The next installment

Smackdown vs. Raw is back again for the 2009 edition (released in November, 2008). Details are regularly released on what the game will do, what the roster will be, and what features to expect. On this lens I'll keep up with new announcements and tell you what to look forward to. After the game is released and I have time to play it, I'll give my review.

Some of the features for 2009 include an enhanced tag team experience, WWE written storyline modes for seven existing characters, and a revamped career mode for any wrestler. It also has the highly anticipated Create-A-Finisher.

Update Oct 31, 2008: Randy Orton, Mr. Kennedy, Edge and Jimmy Wang Yang added to roster.

More will come as they are announced.

New feature announced 10/10 - Roster Management

SvR 2009 will feature a Roster Editor, where you can switch any character in the game to another brand, change their classification, switch titles around, decide who fights clean or dirty and view stats and abilities. You can also use Team Management to create or break up tag teams, change tag team names or add other characters to the team.

This doesn't change things in storyline mode (that would be very hard) but does apply to any character in Exhibition, so since the roster is never current, you can now make it more current yourself. No fuss, no muss.

New feature announced 10/13: The Highlight Reel

IGN announced today that you'll know be able to create highlight reels. You can cut out your favorite match moments, edit them together and upload the file for anyone to see. You can save up to 20 and use created moves and wrestlers in them. If you run an efed off of SvR, now you can put up video clips in your descriptions. If done right it could be a really nifty feature for some.

Here's the rundown: Article on Highlight Reel

Some upcoming features I can't wait for

Like many wrestling fans that appreciate moves, I often come up with a few of my own, much to the chagrin of various pillows and filled Army duffel bags. While the Smackdown vs. Raw franchise has added in quite a list of moves and holds over the years, there's always something missing.

This year, a new feature for Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 is the Create-A-Finisher. Finally. I watched the video preview on IGN and would buy this game for this feature alone. Steven St. Clair will finally truly be able to hit his Centerfold Slam. You can tie together a series of holds, moves, slams and taunts to get your finisher picture perfect. I'm looking forward to this more than anything else. You can even pick a pre-written name for your move that the announcers will call, or type in one of your own. Sweet.

As a longtime die hard lover of all things tag team, I've always been disappointed with the way tag teams worked in video games. TNA Impact especially was pretty abysmal. Why create The Hart Foundation or the British Bulldogs if they don't work together a little better? Being able to choose double team moves in recent years helped, but this year the tag team match is supposed to have a whole new life. We'll have to wait and see if it really does, but if it is what they say it is, I'm really psyched.

Some upcoming features I'm ambivalent about

I wasn't a big fan of the 24/7 mode in SvR 2008. It was all right, and I played through it once, and was better than some of the storyline modes of recent years. I just wasn't all that thrilled with it.

This year there are two storyline modes: Road to Wrestlemania, where you control one of seven superstars through stories written by WWE; and a career mode for any wrestler including CAWs.

With storyline modes it's always a wait and see thing. I actually like the idea of having one storyline mode for any wrestler, and seven more that are character-specific. It has potential for mixing it up a little more. Otherwise, I don't have much of an opinion, because I personally choose never to get warmed up about storyline modes until I actually experience them.

Available platforms

Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 will be available for PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP. Obviously a few of these versions will be different from the others.

I prefer the Xbox personally but it's always nice when a title comes out for so many machines.

Other SvR resources

IGN.com has news on the game very regularly. My only problem is that the site takes quite a while to load on my satellite internet, and isn't always fast on my cable access. Regardless, it's a great place for hands-on reviews and feature updates. Here are their pages:

Caws.ws - A good listing of CAWs for past systems, and I'm sure they'll have a load for 09 soon. Some are great, some are terrible, but you'll most likely find a few you like enough to use.

Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 will be....
