Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (Andrew Warhola, Andrej Varhola) was born in Pittsburgh in 1928.
His parents were Slovaks, or Carpatho - Rusyns who immigrated from eastern Slovakia. They were born in small village Mikova, near little town Medzilaborce in Slovakia.

Why did they leave Slovakia

Well, at that time everybody does, especially Irish. Main reason was an economic crisis and depression in Slovakia in the early 20's. Warhol family heard that in America would be better life. Everybody knew it in the Europe during this period. So, Andrej's (Andy's) parents Ondrej and Julia packed their staff and said good bye, ( I would say to their family and friends in Mikova, but everybody went with them :)), and decided to find a lucky life in Pittsburgh, Pensylvania, USA. If they did not left Slovakia, can you imagine what could posssibly happen with Andy's wonderful talent for drawing?

Most influential person in Andy's life was his mother Julia Varholova - Julia Warhol.
She was born, Julia Zavacka, in Mikova - Slovakia, before Czechoslovakia. She was married to Ondrej Warhola and to the USA emigrated in 1921.

The Zavacky family were Carpatho-Rusyn decent like the Warhola family.

Music, dance and art were always important part of families in Slovakia and in Julia Zavacka life too. It was heritage of every Slovak, or Eastern Europenian family at this time.

Who are the Carpatho-Rusyns?

There is still much debate by regarding the origin and early history of Slavic people. What is agreed upon, the Slavic people lived in the Mountains of the Carpaths region from the sixth century AD. The Carpatho - Rusyns are the descendant of one of the Slavic tribe lived along the Wisla river called the White Croats (Bilyj Horvaty).

By the year of 900, the waves of Slavic settlers calling themselves Rus came from the east and began assimilated with White Croats. From The Kievan Rus kingdom they adopted their national name Rusyni, meaning the descendant of Rus.

When the press asked Warhol where he and his family come from, he said from nowhere.

Andy Warhol got through his mother big love to Slovakia. She enjoyed singing traditional folk songs that she learned since her childhood, she loved drawing and doing everything what she brought, learned, knew from Slovakia . I'm sure, that he never forgot where he came from.
