded that it can always return. I'm working on a book manuscript called "Strengthened" that tells about my experiences. Thanks again.

- I used to have recurring sleep paralysis...(or so I am told) I still think it was paranormal, but science says otherwise..
Here is my experience..
I would always fall asleep with the light on, as I was still a bit afraid of the dark. I would have been 24 yrs. old. Anyway, it would always start with my closet doors clicking, or being tapped. Then I would hear a loud buzzing noise in my ear, only my right ear. At that moment, I would wake up, but would be paralysed in the spread eagle position, at least that is what I remember. My eyes are open, but I cannot speak. This would feel like a very long time, but I know it wasn't.. Anyway, then my head would be pulled to the right, and snap back like a rubber band, my bed would shake, at the same time I see an orb move across my wall... Then it would be over...
This would happen to me at least once a month..

- Have had SP since I can remember. Episodes have become less severe over the years though. The worst was not knowing what it was. Once I could attribute a name to it, fear began to subside. Funny how we still know so little about our own minds, and how we tend to demean them by attributing supernatural causes to anything outside the norm. One of the results of a lifetime enduring SP is understanding how easily our conscious self falls for the tricks of the mind, which is able to conjure ghosts, angels and demons out of the blue with great ease. Anyway, a fun lens, and thanks for helping to bring this condition out of obscurity.

- My name is Megan Im 20 justs experienced sleep paralysis a couple hours ago from a nap, it was the most scariest ordeal i have ever experienced in my life i feel i had alot of control over it though because i am in the medical field and i knew exactly what it was, it wasnt what i expected because there was just something spiritual and paranormal about it. I took a 1 hour nap knowing i had to pick up my nephew from school later on, i "woke up" i felt like i was in another realm everything was dark it was dark outside i was kinda of sceptic because the time said 2 pm and it was dark outside and mind you i felt this was real life all of a sudden i hear trumpet noises and pots and pans this is when i realize i am frozen and cannot move they just kept getting louder and louder i tried to call out for help i had my phone in my hand i could not move couldnt utter a word, felt like something was on top suddenly i boom back into my body and i could move again it was wierd i hope i never experience anything like this agaiin!!! :( :(

- My name is Scott. I'm 23 and I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time the other day. I have heard that Sleep paralysis can go both ways fully paralyzed upon awakening and full control over your dreams. I have know about the full control for a while and find it intriguing I also have been told I sleep walk and talk.
To the point; the other day I had just gotten home from working a morning shift. Having gone out the prior two nights for a friends birthday and Halloween Horror Nights at universal the other night I figured I should take a long nap. (my normal sleep pattern is 8-10 hours I only had 8 in total over those two days) I set my head down and fell a sleep around 3.
At 4:30ish I was startled awake. I looked out my open door to see a figure that had walked/ appeared in after the ding-dong that my door makes when opened. I thought it was my roommate that moved out last month. (I live alone right now) I tried to say hi but no words came out of my mouth, so I tried again this time I got a squeaky wees to come out that kind of sounded like hi. At this point the figure said something like "aww looks like hes sleeping" as if talking to someone else in the room. At this point I made an effort to move to try and say "I'm not sleeping, hey", but as I tried to move I was startled by the feeling you have when your leg falls a sleep, but it was in my entire body. At this point the figure walked away in the direction of the door.
Now maybe this is where he sleep walking and being able to will my dreams comes in to play. Upon trying to move my body again I was able to force my legs to move off the bed. So, I was now legs flopped over the side back on the mattress. I tried to sit up right at this point, But what I found I was met with now was my upper-body/ neck area was the only piece of movement i was able to get. At this point I gave up on catching up to my roommate and let the exhausting feeling of sleep that had been plaguing me since I woke up take over. I closed my eyes and immediately reopened them. At this point I re-awoke fully rested and mobile and on a mission to find my x-roommate to say hi.
I walked out of my room took a look around the apartment but no one was there. I than opened the door and looked down the corridor to find no one in sight. It was than that I began to get a spooky feeling. I realized when the entity left the door didn't sound or at least I didn't hear it. So at this point I just thought nothing of it said it was a dream and went back to sleep.
However, utterly confused by the demeanor of, a hallucination while a wake or vise verse a sleep with the ability to move my legs, I placed the information on facebook. I got some good responses and being a believer in the paranormal found that every folk lore has a negative connotation with sleep Paralysis freaked me out.

