How to Find a Small Business Coach (rather than a business coaching school)
Ever do a Google search for "business coach" when trying to find a business coach to hire? Here's probably what you got - a bunch of links to schools that teach you how to become a business coach (and for a small fee of $30,000 you can get a real live certificate that says that you're a real live person trained by them in their one method of business coaching).
Why does that matter? Well, you should understand that those business coaching schools are really about creating a pyramid of business coaches - where the newly trained business coaches get paid more money for the newbies who sign up for the business coach training, than for the people they coach. And of course, then the business coaches get a percentage of the client revenue and the educational-training revenue of the business coaches under them.
An individual business coach is about helping you achieve your business goals, not about treating you as a side-venture to the real money maker of signing up future coaches.
An individual business coach works with you from a broad range of methods of approaches - finding the one that's best for you.
An individual business coach loves coaching you to help you achieve your seemly-yet-unattainable desires.

Ever Attend one of those "How to Improve your business marketing, systems, etc." Seminars?
Still have the great stuff piled next to your desk? You know it's great information. You know it could help you build your business, achieve your business goals, create your ideal business picture.
You're read it, scanned it, thought about it.
Maybe you've even mentioned to your employees, friends, or family members that you're excited about trying some of these new ideas.
But, it really hasn't moved from information to action in your business world.
What to do?
That's were individual, one-to-one, unique business coaching comes into play.
You have the great business improvement info. You have a great business product or service. You have great motivation.
Now, all you need is a little help (a.k.a. a business coach) APPLYING that business seminar material to your unique, specific business and personal circumstances.
Seminars are about information.
Business coaching is about applying that information to your own real live business.
My current Recommended Reading for Business People
I read James Loehr's original book, "Toughness Training for Life," and loved it. It was about how stress - really, appropriate levels of challenge - can help, while inappropriate levels of challenge - alot or a little - can hurt us.
But, his newer book, "Stress for Success" is even better. Why? Because he spends alot more of the book conveying to you the "how to do it in your life," rather than just describing the theory and giving examples of where he saw good and bad stress play out (he was a tennis coach to the big leaguers).
Stress for Success
Loehr's theory - and now, it's simply described application - is very important to understand, and to apply it to our lives!

E-Myth Revisited
for most small business owners
Why do I use other resources? Because I don't like cookie-cutter 1-size-fits-all "solutions," because they're really not solutions at all - because it can't be applied to your individual circumstances.
I'm just not a cookie-cutter kind of guy. I like creating and orchestrating unique solutions tailored to fit a business coaching client's specific visions and goals, one-of-a-kind style, personality traits, & particular challenges. And that's the kind of guy my business coaching clients are looking for.
So, if you're a small business owner and have been recommended to the E-Myth, go ahead get it and read it. It's informative and will help you understand one perspective on one particular small business problem. But don't believe the "myth" that it's the "only way the cookie crumbles!"

Do you live outside the NY/NJ/PA area?
- Yes.
- YES!

What makes a good Business Coach?
(in my opinion)
Business Coaches come from 2 schools:1. Business
2. Psychology
Guess what my background is? Yep. Both
Why is that good for you? Let us count the ways . . .
1. I understand how business works.
2. I understand that business is about the money - and about your happiness - all at the same time.
3. I understand that if you're losing 2 cents on each pencil you sell, then selling thousands more of them will still keep you in the red.
4. I understand that business owners and entrepreneurs are usually passionate, creative, energized people, who sometimes have issues that prevent them from getting to the next level.
5. I understand that business owners and entrepreneurs get frustrated when the managing, marketing or minutia of the business takes them too far away from their passion or creativity.
6. I understand that business owners desperately want to find a way for their brilliance, their talents, and their experience to translate into lots of income.
7. I understand that business owners love thinking about their business, but hate it when they have no life.
8. I understand that any personal, emotional or business challenge that a business person faces can be overcome - but sometimes it requires the help of an outside person who's not connected to the emotionally-charged issue - to give some new insight, shed some new light, create a new solution, or give some needed support.
9. I understand that business people have a difficult time delegating - even when they think they're good at it, and they need some outside person to either give them permission to do it, help them let go, find out why they resist it, make a creative solution, or develop a new business model that
addesses the issue.
10. I understand that business owners usually view marketing and networking as their least-favorite business task - and need help, guidance, creative ideas, and support, that really work for them as individuals, to help their business accomplish these tasks.
11. I understand that business people usually have families . . . and a life . . . and are juggling alot - always. I understand that there really is no such thing as keeping your life and your business separate - and how that plays out (and its challenges) at both ends.
