Review of the Kerhsaw Scallion 1620 High-Carbon Knife Blade

The Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion is a small folding knife with a cool assisted opening system. Despite of being a little larger than the Chive, the Kershaw Scallion is a perfect small knife to carry in your pocket for everyday tasks. Especially, if you have big hands and the Chive is too small for you. The knife opens smoothly and fast using only one hand and locks open with a satisfying click. It is easy to close and the blade keeps closed into the handle thanks to the Speedsafe mechanism. For further safety all the Scallions feature a tip lock to prevent that the knife might open accidentally in your pocket. The high carbon knife blade is easy to sharpen and even though it doesn't hold on edge for very long, it's quite durable. Overall, I like Ken Onion designs and I would recommend this knife to anyone searching for a small easy to carry folding knife with an assisted opening system.

Features and Specifications:

Blade material 420HC stainless steel: this high carbon knife blade is not a high-end steel but tough enough for what the knife is designed for: ordinary light everyday duty. So, it is not a knife for prying, but of course, no knife of this size is designed to be used for this! The knife is easy to sharpen and retains the edge for a relatively long time. Besides, the steel is quite resistant to rust.

Speedsafe: The assisted opening mechanism helps you to open the knife with a manual push on the blade thumb stud or Index open system. The Speedsafe opens the knife smoothly and fast. It is addictive, one of the selling points of the knife. The mechanism has a torsion bar that helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by "gravity." That's why it is called Speedsafe.

Thumb stud: The knob in the blade to manually open the knife. It is small and hard to use. I prefer the Index open system to opens the knife.

Locking Liner: for locking the blade into position once the blade is deployed. A welcome safety measure.

Pocket clip: In these models the pocket clip is removable, but not reversible.

Tip Lock: to further safety the scallion knives come with this tip lock to prevent that the blade might open accidentally in your pocket. It doesn't seem to be strong enough and could break if it is abused.