- I had a dream a couple of nights ago, not sure if it's considered sleep paralysis, but here it is:
I was on a table, I think in a spa (not sure, that's where my dream put me) I remember feeling bare, like all that was on me was a towel to cover my lower body. I had a small towel over my eyes so I couldn't see. I heard foot steps to my left. They (apparently) were both my friends. The first one called out my name while the second one walked along. She said: "Brianna (the second friend) says she thinks we should kiss.". I sat there, unable to move, and unable to speak. She kisses me and yells out "There! I did it!". Then I woke up.
Not sure if it's considered night paralysis, but it felt very real and I felt very awake during it. I couldn't see, so all it was was sound. I also felt her kiss me, which felt very realistic, too.
I couldn't move or speak, and this only lasted for perhaps 45 seconds.
Sleep paralysis? It was a good dream.

- I feel I can now confirm a paranormal aspect to Sleep Paralysis from an episode of SP I had 3 months ago.
I've been experiencing sleep paralysis since my early twenties (I'm now mid forties) and I concurr with apsects of many accounts posted here. Yes they really used to freak me out, being unable to move or to speak, a real struggle to break free from it's grip. At some point I decided to explore the less threatening ones - this will sound schizo but i've been touched, seen & heard things in the past, I could go into detail but my post would be too long so lets get into my proof: The one I explored & confirmed 3 mths ago.
The night before I felt & saw out of my periphery as I was going into SP state the presence of 3 spirits, one whispered in my ear, I felt unsafe, so decided to break out of this SP encounter.
The next night, on the couch as it began, I felt safe so decided to go with it. The next part, I have never experienced before & I swear I felt totally awake yet thought if I walk this way & i'm sleep walking or the like I will walk into my table. I didn't.
So here I was in a room with a group of mixed people I felt were my age & friendly. A woman approached me & said "my husband will be here soon", she then said a first & second (last) name followed by a four digit number.
I'll spare the rest of the detail & get to the point. When I awoke I recalled the names & numbers so jotted them down to do as we all do these days & 'google' it later on that day.
I did! This is soo freaky i can't explain. The 1st google search I clicked on revealed an obituary article from a small local newspaper from a location 500 miles away, of a man that passed 6 mths ago that had the very same name & I noticed the second tribute to him was posted on the site at a precise time, the exact same as the four digits spoken to me.
You think that's feaky but here's the real kicker! His first name was the same as my middle name & his middle name was the same as my first. I didn't realise this at first as the 1st name spoken to me in SP was his nickname & abreviated version of my middle name.
He was by the descriptions an honorable man who served his country well - hence out of respect for his family, i've not revealed the detail.
I'd never heard of this man's name before & the four digits add more intrigue. Was it a message of some sort?, a warning perhaps?

- Oh my God!
Further to my post. I probably inaccurately described my SP as paranormal, it was more spiritual. But Guess what? After I posted my story I decided to look into the deceased man further - I found another obituary about this man that had infomation not in the article I first viewed...... Oh my God!!! he had the same birthday as me!!! He was born X-X-1946 & I was born X-X-1964 - How freaky is that!!!
I know what some of you may be thinking, but no! i've never googled myself & when I did using various combinations of my name, bday etc. no article about this man appeared in search results!!!
This next bit isn't SP related but something has awakened within me, i've also had many many premonitions over the last 2-3 weeks, most of which have come true within 48hrs. I told my partner a few days ago there was going to be a huge earthquake somewhere. then within 48hrs a 7.2 magnitude in Turkey. Another was thinking of someone I hadn't seen in almost a decade, I couldn't remember her last name then within 48hrs I got a FaceBook friendship request from her!!!
Maybe i'll be able to make sense of all this?, soon?, I hope so!

