Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing: Patterns and How-To for 24 Fresh and Easy Projects
Internationally celebrated designer Lotta Jansdotter collects 24 of her most popular sewing patterns into one irresistible collection.
Our innovative packaging makes for easy use reusable pattern sheets are neatly tucked into a folder inside this full-color, lay-flat spiral bound book. Lotta has included patterns for handy tote bags, smart aprons, chic bed linens, and much more.
Each project is paired with step-by-step instructions, charming photographs, inspiring design ideas, and helpful, hand-drawn how-to illustrations everything you need to make whimsical pieces for the home and beyond. Best of all, there's nothing complicated about the projects. Never has simplicity looked so sophisticated.
How to Make Sewing Patterns
Other books that allegedly enable you to draft your own patterns all turn out to be either how to BUY a commercial pattern & then alter it to make other designs, or else they only enable you to make clothing for the perfectly portioned body, which few of us have. A third alternative is that some books teach you to make shapeless "sack" clothing without much style. Almost all of these books require that you have a partner to help measure yourself and later to help fit the basic patterns to your body.
THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH MR. McCUNN'S WONDERFUL BOOK! He starts out by showing you how to measure yourself accurately without any helpers.
Then he takes you step-by-step through how to draft the basic patterns from your own measurements. He does NOT give tables of measurements for putting darts in, since the tables don't work for anyone without a "perfect" body. Instead, he explains how to custom fit the basic skirt, pants, bodice, & sleeve patterns to your own body, even if you don't have a "fitting buddy."
And if that isn't enough, he includes instructions on how to design your own clothing styles (or copy those you see in the stores) and then change your basic patterns to make those styles.
He expands on this to show how to make waistbands & cuffs, pockets & plackets, jackets & coats, and even how to make & fit a man's suit. (Yes, this book even has info on making basic patterns for MEN, not just women.)
There is also discussion of how to choose the correct fabric for your style.
As a bonus, he explains how to take your perfectly-fitted basic patterns and turn them into a "fitting dummy" that mirrors your own body perfectly!
This is one of the most complete books on pattern drafting that I've seen, outside of college texts. (And those texts aren't of much use to the home seamstress, due to their emphasis on standard sizing.) If you can do it to a pattern or fabric, this book has it!
This is the ONLY book I've found that truly teaches you to make your own sewing patterns FROM SCRATCH, without having to buy a commercial pattern as a starting point. Each section builds on the last, so don't start in the middle.
This book is the ONLY book I've found that let me make patterns and clothing that actually fit me!
There are no color pics, but PLENTY of black and white line drawings and diagrams illustrate each step, so it is easy to read & see each step of the process.
If you're serious about making your own patterns, you'll LOVE this book!

Blueprints of Fashion: Home Sewing Patterns of the 1950s (Schiffer Book for Collectors and Designers,)
During the 1950s, many women used their sewing skills to recreate the incredibly feminine styles that were adapted into commercial sewing patterns. The 1950s saw renowned designers such as Lanvin, Fath, Schiaparelli, and Givenchy licensing their names and designs to pattern companies in record numbers: designers from Paris to New York to Hollywood can be accounted for in the pattern catalogs of the 1950s. Any woman who could sew could have the latest designer styles for a fraction of the cost. Using over 600 color photos, this informative and enjoyable text outlines the beginnings of the huge pattern industry, its evolution, and continuation through the 1950s. Numerous examples of pattern-related ephemera are pictured along with different types of fashions--from dresses to separates to evening gowns to lingerie. Also included are accessories, needlework, gifts, and toys. This is an invaluable guide for all who are interested in sewing or designing.
Wonderful reference for dressmakers and fifties lovers
This book begins with an interesting overview of the beginnings of the home-sewing pattern industry, and has many interesting tidbits on that alone. But the real treat is page upon page of reproductions of the fronts of pattern envelopes from the fifties, most in color, and all beautiful. Hundreds of ideas for clothing for today.
Susan
A visual delight!
This is a *wonderful* reference for anyone interested in vintage fashion or vintage patterns. Wade Laboissonniere tells the history with page upon page of breathtaking photographs of patterns from the past. Each page truly is more delightful than the last. I will be ordering Blueprints of Fashion: Home Sewing Patterns of the 1940s immediately and can only hope that Mr. Laboissonniere is working on the 1960s and 1970s.

