Free software to speed up your slow PC

Do you have a slow PC? Did you know that every time you open up a page on the internet a temporary file is created on the hard drive of your PC?

If you do not remove these files periodically they will eat up the space on hard drive of the PC and over a period of time, your system will get slower and slower.

There's lots of ways you can speed up your PC, and before you start looking at how much a new system will cost you, I want to tell you about a completely free piece of software that you can easily download. I discovered this software, when I was looking for ways to quickly delete all these unwanted files on my PC.

While I was looking, I was also aware that I needed something that would automatically repair my registry files. I found exactly what I needed in CCleaner.

Are YOU looking for FREE software to speed up your PC?

There's no catch. I am not trying to direct you to another website where I want to try and sell you "stuff". The answer to your problems may be just one click away and best of all it is FREE!

What is CCleaner?

It can help speed up your slow pc

CCleaner is a brilliant utility that cleans out a system by getting rid of much of the potentially troublesome residue that inevitably accumulates on computers with regular use and particularly those being used to surf the internet.

CCleaner removes unused files from your system - allowing it to run faster and frees up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans all traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. It contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast, taking less than a couple of minutes to run on my PC and even better, it contains NO Spyware or Adware!

Do you want to protect your privacy on the net?

And how do you keep all this information to yourself?

If you want to protect your privacy, and you do not want others to know anything about your browsing habits, then CCleaner is an absolute must for you.

Did you know that all major browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari leave behind traces of your browsing history on your computer? This will happen even if you have set your browser to automatically delete your browsing history.

There are two ways to delete your browsing history:

manually delete all your cache files and hundreds of other history files, and risk completely messing up your browser

simply install an internet history cleaner

No, there's no hidden catch. I am not "hooking" you to visit my website - actually I don't have one - one click and you are on your way to info and a download that is freely available on the net.

What does CCleaner do?

How will it help speed up your PC?

CCleaner will clean the following:

Third-party applications - Including Spy Bot, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Google Earth, Netscape, MS Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and many more . . .

You can choose exactly what you want CCleaner to clean up by ticking or un-ticking the various choices on offer. It's unlikely to delete anything it shouldn't but it's worth reviewing the list of items it finds before removing them, just to be on the safe side.

For many people, particularly those who worry about what they should or should not delete or those who have little time, deleting masses of historical information is the best and the most efficient way to keep your system running well. However, if you want to take a more cautious approach, you can set CCleaner to reduce the likelihood that you'll wipe out something you may regret.

Don't forget the Registry!

Registry problems can result in a slow PC

Problems with Windows registry files are a common cause of Windows crashes and error messages. With a couple of clicks CCleaner will scan for problems caused by traces left from uninstalled software, invalid entries, references and links and provides a list of the errors found. You can then choose to repair each item individually or automatically repair them all.

The Registry Cleaner has features to remove unused and old entries, including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more... It also comes with a comprehensive backup feature.

CCleaner will give you the option to backup the Registry before making any changes and you can choose which parts of the database to scan and which to ignore.

The Editor's review

"Although it lacks a few of the bells and whistles found in other PC-cleaning applications, this free program offers more than enough features to make it a worthy download. CCleaner's interface is logically designed and makes it easy to wipe away your tracks from Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera, from various Windows system areas, and from some third-party applications.

CCleaner doesn't support the large number of extraneous programs that some competitors do, but it can erase traces from such popular programs as Spybot - Search & Destroy and WinZip. CCleaner now offers secure file erasing along with a Registry-cleaning utility that quickly scans for invalid entries before removing them. CCleaner can even back up your Registry before removal, in case it accidentally removes a crucial component, and the download includes a rudimentary feature for uninstalling any program on your machine.

Since this free application handles the majority of PC-cleaning chores and offers a nice extra, we strongly recommend CCleaner to all users, except those who need robust tools to remove supersensitive data."

Something to be aware of

Check out CCleaner's options

While deleting all browser cookies will prevent them from tracking your Web activities, it will also ensure that you need to re-enter your login information and/or lose customisation settings on all the legitimate sites you frequent.

To avoid this, one of CCleaner's option menus allows you to look through your list of cookies and set aside the cookies you want to retain. CCleaner remembers the cookies you selected for protection in future sessions, which makes it a lot easier to the next time around.

You can also set CCleaner not to delete temp files that are less than 48 hours old, since they can often be crucial to the recovery of, for example, a Word file or Excel spreadsheet if the application hangs or crashes unexpectedly. It's also worth noting that by default CCleaner won't bother with anything that is not in a system or application folder, but you do have the option to add your own folders to the areas CCleaner will scan.

AJ's honest review of CCleaner

And it really is an honest review!

There is no benefit to me whatsoever by my recommending this software to you, apart from the normal benefits of someone visiting my lens.

CCleaner is simple to use and I would recommend it to anyone to give it a try. I use it every three or four days and every time I use it, it deletes at least 40mb of files that are eating up valuable space on my PC and the whole process takes less than two minutes. Imagine how much space would be used if I did not run CCleaner for a month or so.

And if you want some facts and figures, have a look at this:

January 29, 2009 = Ran CCleaner, took 74.2 seconds and cleaned off 90.748 mb

January 30 (7.30am) = 2.21 mb

January 30 (10.00 pm) = 48.7 mb in 47.690 seconds

There! You have it! No clicks to a third-party website and no clicks to e-books. Your next click takes you straight to the download.