- PAUL! My name is Sally and I feel like you're the best person to talk to about SP since you've experienced it for so long. I have also experienced SP for a number of years now since I was about 15? And I am now going onto 21. My episodes seem to be really bizarre and more severe than most people have expressed here. Although I don't see anything (because everytime it happens I avoid opening my eyes), lots of scary things happen to my body, I think it'd be really good for us to talk about this further, and we may be able to discover something. My e-mail is sally.nguyen@live.vu.edu.au

- I had just experienced it yesterday. At the middle of the night, it was something like in my dream that a "devil" is on the top of my body trying to have a sexual contact with me. It was not just a dream because all I know was I'm almost about to be awaken. I can't move my feet even my whole body. I wanted to speak and pray. I tried my best to speak and seek for the Almighty God. But before that, I heard a voice whispering on my right ear. It was horrible and terrifying. It was like a voice of an alien. He spoke so fast and I did not really understand what he told me. Then, with all my best, I woke up. I immediately pray,"Lord, I give my fear on you. You are stronger from any evil. I fear no more because I believe you are with me." Then, I immediately turned on the lights and I embraced my bible right beside me. I send a message to my best friend who is at work and she replied. But while doing so, I even heard a voice. I don't know if I am having auditory hallucination that time. But I believe that it was not just a voice. I opened my bible and read it. In that way, my fear was gone and I slept embracing my bible.
I am a christian and I love God so much. I already received Him as my Lord and Savior before that incident happened. I don't know the cause of it so I searched the internet. In a video that I have watched on youtube, entitled "Sleep Paralysis - How to Stop it - Treatment - Help - Causes ", I found out that the cause of this experience was that I am having a strong urge to find out the truth about occult practices - is it right in the eyes of God or not. It all started when I watched a program which tackled that it is really wrong in the eyes of God so I told my friends about it. It was said in the above video that the more you seek about this occult practices, the more that it will open to you.
Sleep paralysis may come back with the work of the devil but I just don't care! I am not afraid because all I know I have Jesus who is far stronger than any sort of evil! As they say, "there is no fear in perfect love which can only come from God the almighty!"

- Hi RADM,
This is to suggest to you how the power in the name of Jesus works when you have a sleep paralysis experience. Firstly, the mention of the name 'Jesus' even in your mind during the experience forces the evil sprits to release you and allow you regain immediate consciousness..
I have been married for 30years and my wife till this day has had sleep paralysis just as you have described over this period. Some periods it is less frequent and others it is aggressive and the evil spirit attacks her so much so that after waking up there are scraches with blood on her skin. It has been a major concern for us as a family and we have done numberless deliverances and yet the results are at best temporary.
Recently, the attacks came with a veageance and I was compelled to use a deliverance book titled ' Deliverance From Evil Spirits' by Francis Macnutt. It advices on the use of 'deliverance objects' on pages 243.244 and 245, of either Oil, water or salt. He also suggests the prayers to pray o ward off these night demons from you house or room.
Since I did this prayer and followed all he recommended steps the spirits have not come back to our house or attacked my wife. You have to be truly born again and walk in the authority of Jesus Christ to do this, because evil spirits recognise those who are righteous and those who are not. If you have deliberate sin in your life, please ask for forgiveness before these prayers.
I know it will help you and keep you safe. My suggestion is to use the salt as this stays much longer than water or oil. May God uphold you and give you the victory in Jesus name. Amen.

