Small Wind Turbine for Home Wind Power

A Small Wind Turbine is an environmentally-friendly way to harness the free power of the wind to generate electricity for your home. No matter how much energy you try to save by buying low energy equipment, the only way to make real cuts in your energy bill is to make your own power - and even sell it back to the power company!

Why Build a Small Wind Turbine?

What are the Benefits of a Small Wind Turbine?

A Small Wind Turbine offers a green solution to help keep domestic costs down. Among the reasons for installing a small wind turbine are:

To harness a plentiful free renewable energy source.
To reduce your carbon footprint as wind electricity power is green, renewable and doesn't release pollutants.
To cut your electricity bills and store electricity for a calm day:
To earn money for the excess electricity you produce.

Small Wind Turbines - How Do They Work?

What Parts Are Needed for a Small Wind Turbine?

A wind generator's rotating blades convert the wind's kinetic energy into momentum via a rotating shaft . This turns an alternator, which makes electricity. This electricity is then transmitted through wiring down the tower to the home circuits.

The blades follow the wind, so a yaw bearing allows the wind turbine to track the wind as it changes direction, as directed by the tail. A governer limits the rotor rpm and generator output to protect the turbine from excessive winds.

Installing a Small Wind Turbine

What you need to consider before Building a Small Wind Turbine

Wind Turbines must have access to a good source of wind to perform correctly. Turbulence is at its highest close to the ground and diminishes with height, whereas wind speed increases with height. This is why you should install a wind turbine at least 30 ft above any obstacles within 300 ft.

Most Small Wind Turbines sold today need to operate in wind speeds of around 8-10 miles per hour, so check the wind speed in your area reaches this speed most of the time. Consider the surroundings for obstructions. A Small Wind Turbine should be placed in an area that is free from obstacles which cause turbulence. Check local zoning laws before installing the turbine. Many areas have set laws which govern the installation of towers based on tower height and how far away they should be from neighboring property.

Small Wind Turbines - Are they a Fad?

Will Small Wind Turbines Prevail?

120 years ago, few people thought cars were much use. They scared the horses and choked the neighbors. Roads were full of holes and there was no breakdown service; if your car needed fixing, you fixed it yourself. Fuel came in cans from pharmacies. Today, there are few horses on the streets but fossil fuels in their turn are increasingly expensive and damaging to the environment. It may take a while to develop a better fuel for cars but Wind Power is increasing in popularity as a solution to generating personal power requirements and may reduce the need to build more power plants. Perhaps in the future we will all generate power off the grid.

I live in a very rural area and have built a diy wind turbine in my backyard. It's not overly big, but it generates enough power to cut my electric bills in half. Definitely worth it and I have already seen a return on the investment. If you can do it and have the room, go for it.

great lens, I don't own a wind turbine but in the, hopefully not too distant future, it will be on the cards.