Overlock - Overlock Stitch
An overlock stitch sews over the edge of one or two pieces of cloth for edging, hemming or seaming. Usually an overlock sewing machine will cut the edges of the cloth as they are fed through (such machines are called ?sergers'), though some are made without cutters. The inclusion of automated cutters allows overlock machines to create finished seams easily and quickly. An overlock sewing machine differs from a lockstitch sewing machine in that it uses loopers fed by multiple thread cones rather than a bobbin. Loopers serve to create thread loops that pass from the needle thread to the edges of the fabric so that the edges of the fabric are contained within the seam.
Overlock sewing machines usually run at high speeds, from 1000 to 9000 rpm, and most are used in industry for edging, hemming and seaming a variety of fabrics and products. Overlock stitches are extremely versatile, as they can be used for decoration, reinforcement, or construction.
Overlocking is also referred to as ?overedging?, ?merrowing? or ?serging?. Though ?serging? technically refers to overlocking with cutters, in practice the four terms are used interchangeably.

Fashion - The Trends in Dressing for Men and Women
Fashion is the style and custom prevalent at a given time. In its most common usage however, "fashion" describes the popular clothing style. Many fashions are popular in many cultures at any given time. Important is the idea that the course of design and fashion will change more rapidly than the culture as a whole. Fashion designers create and produce clothing articles.
The terms "fashionable" and "unfashionable" were employed to describe whether someone or something fits in with the current or even not so current, popular mode of expression. However, more so in the modern era items termed 'not so current' may indeed fit into the term 'Retro.' Retro fashion allows rule shifts, such as 'old is suddenly new,' thus fashionable. The term "fashion" is frequently used in a positive sense, as a synonym for glamour, beauty and style. In this sense, fashions are a sort of communal art, through which a culture examines its notions of beauty and goodness. The term "fashion" is also sometimes used in a negative sense, as a synonym for fads and trends, and materialism.
There exist a number of cities recognized as global fashion centers or fashion capitals. Fashion Weeks are held in these cities where designers exhibit their new clothing collections to audiences. The main five cities are Tokyo, London, Paris, Milan and New York - these five are renowned for their major influence on global fashion and are headquarters to the greatest fashion companies. Other cities, including Los Angeles, Berlin, Rome, Hong Kong, Moscow, Madrid, Toronto, São Paulo, Melbourne, Osaka, Seoul, Daegu and Singapore also hold fashion weeks and are better recognized every year.

Fetching new data from eBay now... please stand byWho invented the sewing machine?
A sewing machine is a textile machine used to stitch fabric or other material together with thread. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies. Since the invention of the first working sewing machine, generally considered to have been the work of Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790,[http://www.ismacs.net/sewing_machine_history.html] ISMACS International - A brief history of the sewing machine the sewing machine has vastly improved the efficiency and productivity of fabric and clothing industries.
Though some older machines use a chain stitch, the basic stitch of a modern sewing machine consists of two threads and is known as lockstitch. Industrial machines are usually specialized for a specific task, and so different machines may produce a different type of stitch. Modern sewing machines are designed in such a way that the fabric easily glides in and out of the machine without the hassle of needles and thimbles and other such tools used in hand sewing, automating the process of stitching and saving time.
The fabric shifting mechanism may be a simple workguide or may be pattern-controlled (e.g., jacquard type). Some machines can create embroidery-type stitches. Some have a work holder frame. Some have a workfeeder that can move along a curved path, while others have a workfeeder with a work clamp. Needle guards, safety devices to prevent accidental needle-stick injuries, are often found on modern sewing machines.

