Small house plans - because small can be beautiful and very efficient

This lens is dedicated to small house plans and cottage house plans. Of course, small is relative. One standard I found is that any home with less than 2,000 square feet can be considered small. However, I once owned a home with less than 1,000 square feet and shared it with two teenagers.

I feel that small can be beautiful. In this lens, I will have information about where you can find small house plans, including small cabins, garage apartments and craftsman-style houses.

Small houses have become very popular and for good reason. A small house is less expenive to maintain, cheaper to heat and cool, and easier to clean up If you're a baby boomer, you should definitely be thinking about a small house plan because, after the kids have grown and flown, a small home allows you to downsize a bit and take life easier. Small houses also make great starter homes for young couples and young families because of the lower cost.

Where to find small house plans

There are a number of web sites that sell house plans, including small house plans. Two that I like are Don Gardner Co. (www.dongardner.com) and www.coolhouseplans.com.

As an example of costs, you can get plans for a 1,251 aq.ft. house from coolhouseplans that range in price from $585 for five sets of blueprints up to $1,175 for CAD files. And Don Gardner has plans for a very attractive 1,228 sq.ft. house at $625 for five sets of blueprints up to $1,720 for AutoCAD construction on CD-ROM.

A great book on small houses

This book contains some great information on small houses. It has good illustrations and text that serve as terrific idea starters.

o far as actually building that small house is concerned, I recently found a book that tells you how to build your house free.
