I wish I had discovered the Sleepy Wrap when my children (now 8 and 4) were infants and toddlers. Both my children were high-needs children and constantly needed to be held. I tried many slings--the Snugli (similar to the Baby Bjorn), the Over-the-Shoulder Baby Holder, and later, an unpadded version of the shoulder sling similar to the Maya Wrap. They were too uncomfortable, not secure enough, or too complicated to put on. Also, if the sling fit me, it wouldn't fit my husband because he is much larger than me. I guess one good thing that came from these failed attempts at finding the perfect baby carrier is that now I have Laura Hamilton's Terminator arms and can lift a 25-lb bag of rice one-handed.
I had long ago given up the search for the perfect baby carrier, so imagine my surprise as I tried on my friend's Sleepy Wrap at the park last week. After she taught me how to wrap it (which is amazingly simple), she helped me put her 6-month old baby in it, and within 2 minutes, the baby fell asleep. I walked around with the baby for over an hour and didn't feel one ache or twinge in my back. It was so incredible that out of all the topics I could choose to write my first lens on, I am writing about the Sleepy Wrap.
SLEEPY WRAP, HOW DO I LOVE THEE... LET ME COUNT THE WAYS
The Sleepy Wrap keeps your baby in a comfortable but snug position, so you don't have to worry about them falling out. With the over-the-shoulder type slings, I was always worried that the baby would slip out (which I confess she came close to a few times). I always had to keep one arm around the baby, just in case. With the Sleepy Wrap, the baby is completely secure (you can even put the fabric around the baby's head to support it), so you are completely hands-free.
2) IT IS COMFORTABLE (for you and the baby)
I wore my friend's 6-month old baby for over an hour (he fell asleep in the wrap promptly after I put him into it), and didn't feel an ache or twinge in my shoulders or back. With the Snugli, my shoulders would hurt within 5 minutes of wearing the baby. But the Sleepy Wrap distributes the weight around your waist and shoulders, so you can wear the baby for hours.
3) YOU WILL ONLY NEED ONE
The Sleepy Wrap is made of one long piece of fabric which you wrap around you multiple times for the perfect fit. Because of the design, it fits women (and men!) of all sizes. Also, the Sleepy Wrap will accommodate babies of all sizes from infancy to toddlerhood and beyond, so you will only need one.
4) IT IS SIMPLE
No complicated buckles, clips, or rings to fiddle with. Just wrap the fabric around you, and put the baby in!!
Motherhood is hard enough without having to do it one-handed. Hopefully the Sleepy Wrap will give you some more freedom and flexibility so that you can expend your energy on more worthwhile pursuits than lifting 25-lbs of rice with one arm.