The main stitch of most older sewing machines, chain stitch, has one major drawback ? it is very weak and the stitch can easily be pulled apart.[http://home.howstuffworks.com/sewing-machine1.htm] The Home Sewing Machine When the machines started being used, people realized a stitch more suited to machine production was needed, and it was found in the lock stitch. A lock stitch is created by two separate threads interlocking through the two layers of fabric, resulting in a sturdier stitch that looks the same from both sides of the fabric.

Sewing
Sewing or stitching or tailoring is the fastening of cloth, leather, furs, bark, or other flexible materials, using needle and thread. Its use is nearly universal among human populations and dates back to Paleolithic times (30,000 BCE). Sewing predates the weaving of cloth.
Sewing is used primarily to produce clothing and household furnishings such as curtains, bedclothes, upholstery, and table linens. It is also used for sails, bellows, skin boats, banners, and other items shaped out of flexible materials such as canvas and leather.
Most sewing in the industrial world is done by machines. Pieces of a garment are often first tacked together. The machine has a complex set of gears and arms that pierces thread through the layers of the cloth and semi-securely interlocks the thread.
Some people sew clothes for themselves and their families. More often home sewers sew to repair clothes, such as mending a torn seam or replacing a loose button. A person who sews for a living is known as a seamstress (from seams-mistress) or seamster (from seams-master), dressmaker, tailor, garment worker, or machinist.
"Plain" sewing is done for functional reasons: making or mending clothing or household linens. "Fancy" sewing is primarily decorative, including techniques such as shirring, smocking, embroidery, or quilting.
Sewing is the foundation for many needle arts and crafts, such as applique, canvas work, and patchwork.
While sewing is sometimes seen as a semi-skill job, flat sheets of fabric with holes and slits cut into the fabric can curve and fold in complex ways that require a high level of skill and experience to manipulate into a smooth, ripple-free design. Aligning and orienting patterns printed or woven into the fabric further complicates the design process. Once a clothing designer with these skills has created the initial product, the fabric can then be cut using templates and sewn by manual laborers or machines.

"I bought this book unseen and hoped for the best - quite often with purse books a lot of the styles end up being hokey and NOTHING I would ever want to carry or submit my friends to. I teach purse making classes (Amy Butler patterns) and wanted to check this out. Very nice, I would carry most of these purses and have made 2 fun little handbags out of this book. easy to follow, creative, simple and classic. The lines are clean and would translate well in many different kinds of fabric. For the most part they are fun 'going out' bags there arent a lot (if any) multi-pockets mom type purses. These are the styled out designs for ladies of the past who had hats that matched their bags. I don't have a matching hat, but my little bag in cotton Merimekko fabric sure does hip up my flip flops and sundress when I am out and about town...." -- N. Kerr-Mueller, Chicago

Bernina Sewing Machine
The Swiss Sewing Machine: In the spring of 1890, Karl Friedrich Gegauf moved from Tägerwilen to Steckborn, Switzerland. and in Feldbach Convent established an embroidery shop and a mechanical workshop for the production of a monogram embroidering machine, his own invention. In the embroidering section he had 4-6 machines in operation and up to 10 skilled mechanics were employed in the workshop. But Gegauf was less interested in the operation of the embroidery shop - that served more as a proving ground where his machines could be tried out: his main concern was the development of new machines of all different types.
He worked intensively on the problem of developing a machine for doing hemstitching, which at that time had to be done painstakingly by hand on countless items of laundry. He found an ingenious solution and in 1892 he was granted Swiss Patent No. 4670 for the world's first hemstitch sewing machine. This machine, and the one that he and his son improved later, were to be the main product of the Gegauf works for more than 30 years.
Bernina is Swiss company that manufactures sewing machines. The name comes from Piz Bernina, a mountain in the Swiss Alps.

VSM Group AB (Viking Sewing Machines), previously named Husqvarna Sewing Machines is a company based in Huskvarna, Sweden.

