Bhutan, A Small But Happy Country

Bhutan [1] is a small country in the Himalayas between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and India.

Besides the stunning natural scenery, the enduring image of the country for most visitors is the strong sense of culture and tradition that binds the kingdom and clearly distinguishes it from its larger neighbors. Bhutan is the only Vajrayana Buddhist nation in the world, and the profound teachings of this tradition remain well preserved and exert a strong influence in all aspects of life. Due to its pristine environment and harmonious society, the tiny Kingdom of Bhutan has been called "The Last Shangrila."

Certainly Bhutan Could Use A Bigger Population

According to Professor Anil Dogra, Bhutan would be better off with more people.

"17 August, 2009 - Sandwiched between the two most populated countries in the world, China and India, Bhutan's population growth rate at 1.8 percent is low, according to a professor at Sherubtse college in Kanglung.

Professor Anil Dogra, an economic lecturer at the country's premier institute of learning, says that Bhutan has an economic growth rate of more than 8.2 percent with potential from the large hydroelectric projects to push it higher. "The population growth rate won't meet economic demands," he said."

- Helen Keller-

Did you ever see an unhappy horse? Did you ever see bird that had the blues? One reason why birds and horses are not unhappy is because they are not trying to impress other birds and horses.

others whenever they go.

Premium-paying tourists have long eulogised Bhutan's unspoiled charms, its peace and its pristine environment, but the Himalayan kingdom, famed as the "last Shangri-La", and for using happiness to measure its success, is no idyll.
Bhutan counts the cost of trying to buy happiness

I had a chance once to go to Bhutan on a Canadian project but because we were in another country then, getting a visa will be difficult and so we sent a friend in Bangladesh who did not need a visa. One day, I still want to visit. The number of visitors is limited each year.

Bhutan is a beautiful country. My city is pretty great but I would much rather live in the country. Unfortunately it seems that for the current time it seems my destiny to live in the city. Best wishes.

I've read about Bhutan a few times. There they define progress according to the Gross National Happiness instead of Gross Domestic Product. For visiting it's a bit complicated though. Many restrictions are imposed on visitors, the most inconvenient being that you cannot travel independently but must go through a travel agent. Rafick