- I used to get it every single night i could always feel myself slip into it then "it" would be there on top of me, strangling me biting me making me squirm, i would feel myself sink closer to what felt like death i could actually feel the life being drained out of me. It would make growling noises and speak in a language not of this world but whenever it did speak english it would be swearing and cursing at me the best way to describe it's voice is like a witch, sort of a high pitched shriek (although it was a male presence). I'm not overly religious but when i tried to pray to make it stop the electric shock feeling would become worse and i would sometimes feel a hand over my mouth stopping me, i learned how to sort of wriggle out of it but sometimes it was impossible as it would press me down harder. I eventually got used to it and would laugh at it and mock it saying i wasn't afraid but would always wake up close to tears. Whenever it happens it makes me feel like a weirdo because if this isn't super natural then it's somehow my mind that makes it up but i don't have morbid thoughts so i don't know where my mind get's it from :S Thank god it doesn't happen as much as it used to.

- Usually I have sleep paralysis after a bad dream. It freaks me out especially after nightmares. Last night I had a happy dream and then I felt my heart racing, I could't move i tried to scream. I remember thinking I was going to die.

- ok...so most of people say that they feel 'it' on their chest, but i always feel it lying behind me. And couple of times 'it' talked to me... actually...well for example i heard 'it' said with my grandma voice (while i was alone in the room, and she's in another city) :'i have to tell you something' . But the first time i had sleep paralysis...well,i cant figure out what does that mean/probably nothing but 'it' said :es combre ali (or how ever do you spell that) the next couple of times when i felt 'it' i (at least i think i do) i said :i'm awake' and then 'it' goes away. is that typical?

- I hope science has more explanation about this phenomenon than the weird experiences. Our mind is very powerful and sometimes deceitful too, it must be causing some hallucinations and may be it is all one's imagination.

- it happened to me this morning :( i woke up 630 and went back to sleep. just until 7.
i had a dream, about a little asian girl throwing up blood.. then she was looking behind me, saying DONT LOOK BEHIND YOU, DONT OPEN YOUR EYES..she kept on repeating this, it was getting louder, like she was becoming more afraid, in the dream i turned around to find this girl, pale, black hair with ripped white dress ( i ALWAYS dream OR see her.. ) getting closer to me ..like some horror movie. Then everything went black. Then i was awake! i heard everything the way it should, felt everything, but my eyes would not open!, they felt stuck with glue.. i thought ..shit i should hit the wall to wake my sister uo, i felt as i was dying, i felt like something was in my room, taking over me! i felt cold shivers.. then..something i can't explain happened... i heard a loud bang.. as if something fell. and then 3 LOUD HEAVY footsteps walk towards me...and just like someone is sluring there feet on the capert, right near my head, i felt a cold breath on my hair ...i struggled to open my eyes OR move..i woke up and started shaking.. in the midle of the room..there was my bag.. just laying there.... and i also felt like there was something other then me, in my room. i believe in paranomral activity... as i have expierienced ALOT while being awake... but this....felt like everything was worse... :( scary yeah?

- I am a 15 year old girl. I was about to go to sleep one night. I laid on my stomach and was starting to fall asleep, completely relaxed. All of a sudden I hear static noises and then I heard my heart beating unbelievably fast and thats all I could hear because it was so loud , at first I thought I was having a heart attack, then it started to beat slowly to the point where it was not healthy the way it was beating because it felt too slow, while all this was happening, my body felt numb, I could not get up. I have to move my finger in order to move the rest of my body when I my body is asleep but my mind is awake. But when I tried this, it wasn't working, I panicked in my mind, then I swear I felt a force pulling my right shoulder upward like it wanted my to face the ceiling. I finally got so freaked out I used all my strength to move my finger and I sprung up from bed in shock of what just happened. I tried going back to sleep after this , but every time I started to doze off , I became numb and didn't want what had happened to repeat so I take sleeping pills now. Does anyone think that this could be serious?