The VSM brand produces several lines of sewing machines, the top being the Designer series and the lowest being the mechanical (non-computerized) Huskystars. Great Idea for fun gifts
This was a great gift for my 20 year old daughter and 16 year old niece - snappy easy projects that really teach sewing skills. They made the Jean's skirt from their favorite jeans that were headed for the trash bin. My daughter said that it is a book that teaches you how to "EDIT YOUR CLOTHES". Fun to do and not a great cost for the projects. I had Singer Sewing books when I began to sew and I like the new, fresh, updated look. I hope there will be more in the series. -- Westchester Sewer
One-Piece Wearables: 25 Chic Garments and Accessories to Sew from Single Pattern Pieces (Domestic Arts for Crafty Girls)
15 Patterns Included!
Simple but elegant fashions requiring minimal sewing and cutting! Each modern and stylish piece is made using a single pattern piece, which is then snipped, trimmed, twisted, folded, and stitched. Each garment is accessible to even those with little sewing experience but also novel and appealing enough to attract experienced sewers. Projects provide readers with the inspiration and instruction to make customized, versatile wardrobe pieces that can be made in any range of fabrics and worn in combination or alone for a variety of style and fashion effects.
Each project featured in this book is made from a single pattern piece. Requiring minimal investment, simple sewing techniques, cutting, and creative yet simple folding, fashions can be made out of a range of fabrics providing limitless styles for each pattern. Many pieces can be worn multiple ways and in many different combinations with other pieces, ensuring endless style variations and to create an all-purpose wardrobe for all occasions.
The author, Sheila Brennan (New York, NY) is a designer who has worked in top companies in the fashion industry in New York, London and Paris for over ten years. She is both a talented designer and a skilled patternmaker who has always questioned traditional ways of looking at clothing construction. She is inspired by designers who are known for their innovative approach to fashion, such as Issey Miyake, Madeleine Vionnet, and Comme des Garcons.
The Elizabeth Zimmerman of Sewing
Great book of chic and easy projects that actually look great! The idea of a one piece pattern reminds me of Elizabeth Zimmerman's style of one piece knitting - all you need to do is sew the seams together to finish the garment. These projects are quick and easy and work well alone or with embellishments. Bottomline, this book is a base for creating an entire wardrobe, down to a purse! The book is spiral bound with an inside front cover pocket containing the patterns. Its made very sturdy and should take a beating on your sewing room/space table ( I have a preference for books built to withstand a fall from the height of an average sewing table). One wish for the author, in your next book, it would be great to see real life finished garment images instead of illustrated ones. Other than that, I love this book! -- Vanessa Johnson, New Jersey, NJ, USA

Can't say enough, wonderful, so glad I bought this
I just finished making a Mother of the Groom dress using the tulip skirt modified and Leena's basic fitting shell you download as an extra when you load the software. Other than moving the side dart in the bodice to a waist dart and contouring it a bit for a more fitted dart - I didn't have to any altering. The dress I was copying the skirt had two inverted pleats, but the same shape as the tulip skirt. So instead of three small pleats I combined them into an inverted pleat, again great fit. I just finished the dress on the front cover in a mauve fine Italian wool - WOW looks like a $300 dress. -- Amy Guzman
One Hour Dress -- 17 Easy-to-Sew Vintage Dress Designs From 1924 (Book 1)
Mary Brooks Picken, Director of Instruction at the the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences, developed the easy-to-use sewing instructions for her infamous "one hour dress." WIDAS was the largest school of dressmaking and design in the 1920s and produced a number of home study courses to teach sewing and millinery skills. There are three One Hour Dress books -- two from 1924, one from 1925. This book, the first book issued in 1924, contains step-by-step detailed instructions for completing the one hour dress and instructions for 16 other variations on the original design. Ten steps complete the dress: taking your measurements, divide the material, cut out the belt and skirt, cut out the blouse, bind the neck and sleeves, join the blouse and skirt, complete the skirt, complete the blouse, make the belt, and finish the dress. This method does not require a specific pattern, instead it is a "method of making." The author's 10-step method uses your own measurements for blouse length, skirt length, hip measurement and armhole measurement. These measurements are measured off on the fabric with clear instructions on where and when to cut. Fabric measurement suggestions are provided and detailed illustrations for each step are numbered in the text and have a corresponding number on the illustration so you can easily follow along. This 16 page book is easy-to-use to create fantastic flapper fashions. An infinite variety of dresses can be made based on the style you choose as well as fabrics, colors and decorative trims.

