When working to protect your chickens as well as the investment it is extremely important to build a chicken pen, which is considered not only safe but also secure. The first thing to determine is if a simple pen made from wires and posts will suffice or if a more secure feature such as a tall fence is required to keep the chickens from escaping.

The location of the pen is important, as it must be safe from predators. Construction should be in a way to prevent any type of predators from gaining access to your poultry. Incorporating a feature such as a padlock is ideal to help prevent access.

The least expensive and simplest design is the post and wire pen. There are only a few required supplies for this type of pen. You will need an industrial stapler and staples, hammer, wire cutters, crowbar, and sledgehammer, posts that can be bought in a bundle, wire and staples. Any home improvement or construction supply store can be of assistance with these supplies.

Digging holes for the posts will be much easier with the crowbar. Once placement of the posts is decided the sledgehammer can be used to set the posts in the soil. The depth needed will be determined by the size of the posts and the height needed of the pen. Test the first post you set for sturdiness and stability while withstanding a little force. Once all the posts are set, the wire needs to be cut to size and fastened to the posts with the stapler and staples. Once complete you will need to check for any loose staples, if any are found you will need the hammer to tap them in.
