How to Grow a Salad in a Barrel

I know that it is hard to give up your garden when you have to move to an apartment. But I'm here to show you that you don't have to. You can even have a garden if you are too stiff and sore to kneel in the dirt. You can plant a salad in half a wine barrel. You don't need a container at all and you can move it. You can have strawberries all summer, and I can show you how to start the plants for next year too. don't give up on a garden just because you live in an apartment, a patio or a balcony is all you need.

An overview

We will learn how to raise strawberries in a small space. We will see that you can garden standing up or sitting down. You can amaze your friends with a salad garden planted in a half of a whiskey barrel. At your next summer party.surprise your friends ans family with a square watermelon from your own watermelon patch ( in Japan these sell for $50 a peace).

Materials you'll need

For a salad bowl you need half a whiskey barrel. You can get most of these at Walmart or your nearest greenhouse. Hand garden tools and soft gloves. To build a raised bed you will need the plans and some lumber. These are easy to build and a pleasure to use.. To build a salad bowl you need plants, 1 tomato, 1 bell pepper, 1 hot pepper,(if you like them). You need a six pack each of lettuce, spinach, and parsley.

Step 1:

We are going to start with a salad bowl. When you buy the whiskey barrel, buy some river rock, and a 3 foot 1/2" dowel. The dowels will be in the craft department. Put about two inches of rock in the bottom of the barrel, this is drainage. Next fill the barrel with soil. Let this set for about 2 hours and then on one side of the barrel push the dowel in all the way to the bottom.

Step 2:

Now you want to plant the tomato next to the dowel and tie it softly with a soft rag. You can cut a strip from a wore out t-shirt or an old nylon stocking. As the tomato grows tie it to the dowel, that keeps the tomatoes off the ground. On one side plant the bell pepper and on the other side plant the hot pepper. In front of these plant the spinach, then the lettuce. In front of that plant the parsley. If you have a large barrel you like sprinkle some radish seed. .

Step 3:

Now all you have to do is wait for you garden to come up and enjoy your salad.Invite your friends and family ove and tell them you grew the salad. You may have to show them the garden.
When you harvest the spinach and lettuce, cut the leaves you want. Don't pull them. If you cut them, they will grow back, if you don't cutt all of them. You also need to cut the parsley.