In sewing and fashion design, a pattern is an original garment from which other garments of a similar style are copied, or the paper or cardboard templates from which the parts of a garment are traced onto fabric before cutting out and assembling (sometimes called paper patterns).
Patternmaking, pattern making or pattern cutting is the art of designing patterns.
A custom-fitted basic pattern from which patterns for many different styles can be created is called a sloper or block.

Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing Pattern
* Skirt sewing pattern
* Sewing instructions
* One size fits all....for real!!
* Model Nr. 20017
This pattern makes a luxurious 1/4 circle flared skirt. Wear it on your hips. This skirt is the easiest skirt on the planet to make for any size. It comes with detailed instructions.
"I've been looking for an easy circle skirt pattern that I could use over and over, and this definitely fits the bill. It took me about two hours to make my first skirt, but I added a few embellishments that made the process a little more complicated. I believe that if one makes their skirt exactly as described in the directions, then it would probably take an hour or so at the most.
The only reason that I don't give this wonderful pattern a 5-star rating is that there are a few little things that could stand to be improved. First, the directions are simple, but littered with amateurish, hand-drawn illustrations. The quality of the illustrations isn't so great and it sort of annoyed me that I paid $12 for a pattern they didn't even bother to illustrate very well. Second, the instructions tell you to choose your skirt length (a very nice feature) but to add 5 inches to this number when actually cutting the material. I found that the additional 5 inches were unnecessary. These extra inches just add an additional step for later, when you would have to hem the bottom up considerably. In my opinion, it would be better to just decide your skirt length, then add only a few inches to allow for the waistband and your bottom hem. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about taking the skirt up later. Third, it's a bit annoying to find out that you have to measure out your skirt length each time you use the pattern. Instead of a more traditional pattern in which you cut against a tissue paper template, this pattern requires a little bit of leg work, though I think that's ok since you can choose multiple skirt lengths depending on your mood.
But those three very small concerns are outweighed by the utility and ease of this pattern. If you're like me and you like your A-line skirts to fall to just below your knees, you could also just measure out your ideal skirt on a piece of muslin, then cut that out and use it just like a tissue paper pattern to save yourself time in the future.
BTW, this pattern calls for using 60-inch wide fabric only, but if you can't find a fabric you really like in that measurement, then you can do what I did. I used the Sew Fast So Easy Pattern, but folded the paper almost in half (not quite in half since I had to take into account a seam allowance of 1/2 inch on each side). That way, you can use smaller width fabrics if you need to. This adds an extra seam to fuss with, but I think the added flexibility of possible materials is worth it." -- Betty, Indianapolis, IN United States
The Perfect Fit: The Classic Guide to Altering Patterns
Good fit improves the comfort and appearance of any garment and is the reason many people sew their own clothes. However, it's common to worry about ruining a pattern when you cut it apart to make a fitting adjustment. The Perfect Fit makes pattern alterations easy with proven methods illustrated step-by-step. This complete guide includes analyzing a figure, measuring the body, customizing the pattern, and fine-tuning the fit with small adjustments like moving buttons and reshaping darts. The Perfect Fit shows how to change a commercial pattern sized for millions of women into a sewing blueprint sized to fit your figure alone.
"This is the most comprehensive and clearly explanatory book on fitting and alteration I have ever seen.
The photos make it easy to see the problems and the drawings make it easy to see the solution. I highly recommend it." -- Susan M. Fredrick, Cloverdale, CA, USA