- Sent in by Lisa Littlejohn, Copyright 2011 i must say that this closely reminded me of what you said i been having this issue while sleeping for about ten years since i have been 10 and woke up one night "but wasn't really awake fully" but recently i have become really scared because i fell asleep yesterday while watching transformers 2nd movie next to my girl friend. Everything was alright, until i reliezed my girl friend was still next to me but i was dreaming right? Lucid dreams yes i had them before but this... this was diffrent because my head was humming and i felt a vibrating in the back of my head getting louder and stronger. This utterly terrified me as my head began to vibrate harder i tryed to call to her but only breathed the word help over and over... i also noticed that i could move my toes but only my toes. umm this is where it gets strange the vibration being utterly the most painful thing i ever exprienced makes me spring up and start sezuiring but then i wake to my girl friend asking me if i am alright. she tells me i was whimpering in my sleep like i was having a night mare but the vibration felt so real that my head felt hot like a motar that had been running way to much... and um it just scared the shit out of me because i have never had i guess i'll call it an episode like this before and i'm becoming fearful for my safety =[ anyone has any information for me please e mail ecky190@aol.com thank you

- Nice and information lens, there's no need to fear nighttime demons or alien abductors. If you have occasional sleep paralysis, you can take steps at home to control this disorder. Start by making sure you get enough sleep. Do what you can to relieve stress in your life -- especially just before bedtime. Try new sleeping positions if you sleep on your back. And be sure to see your doctor if sleep paralysis routinely prevents you from getting a good night's sleep

- I am on this site reading stories as the i had my experience last night the first time i have ever had one. I am 15 and i dont like sleeping as being the summer holidays my sleep patern was off i would normaly wake up at about 1 and fall asleep at about 2-3am well i woke up early that day did my normal day to day routine then i was watching t.v and was lying on my bed when i fell asleep then woke up at about 2am then i went to the toilet came back and got ready for bed. I got into bed and carried on watching t.v and was hoping i would fall asleep straight away but i was wide awake about an hour pasted when i heard noises which is normal in my house and why i dont like sleeping or trying to well i had bad thoughts started thinking about things that scared me and when you stard thinking about something you cant stop well i finally fell asleep and the woke up but i closed my eyes to try and sleep again but then realised my t.v was off and i leave it on as it helps me sleep then i got goosebumps and then my body shook without moving which dosnt make sense but other cases this only occurs when they strugggle but i was =nt struggling i tried moving after this occured and i couldnt i got really scared and clamped my eyes shut then i heard my door open which maid me even more terrified i then opend my eyes and saw nothing but darkness in the corner of my room then i woke up my t.v was on and everything was normal. I finally got to sleep and woke up this morning i told my mom and she said you have had sleep paralysis and she gets it now and then but she has trouble breathing which makes me think that it wasnt anything paranormal and something i have got off my mom the only thing that i think was wierd was how the t.v was off and the shadow in the corner. I am scared to go to sleep tonight and hope its nothing paranormal (or extraterrestrial as i am terrified of aliens) as it was the most scariest thing i have ever experienced. Please comment reply if you have had the same experience.

- My first sleeping paralysis experience was when I was little (probably around 9 or 10). It was night and I slept with my brother. During the middle of night, I happened to wake up with my eyes not fully open but I can see clearly see whats in front of me. I saw a black mass and it sounded like it was growling at me. I felt the sheets around me tighten and I couldn't move. I was such in great fear no words would come out of my mouth. The black mass came towards my face and growled at me even louder and thats when I woke up. That rest of the night I stayed up with the lights on.
I just had a recent experience last night. I was laying straight on my back and I woke around 6 am. Again, my eyes were half open but I could see everything infront of me. I couldn't move, I felt pressure on my head. I felt like I was floating at least 2 feet from my bed. I heard people whispering both in my ears really close; I couldn't say a word. I woke up and everything was fine when I switched positions. As a experiment, I laid straight on my back and tried going back to sleep. I opened my eyes and I was paralyzed again. I felt people whispering in my ear but this time it was in a deeper tone. I woke up and decided just to stay up.
