How A Small LED Light Indicates Surge Protection

Ranked #9,224 in Computers & Electronics, #194,875 overall

LEDs are found in use in an assortment of areas today, such as in cell phones to provide back lighting, vehicle turn signals, brake lights and flashlights. And now a new use has been found for the small LED light, in a surge protector. This usage of LEDs is such an array of small electronic appliances is readily apparent since the diodes are so small that they use very little energy when converting electricity into light. Regular light bulbs waste quite a bit of electricity in the form of heat energy. Small LED bulbs are more environmentally friendly as well since they are not made with either mercury or lead. No doubt the largest advantage is their lifespan, which is approximately ten times that of halogen lamps and about fifty times longer than the incandescent bulb.

The Small LED Light Is A Growing Technology

For a long while LEDs were not used for lighting rooms as they simply did not produce an effective amount of light. Today several companies are involved in the enhancement of the LED technology such that their output may be more competitive domestically, including usage in computer lights and desktop lamps.

Small LED Light As Indicator In A Surge Protector

However, the most beneficial advancement of late is that small LED bulbs are now utilized as indicator lights in the device that protects equipment from power surges, the surge protector. Surges, otherwise called voltage spikes or transient surges, are abrupt increases in household voltage what happen when high-energy appliances or computers are powered on. Such surges can take place in excess of 2,000 times per year in homes, slowly destroying the components of a home computer, a cell phone, and other fragile electronic equipment. Other home appliances, furnaces, air conditioners, washers, dryers, and the like, are also know to create surges which travel back through the main breaker panel and out again through the home wiring.

More Surge Protectors Use LED Technology

This is the reason, while few people are cognizant of it, that surge protection is important. For quite a while there was an issue of being able to tell if the surge protector was working correctly or even at all. Many firms have begun incorporating small LED bulbs to measure the functionality of most home surge protectors. The devices will have two lights, one of which is the green LED bulb which indicates that your equipment is operating through a properly grounded outlet. If the light is off your outlet is not appropriately grounded and your surge protector in the manner that it should.

How LED Light Bullbs Are Used In Surge Protection

The second of the two lights is the red LED. The red LED shows that your equipment is being satisfactorily protected by your device. Should it be off, then the surge protector is damaged and your equipment is vulnerable to a surge. This is not unusual since every time your power surge protector absorbs a surge, its condition deteriorates. After a certain number of surges, it will be spent and will require replacement. It may seem expensive to replace one, but it will much less costly than having to replace the equipment which may sustain damage due to an unpredictable electrical surge.