The Chain Stitch
Category: File - :Kazakh rug chain stitch embroidery.jpg|right|thumb|350px|Traditional embroidery in chain stitch on a Kazakh rug, contemporary.
Chain stitch is a sewing and embroidery technique in which a series of looped stitches form a chain-like pattern.Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework. The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. (March 1992). ISBN 0-89577-059-8, p. 32-33 Chain stitch is an ancient craft - examples of surviving Chinese chain stitch embroidery worked in silk thread have been dated to the Warring States period (5th-3rd century BC).Gillow, John, and Bryan Sentance: World Textiles, Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown, 1999, ISBN 0-8212-2621-5, p. 178 Handmade chain stitch embroidery does not require that the needle pass through more than one layer of fabric. For this reason the stitch is an effective surface embellishment near seams on finished fabric. Because chain stitches can form flowing, curved lines, they are used in many surface embroidery styles that mimic "drawing" in thread.Gillow and Sentance: World Textiles, p. 178
Chain stitches are also used in making tambour lace, needlelace, macramé and crochet.

The Blanket Stitch
__NOTOC__
The blanket stitch is a stitch used to reinforce the edge of thick materials. Depending on circumstances, it may also be called a whip stitch or a crochet stitch. It is defined as "A decorative stitch used to finish an unhemmed blanket. The stitch can be seen on both sides of the blanket."cite:Apparel Glossary of Terms|http://www.thepopshop.com/apparel-glossary.pdf
The Lock Stitch
The lockstitch uses two threads, an upper and a lower.
The upper thread runs from a spool kept on a spindle on top of or next to the machine, through a tension mechanism , a take-up arm , and finally through the hole in the needle.
The lower thread is wound onto a bobbin, which is inserted into a case in the lower section of the machine.
To make one stitch, the machine lowers the threaded needle through the cloth into the bobbin area, where a hook catches the upper thread at the point just after it goes through the needle.
The hook mechanism carries the upper thread entirely around the bobbin case, so that it has made one wrap of the bobbin thread. Then the take-up arm pulls the excess upper thread ( from the bobbin area ) back to the top forming the lockstitch ideally in the center of the thickness of the material , the tension mechanism prevents the thread from being pulled from the spool side, the needle is pulled out of the cloth, and the feed dogs pull the cloth back one stitch length, the cycle is repeated as the machine turns mechanically .
A lockstitch is the most common mechanical stitch made by a sewing machine.

The Cross Stitch
:This article is about the embroidery style called cross-stitch or counted cross-stitch. For specific crossed stitches used in needlework, see cross stitches.
Category: Image - :Stickmuster 1735.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Cross-stitch sampler, Germany, 1735.
Cross-stitch is a popular form of counted-thread embroidery in which X-shaped stitches are used to form a picture. Cross-stitch is usually executed on easily countable evenweave fabric called aida cloth. The stitcher counts the threads in each direction so that the stitches are of uniform size and appearance. This form of cross-stitch is also called counted cross-stitch in order to distinguish it from other forms of cross-stitch. Sometimes cross-stitch is done on designs printed on the fabric (stamped cross-stitch); the stitcher simply stitches over the printed pattern.
Knitting Stitches
This is a list of knitting stitches.
Over the long history of knitting across the world, hundreds of different knitting stitches have been created. This page contains the beginnings of a comprehensive catalogue of the types of stitches available to hand knitters and those learning how to knit.
An alphabetical list of these stitches can be found below, with photographs of each type of stitch and a link to instructions where this is available.
Crochet Stitches
Crochet () is a process of creating fabric from yarn or thread using a crochet hook. The word is derived from the French word "crochet", meaning hook. Crocheting, similar to knitting, consists of pulling loops of yarn through other loops. Crochet differs from knitting in that only one loop is active at one time (the sole exception being Tunisian crochet), and that a crochet hook is used instead of knitting needles.

The Garter Stitch
A few types of knitted fabric are so fundamental, that they have been adopted as part of the language of knitting, similar to techniques such as yarn over or decrease. Examples include stockinette stitch, reverse stockinette stitch, garter stitch, seed stitch, faggoting, and tricot.
In some cases, these fabrics appear differently on the right side (i.e., as seen when making the stitch) than on the wrong side (i.e., as seen from the other side, when the work is turned).
